BMW and M Power Owners

Which key do you have? I believe the procedure varies depending on the type of key, but most E46's have the diamond shaped key in which case the procedure is as follows:

1. with the both keys, get in the car and close all windows and doors.
2. Put working key into the ignition and turn to position 1 (the accessories should turn on)
3. turn the key back to position 0 and take key out of the ignition.
4. hold down the unlock button, press the Roundel (lock button) 3 \ntimes, and release the unlock button. Doors should lock and unlock.

It's diamond shaped-ish. Step 4.. I take it that is with the non working key?
I'll give this a bash, thanks.

Cheers guys.:)

I've had a look today and it's gone, oddly, the water doesn't smell or look oily either so I guess the two things are unrelated. The oil does smell of fuel and is a bit dark for 4 month old stuff, I guess that's maybe something to do with short journeys too maybe? Running rich while cold etc.

It will carbonize quickly, mines takes a couple of weeks for it to start to turn from new oil & filter using castrol edge.

Oops, sorry that is indeed with the non working key.

On an unrelated note, I've finally done the next steps of my cooling system overhaul on the E46. Just finished fitting a new top hose (old one was damaged) and radiator so one less thing to worry about. Worryingly, the radiator was banana shaped and had a few rows of fins that were swollen

Pfft. Mine's been puffing out little jets of steam for weeks now. :D

That's next after drivechain oils.

Robbie, do you neve accelerate in your car?

5mm on the back and front?

Hmm that's an interesting point and I never once thought about it when I got that print.

Just checked with the calliper and the fronts read

Rears are 1mm less. I do accelerate from higher revs more often than I should sometimes.

I don't know what the dealer used to measure, maybe a potato :p

Edit*
And they've got the tyre size wrong as well, rears are 245/40...

So uhm yeah, stick to the indy :D

Hey Atari, did you get the parts from BMW or somewhere else?

The top hose was from BMW and was £23.something, the others all looked fine when I took them off so I left those. The radiator was from BM Parts on eBay and set me back a princely £50 brand new. Build quality seems to be okay and I couldn't see any major difference between it and the BMW one I replaced it for. Except the swollen/broken bits :D

The waterpump is okay and was changed about a year ago (before I bought the car), and I've changed the coolant expansion tank/bottle when I first got the car as it was loosing coolant quite quickly.

Ta :)

Haha I've noticed little puffs of steam coming out of the top grills by the windscreen and occasionally from the front after turning the car off, but I think it was the old rad being blocked which caused it to swell up in places and blow the top hose off completely.

Nice easy job when you've got a 32mm spanner - I neglected to get this thinking I had one. Stripped out a few parts before realising I had to go get one :p

I'm trying to find out information on retrofitting either of the following, but am not having much joy...

1) usb into the armrest
2) dab

I want them both to hook into the idrive system. There is so much info out there that I just don't know where to start. My setup is an e91 2007 with the 8" ccc idrive system. I have a single menu button with the maps on a DVD in the dash and with the programmable buttons. Looking at wiki it looks like I have the ccc update 1.

Any ideas on if these options are possible?

I know that to get BMW to do the USB (6FL) retrofit it was around £600. This included labour, coding and parts.

However, now anyone can do coding with a piece of software and a laptop, and DIY it, it should be a bit less. The retrofit kit is around £300 inc VAT now and includes a whole bunch of parts you need (USB hub, power supplies, cables, connectors etc etc)

Here's the official BMW retrofit DIY

would retrofitting invalidate my AUC warranty as well?

Depends. On your iDrive - perhaps, if they wanted to be difficult. On something totally unconnected to iDrive no, in the real world, this wouldn't happen.

What make was the rad out of interest?

What's OE on these?

Mines specifically out the front of the radiator, it's sporadic which I'm finding quite strange but it's going to be corrosion. Might go and get some antifreeze tomorrow and pull it out for a look see what's up with it. It's the original, and it doesn't look that bad at all in situ which is a bit of a bummer but hey ho.

Congrats, you have bought a great car. In the best colour. This is looking to be a real contender for next car!

What options did you go for? How much did you get off it, if that isn't too crass to ask? Some dealers are doing 10% discounts.

Thanks :)

I kept the options fairly light:

Sports auto
Pro Nav
Rear park sensors and cruise control
Sun protection pack
+other standard kit such as xenons etc

The main options for me were the sports auto and nav. I would've liked more (adaptive ride, visibility and a few other gadgets) but needed to be sensible with the cost.

Managed to get 8% off and 5 year service pack thrown in. Yeah it is possible to get 10% off. When I ordered I enquired at five different dealership groups across the UK and was very disappointed of the level of service so decided to stick with my local dealer.

Unbranded to be honest, it had a 12 month warranty and side by side I couldn't see many differences between the old one and this one. Link is here:

I believe you can get Valeo ones from ECP for £125 - probably a bit less if you go via Carparts4less or discount codes.

To be honest, from the front and top, my rad didn't look like it had any problems, the bottom end however was warped quite noticeably which I think is a common issue. I'll see if I can get some pics of it tomorrow.
