*** The Official Google Nexus 7 Thread ***

Has anyone else got a Nexus 7 with a serial number starting with a "D"?

My previous Nexus 7 started "CBOK" and I've seen all sorts of serials starting with a C and previously B's and A's but I've never come across a serial starting with a D.

The Nexus 7 is a great piece of kit but let down by build quality. Its generally the same common faults i.e. screen lift, screen bleed, bezel damage, blown speakers etc. Mine was perfect, used it extremely carefully but randomly the screen broke as mentioned in my post above. I hate to think how many devices have been returned / replaced due to faults.

This is disappointing to hear especially from ASUS who I held in high esteem. More worrying is when the device breaks out of warranty, say a day after expiry, 1 year and 1 day use for a £200 device would be extremely poor! I wanted to buy this from a shop that gave 2 year warranty but unfortunately was out of stock.

Slightly worried by the amount of failures on this device i'm reading.... is the quality that poor?

Yes and no, seems to be a bit of luck involved.

I'm on my second device now and have had this for 7 weeks or so without problem. First one had obvious screen lift and they exchanged it without problem.

Regardless of the problems you hear, I'd recommend them based on price and the ease I had in arranging an exchange with Google customer services.

You're always going to hear the bad news about any product, purely based on the anger of an unhappy customer. I doubt the majority of happy customers went straight to the internet to post about their good tablet.

For the price I think its daft not to take a chance, knowing how easy it is to send them back.

I have a Vodafone data only SIM in mine at £4.99 per month for 500MB which is more than enough for me!

WhatsApp works fine on it too! :)

Really getting close to getting one of these.
Can someone clarify the best option for unlocking the bootloader and rooting the device?
There seem to be a few variations and some look fiarly long winded/complicated!

I assume though I can use things like custom launchers out of the box?

Hi guys,

Loving my Nexus 7 but I've hit a bit of a n00b brick wall...
I assumed I would be able to copy my mp3 and mp4 files to the relevant folder on the device via USB. When I do this the Nexus doesn't recognize the file format, despite it being correct?

Use a media player like BSPlayer, if it's the warning in windows when you copy them then just ignore it.

Are you getting a warning message when transferring the files, or will they just not open after they have been transferred? If it's the former then just ignore it and copy across - it should work.

Who's using what for Data plan sims, for the 3G model ?

I think the best I've seen is Giffgaff for £7.50 1GB per month.

I've gone with Samba Mobile, watch adverts (well not watch but tap the screen and go do something else..) and don't have to pay anything.

I'm not a heavy data user, about 150-200mb/month and this seems to keep me covered, in fact I've only been on it about 4 weeks and I've built up a 400mb cushion :D No fees other than buying the mini-SIM to start with (£2.50 if you get a referral).

Got my 16gb Nexus 7 over the weekend. Flashed it with Smoothrom, so far, so good. Anything else i should do or missing out on while its unlocked?

Got if working well with my Synology NAS streaming music over the net. Struggling with video at this stage but hoping that will change when I get 80/20 fibre installed on the 22nd.
