I have just bought a Samsung 840 pro. I am going to install windows 7 64 bit. I have an Asus Maximus V Gene motherboard.

Is the only BIOS change I need to do is change to AHCI mode?

Before installing windows do I need to run the CD that came with the drive?

yeah set to ahci, once windows is installed you can install the things off the cd that came with the ssd,it will probably have samsung magician tool,it tweaks windows to improve the ssd speed/lifespan ect

remember to set the ssd as your first boot device in the bios

Thanks.

When installing windows is just the same as when doing it with a normal hard drive? Will I need to format the SSD?

yeah and yeah, windows will ask as your installing it just do normal format and install

if you have an intel board then grab the intel rapid storage drivers off your motherboards website and install those after windows,it will improve speeds further

To add to the above, the latest version of the samsung magician tool is also downloadable from Samsung's website.

Edit: Also, assuming you are using windows 7 if you format as part of the installation it will create a separate partition for the system files. If you would prefer it not to do this then format the drive using another program first before running the windows installation

One last question. To change it to AHCI mode I go into the bios > go to advanced > got to sata configuration > go to sata mode selection > set it to AHCI

yeah there might be more than one option as two ports are marvell controlled just set both to ahci to be sure

I have a Asus P5QL Pro Board, when you say intel rapid storage drivers, on my board download page it says Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager Driver, is that the same you think, cheers

What is the best thing to do ? allow it to create a separate partition, or format it before installin, cheers

Thank you for fast reply and confirmation, also will i need to install the Marvell 6121 SATA Driver, as i was told these were just for the ide slots on the board and not sata at all ?, also my board came with a installation disc, will i also have to install everything on that dvd ? cheers

windows will install its own drivers for the marvell ports, you can install the drivers if you want later but its not essential

just install the lan drivers off the cd and go to your motherboard website to download/install the more updated drivers as the ones on the cd will be outdated

Yeh i was going to do that, but not sure exactly what drivers to download and install, i suppose i cant really make a mistake if i did install something i dont need as long as its the latest version, as there is like Intel Chipset Inf Update Program, ACPI driver for ATK 0110 virtual device, ATK0110 driver, etc etc i thought windows 7 installs acpi and intel chip drivers by default on install.

it does but they might not be as new as on the website

the main things to install are intel rapid storage drivers, chipset drivers,usb3 drivers lan drivers intel igpu drivers for onboard graphics and sound drivers

So do you think it would be best to run the mother board driver dvd that comes with the board, then just update all the drivers if needed ? as surely it should have everything i need, i did not see any chipset drivers on the download page, they would be on dvd would they not ?, cheers

if you want to,theres no right or wrong way

windows should install all drivers needed for you,its then upto you to update them if need be

the intel rapid storage drivers should contain the chipset drivers aswell

Ok, thx for your time on this, especially on a saturday night, cheers, its been like 8 years since i built a pc and its all changed so much, im still on a thunderbird cpu and 512mb ram and 9700pro :)
