Virgin for gaming

Hi,

Sorry for posting this in here instead of the broadband forum but I think i'd get more responses in this forum. I'm fed up waiting for BT to sort out FTTC in my area. The cabinets are all done but the whole exchange area keeps moving to the right and I've sent an email to the task id and had a non committal response on each occasion. Do any of you use Virgin Cable for gaming, particulary FPS's like DayZ and Arma ? I realise that the quality of service is dependent on each neighbourhood and the way other Virgin customers use their broadband, just want a feeling of if all things are ok is Cable good enough or will it be a pain in the arse ?

Any advice/feedback would be most appreciated. My ADSL connection is ~3MB, I've got 3 kids, 2 of which are now old enough to want to stream TV etc. I'm considering the 100Mb package and am aware of the virgin 30day money back g'tee.

Thanks for reading.

Greg

it depends where you live. In South Manchester, an unresolved line fault had me raging for a year before I switched from VM to BT.

Thanks so far folks, I'm just nervous of Virgin as I had so many problems with NTL / C&W billing screwups a long time back + it's easy to find unhappy complaints online instead of happier customers.

Very varied depending on region, I had it in Southampton and it was appalling (worse than ISDN or interleaved ADSL) due to packetloss during peak hours. Tech support were useless as well.

Also in Southampton and never had service like it, ping is always relatively low and cracking speed at 126mb.

This is my pingtest. Welling/Bexleyheath area:

Arknor, If you're in Newcastle, couldn't it find a closer server than Maidenhead?

dunno I let it select the best one based on ping.

I don't think you get a choice? oh wait you can choose but they are all down south anyway

Not quite Pompey, but 60mb cable bbi here.

Solid as a rock, i was getting 20ms pings to European DayZ servers.

I've had VM in 3 different parts of Birmingham. One was fine but the other two gave me a lot of problems. Depending on where you live you will experience a lot of problems caused by high utilisation in the evenings. E.g. lag spikes.

Someone told me that these are worst in student areas though, so maybe you won't suffer if you don't live near a uni.

Im on a 60mb Virgin connection. Overall it is absolutely great for gaming and downloading. You do get the odd hour or two of downtime every couple of months though. Ping is normally 15-35

Have a friend here (Southampton) and he finds it much the same, just beyond useless, gaming is completely pointless unless single player, it's just completely unusable for it.

60mbit in East London and its rubbish - loads of Jitter between 20ms and 100ms no good for FPSing. I still play but it drives me nuts.

If its good its great if its bad.. Dont go there ADSL is better if u can get fttc.

they are still upgrading this area (old C and W ) but every engineer i spoken to said its one of the biggest cluster **** bodge jobs they have ever seen

Its so frustrating being 15 miles away from central London but having a woeful connection with no sign of FTTC...

not actually bothered too much anymore ive given up hope :)
