Budget of £120,current best android phone?

Try and get a phone with 1GB of RAM or more. 512mb of RAM is poor for Ice Cream Sandwich. I'd recommend second hand GS2, very solid phone still.
Hard to get that for £120 even given or take 20 quid!

I too think that at that budget that he should try WP8 phones like the Lumia 620, O2 have a "sale" and CWH will match so it's £130 with a topup.

my mums looking at android even though i keep telling her she'd love the iphone, i'll look at a few of these links and check them out for her, shes pretty useless at researching these type of things

Thought the SD and the SF2 were being sold SIM-unlocked? There were a lot of people on these forums buying them to use on giffgaff a while ago.

the san diego is completely locked down, you cannot even put a custom rom on it. you can however flash 1 other rom apart from stock which is an asia release rom for the phone over there.

you can only use it on t-mobile or orange.

imo it is a good phone if your budget is £100 and your on one of those networks, otherwise it has to be the G300, then unlock and root it, then flash the latest CM from modaco.

modaco has all the info you need on these 2 phones, xda doesn't.

I didn't realize, that's a shame! :( I guess if they're selling them at subsidised prices it's not in their interests for people to buy them adn take them to competing networks like they were doing with the SF, but still...

What's the best PAYG phone for £200 at the mo?

better off saving another £40 and getting a nexus 4, nothing in the £150-£200 bracket comes close, the nexus 4 is basically a £500 phone for £240 due to google not selling for a profit.

the SF2 probably can be unlocked but the G300 is a much much better phone.

the SF2 is the same as a Monte Carlo with a smaller screen, so if he is looking at the SF2 the MC is another better option due to the bigger screen.

My wife has went from SF -> MC -> G300 -> Nexus 4

I went from N8 -> G300 -> HTC One X -> Nexus 4

so I have first hand experience of all the above phones and the G300 is way better than a SF2 which is the exact same as a MC but with smaller screen.

I have more than enough budget for a Nexus 4, but the amount of possible defects worry me. Backlight bleed etc, drives me insane as everyone on here knows. :D

Got the G300 recently, very happy with it so far. £85 from Vodaphone, with £10 top up and then £5 for an unlock code from eBay.

Personally would look at some of the cheaper Lumia(620/520) phones at that price range WP is a much better user experience, expect maybe missing apps. If there is apps you need that are not yet on the platform then that's a problem.

+1 I've had an iPhone, Android & Windows Phone and i've found that the windows phone has just worked. I do only use it for calling/texting & web use don't really bother with apps but most people that I know that have used the system like it.

I'm using a lumia 800 and its a tough phone dropped it with the free cover on loads of times & its not got a scratch on it

defects? i am not aware of any please do tell.

i don't have any backlight bleed on my nexus 4, i just checked and it seems fine to me.

also if you have a more than enough budget then why are you asking for a sub £200 phone?

if a top of the range phone doesn't suit you then there is no chance any phone under £200 will, the cheaper you go the less quality you are like to find, there in more defects.

you are in a minority, anyone who has usually used an iphone and/or an android system, would most likely never switch to any other OS they are superior, as for the whole apps thing, apps make the phone more useful, rather than just having a phone, i have a sat nav, tv guide, sports guide, weather guide, tour guide, gaming, etc all in one.

even my dad who is over 50 cannot believe how good his GS3 is over his old nokia, he even said this may be the first phone he never wants to upgrade from, even though in the past he has upgraded at least once every 18 months.

I had a Desire HD & found it Laggy & a useless phone. I had the 3g Iphone & found that to be ok till they updated the iOS.

The nokia comes with a good sat nav already installed on it. Its hooked up to xbox live & has lots of games. Fully integrated with Facebook so i can swap between facebook chat & text messages on contacts.

Aswell as that even after having it for a year & im on the latest operating system its still very responsive unlike other phones that start to show there age due to OS updates for newer phones
