Windows 8 who's buying/upgrading

Metro Start Below,

Can I just ask - are companies going to bother with doing proper Metro tiles? I mean that just looks awful because it's old icons stuck in the middle of the tiles - it would look a lot better IMO if there were proper tiles for games and apps.

Hopefully in Win9 we will see improvements in Metro tiles etc...however its not that bad IMHO but can be improved for sure.

I would like to see different Metro tile shapes and able to change colours on individual tiles ,that way I could colour code important ones etc...

Ok I'll answer I share the PC with the wife who is at home so using it much more than me. She hates when I change stuff as I usually lose all her favs, e-mails and automatic site logins for which she's long forgotten the password.

I bought 8 about 3 months ago now and went to install it but thought to ask the missus first.

She browses the net, facebooks orders online and does some office tasks on it. She also teleworks via remote VPN.

She want's to know what doesn't work with WIN 7 and what the benefits will be to her with WIN 8.

Can someone help me with this as the MS site doesn't really go through the pros-cons for the average user or do a good comparison.

Like I said I've already bought it so it's not a troll question.

My Mrs is a PC tard, so when I upgraded my laptop I made sure that her needed shortcuts were on Start and desktop and I haven't had a single question from her. I updated my office doing the same for my staff and I have had no issues either... All my keyboards have sleep / shutdown buttons so that's what everyone uses.

I find the less knowledgeable PC users use Start a lot more than say I would.

After a couple of months of Win 8 I have just re-installed Windows 7. Tbh I was liking 8 and had got used to the interface and other tablet orientated stuff. Going back to 7 is like putting on an old comfy pair of slippers. It is so much nicer to use than 8 and is simple yet effective.

8 was ok but when you go back and start using 7 again it just all feels so right.

i think this is my problem, i am so used to windows 7 that i know for sure that i will not like win 8 hence the reason i have not even tried it yet.

If you install classic shell, win8 boots into desktop mode - I hardly ever use metro unsless I want to look at news or weather.

As it is, it's not much different in feel to 7, just a bit slicker/faster. I'll never go back now :)

Sounds like you have been assimilated by the Win95,98,XP,Vista ,Win7 UI layout which has more or less remained the same for many decades, however there is ClassicShell,Start8 etc for those that refuse to go with the Win+X menu in Win8.

i suppose there is only one way to find out, must try it and stop convincing myself that i don't want it lol.

I hope it dies like an aborted foetus and we can have a serious desktop OS again, none of this tablet friendly crap - one can hope despite rumours metro is here to stay.

Well I've tried it on the desktop and expressed my distaste, I can't imagine the tablet experience being fantastic, have you tried it on a tablet?

I already have an Android tablet and Smartphone(which are great for my needs) so answer is no,I only use Win8 on my two desktop PCs and laptop.

Btw I was speaking as a Win8 desktop/laptop PC user not Win8 tablet user,I won't comment on Win8 tablet because not tried one.

I will say I use my Win8 PC to transfer files to my Android tablet and Smartphone just fine,no point me buying Win8 tablet to be honest.

as I said before, metro is here to stay. MS won't be bring back the start menu.

so either get use to it or customize it or stick with win7 for 10year+

they are your only options.

To be fair XP (if you measure by official release and end of support) has lasted 15 years...I could see 7 lasting that long too.

On the other hand I've just installed 8 and Server 2012 at work...

They may not for their mainstream OS, I don't mind moving to a server type OS if the functionality is there without the kiddie skin.

Only time will tell where they'll go. If they have any sense they'll notice that people have different likes and allow more customisation, like the classic/advanced start menu options in previous releases.

Microsoft can't help but see people paying money on 3rd party software to fix their OS. Maybe they'll bring out their own paid for version, that would rile everyone :D
