Driving long distance

Whenever i drive down to Cornwall (720 miles, 11-12 hours) i take a break every three hours or so. The wife (can't drive) keeps me stocked up on food and drink and either chat to her or listen to music while keeping a wary eye for potholes.

Its amazing what you get used to.
I did a motorway run for the last couple of years.

North west, Paisley, Tewkesbury back to the North west
690 miles per night 5 nights a week.

Drive something that's noisy, uncomfortable and cold. I guarantee sleep will be the least of your concerns :D

My car meets that criteria, you'd rather walk after a couple of hours. The good thing is you are forced to take a break at that point as you'll be running on fumes. :o

my longest trip in time was 9hrs the mileage was only 300miles(Glasgow to my home in long eaton).
the problem was all the road works on the M6 and A50 near me, the A50 roadworks took 1hr to travel just 1 mile lol
I stopped twice for food n drink and stretch my legs.
the same route without the road works took just 3hr 35mins

I drove from Somerset to Belgium in one go, 450 miles. Have a stop as soon as you feel tired, grab a coffee or redbull. Eat. Open the windows. Radio loud.

Was my first time driving on the opposite side of the road, and it was over night, so I stayed awake probably from focusing on my driving.

What does everyone do to keep themselves from locking up? I am driving down to Essex on wednesday, which is 260 miles (4.5 hours) which is long enough, but I also intend on driving an hour out of my way to halifax to pick up some materials. This makes a total drive time of 5.5 hours, longer than I have ever driven in a day (previous was to bormingham).

I can make it about 2 hours before I really badly stiffen up, and after that its every hour or so I have to stop (I know this is good practice anyway!) but am still quite uncomfortable afterwards!

I also want to drive back up again on the nighttime, or maybe a cheap travelodge if I feel I cannot make it back up.

What do you do to keep yourself occupied, awake etc. I am in a diesel mondeo, and its pretty much all motorway (a1(m) and M11!) which is bad enough!

Plus, I fancy some podcasts to stick on while I am in the car. So spec me something funny / nerdy / interesting.

Man up.

Its not a massive distance or long time.

It is when I am hoping to get back up on the nighttime, going to be 5.5 hours down all motorway, and 4.5 hours back up. Not a long time? I can think of things I would rather be doing!

It is when you sieze up after an hour and a half! It becomes so uncomfortable that I have to keep stopping. I was driving for 5 hours 3 months ago (round trip stopping at various places to pick stuff up) and I was in quite a bit of pain with my ankle by the end of it.

I work in engineering, so while I can give tips for standing up for 12 hours, I rarely drive more than half an hour (my usual trip to and from work)

Do you drive an original Mini or something?

Lol :D, actually, its a Mondeo MK3 facelift. I am 6ft, and have long legs (and size 14 feet). Its comfier than my Rover! I still do not feel like I fit in it properly though.

I wasn't saying its easy peasey, more that it seems a rare enough thing that you do (half an hour usually), so surely its just something you get on and do?

Longest I have driven is from South Wales to the South of France in just over a day! Almost non stop. Only stopped for fuel and small breaks! Plus had a rest on the ferry obviously.

Oh, I will be doing it, was just hoping there was a magic cure for 'jammed into a car for too long' syndrome :D. I have downloaded a load of podcasts, from comedy to nerdy, so should be quite entertained. Wish I had cruise control. The car was advertised with it, but didn't actually have it, though it was in excellent condition for an even more excellent price so I bought it anyway.

I drove from SE London to Edinburgh and back this week, around 900mile round trip in all, although not on the same day that would be crazy, i found listening to Podcasts, or Radio2 helped with the talking, music sends me off too quickly, and i find having Loud music just tires me out even quicker.
