Windows 8 who's buying/upgrading

No but they haven't added any - so here we are with basically the same OS for those kinds of people as we had three years ago.

How does learning Metro benefit me as a gamer/power user? What does it offer me over Windows 7 to make me switch?

Please don't say boot times. I already boot into Windows in a matter of seconds.

Let me turn that around what does Win7 offer the gamer over Vista?...ie nothing both have DX11 and FPS is the same, its all relative.

I will say Win8 offers longer gaming time then Win7 for battery/portable users due to no Aero.

None of them are good enough reasons for someone in the groups I listed to upgrade. I mean Windows 7 is already brilliantly stable - I don't think I have *ever* had to use Task Manager or Recovery.

And as I said above, the performance boosts to booting and performance are negligible.

Have you used Vista? Sure, after SP1 it was a decent OS but Windows 7 gave considerable performance and stability improvements over a range of applications. Windows 8 has the same problem that Vista had - it's following an OS that's already in a sweet place in terms of performance and stability.

Andif you want laptop battery life get a MacBook. ;)

They are reasons for people in that group to upgrade. I can't stand how long it takes for my w7 pc to boot up, so much so I've turned it on about twice in the last few months. It's not being replaced next week.

And they certainly are not and can not be considered a slap in the face. Which is the point I was addressing, not if you need to upgrade.

And no they are not negotiable at all. Especially from a clean install. For some reason upgrade doesn't seem to lower boot times as much.

is windows 8 no good for a gaming rig was looking to put it on my new build.

Win8 is fine for gaming I've installed quite a huge list of working games from BG,BG2,KOTOR,KOTOR2,Icewind Dale and even Unreal Tournament to modern games like Skyrim,XCOM,Dishonored,Tera to name a few.

Too bad it won't play my Windows games ;) ,my point is Win8 is handy (longer gaming time)for portable Windows gaming.

As for stability well I have quite a few Windows OS stable ie even Vista,Win7,Win8 so nothing new there,I could throw in my stable Linux Distro's as well,in a way Win7 was my biggest diappointment, you know why?...because it offered nothing really new over Vista apart from speed,at least with Win8 Microsoft have changed the almost 20 years old UI to something different and actually added more new features then Win7 ever had over Vista, as for Metro well it may not be perfect but something they can improve on in Win9 etc...

I still refer you to my previous point - that the performance differences are negligible and not worth the trade-off.

They aren't negliable though. Why have I stopped using one pc, due to boot times. if its negligible.

And please explain why it's a slap in the face, as you have yet.

You simply don't like metro, that really is all it boils down too and due to that you're coming out with such silly statements like their are no new features.

My rig takes 6 seconds from button press to Windows login screen. Are you going to tell me that if I take time to learn Metro, and spend money on a new OS, that you'll get it down to 5.5s?

Well whoopee-do, sign me up!

You don't even need to learn metro. Not all computers boot that fast, in fact you must have one hell of a pc. Even then how long till usable screen? W8 is pretty much instant after login. W7 can be some time before its usable after login, so at least use the correct timings.

Even ignoring boot there are other features that are very much in the power user realms.

Not needing to upgrade, is again very different to your initial "it's a slap in the face to power users and gamers"

And your "no new features" statement which is just a lie.

You have to dream about Microsoft tailoring an OS to desktop now? :p

MS went through a lot of trouble GPU accelerating Windows to make it a better experience and now they've undone it all purely to suit battery powered phones/tablets.

You can cry rivers, won't change the fact that the market has spoken and low power devices are what's in demand.

MS has never had a os that suits all mass selling devices and it's hurt them.

They do now, and it's going nowhere.

It is a slap in the face to power users and gamers, i'm standing by that comment 100% as it's true.

Maybe I just need a touch screen/tablet/phone to "get it".

Cold boot to login screen in 1.5-2s? Now who's lying? 99% of BIOSes won't even clear POST in that time.

How is it true? You haven't given one point, that isn't a lie.

Also can we have your time for usable desktop. Not a pointless time to login screen.

I have given plenty of points but you're taking your usual stance of ignoring anything that doesn't support your stance. If you really don't have Microsoft shares, why do you care so much about Windows 8? I don't get it - I don't like Windows 8 and I don't use it but at least I understand the target market. You seem to think that it's better in every way, which just isn't true.

Well because otherwise it depends on how quickly I can type?

I do have a Fast Boot setting but it disables keyboard during boot so I have it turned off in case I need to get into settings. But I have a "Fast VGA" option which tunes it down a good couple of seconds.

What boot times were you getting with Fast Boot in Windows 7 then?
