*** The Official Google Nexus 7 Thread ***

Anyone know how to disable google from syncing everything and disable google account but retain the ability to use google play. ie only allow the google account to work with some google services?

Another thing that realy annoys me is that the location services is either on or off. There should be an application specific location services option. I want to use location services for maps, but not for everything else i do. Typical google.

Theres an app to restrict gps for apps, if i remember the name i will post it :p

I understand that you can plug in a USB stick or portable HDD via a USB otg cable, just wondered if they take a lot of battery from the tablet when your playing something like a movie ?.

My portable HDD is pretty heavy on the juice when I run it but it might be worth considering a a pendrive. Naturally the upside of the hdd is that I have 1.5TB of space and usually use it when I have fully charged the N7. I did try buying one of those dual OTG cables but that didn't work out.

I am just testing watching a movie via the hdd and OTG whilst it is sat in the dock and plugged into the mains. Plugged into a pc via USB does not provide enough power to stop the drain on the battery from the hdd.

Will post back the results in an hour or so.

Cheers, I actually already have a 64GB pen drive so I might stick with that.

Well further testing has shown me that playing movies via OTG from the hdd only slows down battery depletion but it still consumes a fair whack of battery. This is when sitting in the official dock and charging from the mains with the official charger and cable. Shame really but then it is a physical drive. Wonder how well an SSD might fair.

Ok, might be worth just using a pen drive or downloading the file to the nexus 7 when using nexus importer.

Strange battery issue with mine, it powers off when its on around 25% I suspected something was odd because when I took it off charge the other day at 100%, I used it for around an hour, some browsing and youtube and it was still showing 100% when I put it down. It looks like the battery level is dropping but it isn't reporting the correct %, anyone else had this?

Anyone fancy a Nexus 7 Retina this May? :) I imagine this will be a freebie for Google I/O attendees.

I expect a bump in screen resolution and processor, and not much else (maybe a change in dimensions - thinner, narrower bezel). That article suggests an S4 Pro, but I don't think this is enough of an upgrade on the Tegra3 to be worth it. Tegra4 (not 4i) or S600 hopefully (S800 is doubtful at this price point).

Retina means nothing nowdays!

Perhaps you should read what the biggest gripe from the (hugely selling) ipad mini owners is? Your comment vastly overestimates the number of retina capable devices available and number of sales of such devices that have taken place. In the future, yes, retina would be considered 'nothing', but until the market matures and prices come down, it is something to be welcomed.

I meant that apples definition of retina means nothing, they choose multiple dpi'sas retina, iisn't the 15 inch mac book 220 dpi and the nexus 7 216? In that case it is retina anyway!

Not when it comes to returns.

Then buy it from a high street store - it's cheaper than buying from Google too. You can't return it to Google for a refund after 15 days anyway. All repairs/replacments can go through Asus.

Could anyone recommend the best ROM for this please?

Paranoid Android is by far the best imo.

Hmm just realised that as the TNT collection bag arrived in the post by TNT. Had to set up collection, item being sent to Holland (Asus). The whole process of setting up the RMA and now the collection hasn't been pleasant.
Considering it arrived with a broken screen and now all of this messing around, I can't be bothered to buy another.

Google's support was just poor, I asked what the account number was as it's needed for TNT collection, they sent me the RMA number...
