*** The 2013 Gym Rats Thread ***

To save everyone digging through the mass of poo:

.Bench: 518 (500 in competition)
Deadlift: 710
Squat: 540
I started out Olympic lifting. These numbers are from when I was 17:
Clean and jerk: 245
Press(which they don;t do any more): 210
Snatch: 200

A bit of exercise variation can work wonders.

Decline/incline/machine press for bench.

Front squats/hack squats/leg press

GHR's/RDL's etc

Saw some pretty good progression for the 6 weeks I trained DC but wasn't eating enough before these started to tail off. Coming back to an exercise you'll find you *could* storm through a previous plateau.

I do some variation. Though, maybe I should stop being so stressed over squat/dead/bench.

Eating is another big thing here too!

Bit OT and not sure how interested you'll be but Arnie did an AMA on reddit fitness. He doesn't answer a massive amount of questions, but some nice answers on the ones he did. His PBs are pretty strong too :)

Awesome. Something about reading his comments really reaffirms the awesomeness of the hobby, he still clearly knows his stuff and shows the simpler more old school routines still rule.

Some highlights:

Best Exercise?
Arnold Schwarzenegger said:
Chin-ups, no question. I think if you are doing only one exercise, you're getting your most bang for the buck. The biceps, serratus, forearms, lats, the whole back. You can switch grips to change the focus, too. So if there is only one, that's it.

Dat strength gain program.
Arnold Schwarzenegger said:
You probably won't like this... When I was gaining strength, I liked to warm up with 10,8,6,4 and then stay at 2 reps for five sets, and then back to 4, then 6, and then use the stripping method and just drop plates and keep doing 4 reps until I couldn't.

On Stronglifts (Hell yes, pretty sure everyone here gets recommended to add chins earlier in the routine)

I like that you're doing the big lifts. I wish there were chin ups.

Nutrition
Arnold Schwarzenegger said:
Again, this wasn't something I could change because it wasn't possible, but in an ideal situation I could have had more meat. My family just didn't have enough money. I knew I needed more protein, but it just wasn't a possibility. Until I was 18, I could only get meat once a week, and I drank skim milk powder with yeast and eggs. It was a horrible drink. In an ideal world, I would have had at least three meals a day with meat.
The year I spent in the army and had meat every day, I gained 25 pounds.

Love the tank comment :D

Also begbie, he did powerlifting before being a bodybuilder.

I seen that mate, it seems that he was more directed into bodybuilding rather than through choice than anything.

We were just talking about him, he really is an idol. Everything he touches he does well in, bodybuilding, film, politics. Amazing, so much respect for him.

Many Americans would contest that viewpoint, many of them hated him and his policies. As for acting, let's be fair, he is a terrible actor! Don't get me wrong, he is my favourite actor ever, an absolute legend and for me the most iconic of our generation. He has the best one liners and just a pleasure to watch. He is bad though, like Michael Caine bad :D still love him though.

Nice... chinups... :-)

I can't believe how far I've come! I've lose a tremendous amount of flab, I can see my upper abs taking shape, I’m just down to the most stubborn of lower ab fat.

Not in my wildest dreams did I think this was going to happen, but to be honest losing fat so far has been a 'piece of cake'! Calorie deficit + weights and cardio. Then it's just a matter of waiting for it to happen.

I can see I'm super close to a bulk! Shame I have terrible stretch marks on my stomach, but that’s from a period of my life that is over and behind me. I was 82kg when I was 18yrs old!

Blame it on college lunches!

Im not sure when I need to stop dieting tho? When I'm happy with fat%?

---

Strength wise tho, my initial goals are to achieve boby weight dips and pull ups. Im almost there with the dips.

As people said mate, diet and weights :)

Glad its giving you the results you desire, continue dieting to where you are happy or if strength appears to stall I guess, then up the calories a touch and monitor it each week.

Get your log going again and put your workouts in there.

Smashing gym session today jumping between DL and Bench (with drop sets) only to hit up London burger bash beasting 6 half gourmet burgers.... Smooth
