The *Official* Eve Online Thread

I've cut right down recently.. 3-4 hours a week at the moment, if that. Although I've had a lot of fun tonight so might make it more regular again...

That's not much at all. I guess the initial stages of developing your character is what requires a lot of time to be invested, unless you want to develop really slowly of course.

hmmm....

Yeh it really depends how you want to play it. As you can imagine, if you only play a few hours a week at the start you are potentially going to have moments where you aren't training skills optimally, you won't be making as much money etc. But if you don't mind the game being drawn out further then it's not a problem.

Thinking back the first month was probably some of the most fun I've had on Eve. An entirely new universe that I knew nothing about, no idea how to fit ships properly. If you are only playing casually at first I would really recommend NOT using EFT or getting ship fits recommended to you. The game was far more exciting in general when you weren't just flying cookie cutter fits because they have the best stats. I still remember flying a shield tanked Coercer, with arty for long rang targets, pulse lasers for mid range and blasters for upclose targets. Not to mention a tractor beam and a smartbomb! :p

Awesome fit!

As a new character you can have a nosy around with a degree of impunity most people will leave you alone and you can see what it's all about. And the risk rewards mechanics mean you can do truly fun and stupid stuff without any consequences.

The benefit of eve and only devoting small amounts of time is your skills train offline. So you can potentially see fairly sizable gains between login sessions. As long as you're able to use Evemon/evehq to plan and optimize your skillqueue.

Can be handy because early on in the game there is a lot of waiting for a skill to finish so you can do something.

There was a great article a while back about the Chinese server and how they have effectively just formed a massive single alliance where they all effectively work together.

That actually scares the bejeesus out of me :) If they ever manage to overthrow their government, they'll be running the world ten years later.

Thanks for the feedback chaps, I think I'll have another stab at it in a few weeks times. The only problem I have is being completely overwhelmed by it all. Once you've done the tutorials I have no idea how and where to go about doing things :p I guess joining a corp straight away is the best thing to do

Yeh join something like Eve Uni or RvB. Nice and beginner friendly. Although I imagine they might push you towards cookie cutter fits which will take some of the fun in experimenting out of the game, depends whether you care about that I guess!
Drop by the ocuk chat channel either way.

But for a beginner learning the ropes it is worth a stint before moving on. And it's better than being stuck without anything to do knowing what to do and then giving up or worse getting in some corp that will just scam you. He doesn't have to stop in there forever!

Don't join EVE Uni...I robbed them...they teach you nothing and if you do something they don't like (i.e fly into low sec, null sec or even auto-pilot anywhere) your OUT!

Join someone awesome...like...um...not sure...TEST? I've learnt a lot more whilst being a part of TEST than I have anywhere else...also, the free ship program for new-bros is awesome and you get soooo much free goodies and help and the ship reimbursement is second to none.

EDIT: You also get to fight AGAINST GOONS!! :D :D

EDIT EDIT: Floydy hey man, yeah, Floydy has it, RvB are also a great shout.

Ahh test. Slowly backing away from HBC and being on good terms with goons it seems lol

Think they just realized they're surrounded by mostly incompetent morons on the eve of a big null shake up that could spell galactic war >.<

I'd suggest joining a small ish focused corp that does something you like. Learn to become independant and self sufficient.

If you just join a mega coalition alliance you'll be showered with money. Told what to do and never make a name for yourself. Rather than learning how to appreciate and make money, learning how to fit and fly ships by playing with it. and progressing naturally through a few smaller more focused communities. Before diving into the big pond.

Otherwise, you're just test/goon/NC fodder.

If I had to describe may corp, I'd say technically it is a dictatorship, but can't say I've ever seen any of the bad things you'd usually associate with that. I can picture any fully democratic corp in Eve to probably be really indecisive and never get anything done...
It's hard to think of it as a dictatorship if it happens that everyone wants to be doing the same thing anyway :p

TEST aint friendly with goons. Kind of hating each other lol

I said recently it "seems" like test are slowly backing away from HBC and hinting (slowly) at peace with goons.

As for dictatorships. I've not voted for my CEO and i've not seen many, if any corps where you come in and vote for a party or leader. That is beyond your control. There is a leader and a group of officers. as picked by the leader or other officer role players. They manage the corp. put you in squads and things. Military style. Ruled by a single person or small governing body with leadership being inherited through chain of command usually.

Did my first level 4 since I've been back - The Blockade - result 150km range down to 12km - the TD is a bit over the top. Now I know why I hate missions and normally avoid them.
