Lord British Presents

The trend away from on screen text chat also killed games like this if you ask me. Back then everyone on screen chatted via text anyone could see, so you could evesdrop and chip in and get some interaction going on spec. Now everyone is in their own private teamspeak thing or similar and there just isn't the opportunity to interact in the same way.

If this does turn out to be a proper successor to Ultima Online, do you think he will step away from everything fans loved? Will he keep the perspective? Artwork? Chat interaction? Inventory system?

I think also the fact that really the internet was still in its infancy, I mean like you said it was word of mouth more than anything, none of this check a forum, find out, or check a site and find out, all in game like a real old style world.

I remember selling a key that would open any lock. In actual fact it didn't open anything but I would have an unlocked chest and open it and they would believe me and buy it off of me. Things got hot which people moaning so I left town, met up with a roaming ganker, he knew of a settlement somewhere, we were there. I went in acting like a noob, while my friend flanked them and we slaughtered them all, stripped down and bathed/danced in their blood.

That's just it you could scam people and they learnt from it rather than you being seen as a bad guy, murder was permitted on the server with consequences - I'm not talking pvp here folks I'm' talking MURDER with bounties placed on their heads etc and it was their HEADS that had to be turned in to collect!

Ultima Online - those who haven't played it will never understand! :(

It was the best game I had ever played.

Faction Wars - oh the days of staying awake 24/7 to hold and wait for the sigils to corrupt. Meeting new people and using ICQ/UOAM.

Crafting - where crafting actually mattered.

BlueBears house at Yew moongate. Such an awesome guy to know when you were a PK'er! :)

I haven't seen a game that competes with the way UO's combat system/PvP was. Enabled you to play solo and within a group - none of this boring class system and arena/RvR style crap.

I literally had 3 accounts full of characters - Faction/PK'er/Black Smith/Thief/etc...

Shame EA ****ed it up with Age of Shadows. :(

If this is a Ultima Online "Spiritual Successor" kickstarter...

Many many people will be throwing money at their screens.

With possibly this and Elite, just proves that good games never die.

Imagine the horror if this thing needs Origin :(

I will be turning up at EA HQ with a torch and pitchfork, who is with me?

If it's a kickstarter I'll be funding in a moment. Carmageddon, Elite - things just get better :)

Anyone heard of Brad McQuaid? He was idolised after giving the world Everquest (although he can't take all the credit). As UO players, you probably know of EQ :p

Anyway, he left SOE and founded Sigil games, who then "released" Vanguard (MMO). Only it was a complete disaster, and flopped hard on release. Apparently they tried to re-design the game 3 months before it was due to be released, scrapping most of the systems they had.

Anyway... I'm not sure if this Richard Gariott chap is anything like Brad McQuaid, but one guy should never take all the credit, and you shouldn't ever count on lightning striking twice.

Except Vanguard was a stunning game that was flawed because it was forced to be shipped unfinished by SOE. The game is still going now and has always had systems implemented that are only just being talked about again now. It was another SWG brilliant in so many areas and so unfinished in others but at least it attempted something other than the generic which seems to be what everyone hates about most MMOs these days.

Vanguard was anything but stunning on release, when I tried to play it. In fact it's safe to say it was awful. And not just because of bugs, which you can forgive (on launch). It was just crap.

Let's not forget either that it has not been Brad or his company working on it since release - since half of them were rounded up and fired in the company parking lot. It has been developed by SOE for years now, and Brad fled into hiding, not resurfacing for 5 years (he's now back at SOE).

So the point is still valid. Don't expect great things from people who have been involved in past successes. They can still deliver a turd given half a chance.

Well I beg to differ and you may want to check your facts - Brad was specifically hired back by SOE to work on Vanguard. And if you look it is now one of the highest rated MMOs by players. At least it tried something different and gave it a good shot. Which is more than can be said for a lot of big MMOs that have been released over the last 18 months. And that last part is plain daft yes they can deliver rubbish but some people are consistently good and always deliver eg Miyamoto etc.

Check my facts? Brad left Vanguard in 2007. He was re-hired in 2012. The game was developed for 5 years without him being there in any capacity...

Also, have you read this?

Says a lot about how great Brad was when put in charge of his own company. He was an ideas man, and he had some good ideas at times, but ultimately he killed the project that was supposed to be his "Vision".

Holy crap... UO... twas an amazing game. I spent quite some time as a bard with the entice ability pulling nobles looking for dungeons/adventure out of the guard protected area and punking their little ***** asses for gold and magic weapons.

Those were the days :D

VG was a ******* abortion of a game, people being hired becuase they were sleeping with senior members of the company, awful awful awful dev team, yeah it had some cool classes but that's it.

I think saying the game was developed is a stretch! Not developed would be more accurate. But he was re-employed to help the F2P. But horses for courses I know a load of people I played with who were crippled by the bugs I wasn't however so it gives me a very different slant.

Anyway who cares about the past - roll on this afternoon - well stoked for this I know it's going to be good (please).

It has to be Ultima related, or he wouldn't be using the Lord British name. I'm just terrified it'll be Britannia - The Musical or something equally off the wall.
