***** Official Football Manager 13 Thread *****

ive just updated to the latest patch, was playing release until now, hopefully it will put an end to silly long shots and always booting it out for a goal kick at the start.

My patch has just been installed too. I haven't seen any 'stupid' shots yet but it is early days.

I'm really struggling with my defensive line here. Any advice? I've set attacking formation using a fluid/very fluid philosophy and a quick tempo (trained up for it) and I am scoring but I'm also conceding way too many for my liking. My defenders are supposedly good (worth over £35 million between them) but they are acting like non leaguers :p

I'll have to follow Simisker's advice I think. Perhaps change the philosophy to a rigid style of play and see what happens.

Edit: And what gives with all the bleeding Internationals!! I've got a 25 man senior squad but 13 of them at any one time will bugger off to play for their country! Arrghhh!
What's worse is when they get injured for months on end as a result of their trip AND still insist on playing internationally!

Only play rigid if you are using a defensive system against a team that is much better than you.
The players dont get dragged all over the place then.
I would suggest that you might be playing too high a defensive line, set the slider just to the point where it changes from normal to deep and set play offside to no.

Attacking.
Fluid system.
Press opponants.
Default tackling.
Drill crosses.
Tempo slider about 2 3rds up.

Oh the woes of lower league management. Nearly all my contracts are up at the end of the year and everyone seems to want double the wage they are on now :(

Happened to me loads, if they aren't on pro terms you can just not renew them and the hang about on non contract terms on the old money (bit of a strange cheat), everyone who thinks they can get better money choose to leave or get better ones with other clubs

Going to stick it out at Harrogate, but I'm expecting the sack before the end of the season! There are already 'rumours' in the media :(

If someone could analyse those tactics though, would be swell :D
Hope these haven't arrived too late, then :p

That's my massive reckon, anyway - I'm not putting myself as some sort of godlike FM guru; it's just what I would do, based on successes I've had and a shedload of playing time [2200 hours on FM2010/12, according to Steam ] I'd also get under the bonnet with individual player tweaks, but I've seen you're playing FMC, so don't know whether that gives you all the fine-tuning that the full-fat game does.

I've not looked at your 451 yet, but I will if I have time.

Thanks, that's awesome feedback. Picks up on some points I hadn't though of and really helps to visualise it :)

Would you recommend staying rigid or trying fluid?

Edit: I'm trying a season on both FMC and FM 'full fat' to see the differences, so far I can't see any differences in tactics, so I can make individual changes to players in exactly the same way. I don't change individual instructions much, I was just changing players' roles.

TBH, the only thing I miss in FMC is individual training.

This is what i have done, and feel exactly the same, the individual training is the only thing i feel is missing from the classic mode, i prefer to train my hot prospects up the way i feel they should, not just what the end up training

Thanks Simisker for further godlike advice. I will give it a try in the SPL. I did okay with my 4-4-2 (finished 5th) - not bad for a team with absolutely no money who started off in the second division.

One major issue I have is fighting the board! I've never seen this before but they accepted a bid on my BEST player without asking me! They said I could protest the sale but it made no difference. So they ended up selling my best striker, and best player (that Noel dude) for £600k. I paid £35k so it was a good deal financially but it killed my performance as I predicted. I was £3 million in debt at the time, so word of warning. If you are struggling financially be prepared to take some hits! He was knocking the goals in every game and all of a sudden I found myself getting smashed by the teams at the bottom of the league. I was in 3rd place when this happened. I also lost my second best striker to serious injury and had to field a 4-5-1 towards the end of the season, using a midfielder as a striker :D It was pretty chaotic. I've still not recovered now, towards the beginning of the new season - I have one striker whom is a second division player and no money to strengthen the squad. So I am in serious trouble. Unfortunately the board doesn't seem to appreciate any of these problems :-(

I had this too! You can talk to the player and request they lower their wage demands. It works if you have the option to do so.

lol that's mental. I must admit, I grabbed a really really good free a while back in my Bournemouth save and he's now worth over £5 million. But I do trawl the free transfer lists a bit and most of them are useless old men or injury prone youngsters.

useless old men
They're not useless, you heartless ageist :p

They can have really great mental attributes and attitudes ["Model Professional", "Resolute" etc] that can be passed on to the young whippersnappers through mentoring. A team with old heads on young shoulders is your ultimate aim, and if you don't want to put yourself in the lap of the FM gods by playing Regen Roulette, this is the easiest, quickest, most nailed-on way of doing it.

You should be *constantly* mentoring - assuming you're at a club you want to stay with for a few years, of course!

injury prone youngsters.
See, THESE are the useless ones :D

I didn't know mentoring people is how you got the ultimate personalities in your team!!
It's not only personality/mental improvements - mentoring [when it works] is also a great way of building up a "web" of Favoured Teammates amongst squad members. A team of eleven players who expressly like each other [which is accelerated by mentoring] play better week in, week out than a team who haven't built up those relationships.

If you've ever wondered why the 'B' team of fringe players and youngsters that you fielded inexplicably loses to minnows in the Cup despite having a huge attribute advantage, this is why - they're less likely to have built up this relationship web, so don't play as well as your established 'A' team. The minnows, on the other hand, will have fielded *their* established 'A' team, which has a stronger relationship web.

Ahhh, yeah I knew about the favoured personal thing, had an obsession in FM 12 of getting everyone together at a youth level (costing me so much) and trying to win the u18 league and cup every year...

Got hopeful the personality thing could be like breeding in pokemon where you could almost teach people to be a leader. Sounds like a good way to improve players mental attributes quickly though.
