Forgot how bad job searching was :(

well another jobcenter visit and another reason im liable to go postal sooner than later.

this time the adviser in all their glory suggests i apply to go on the bins as thats what iv done before. yes thats what i was doing before i had to stop due to health reasons you idiot!!! i thought they where supposed to keep notes on your file. this is getting a tad silly now.

so im now in a bit of a situation and im not sure what to do.

basically at the end of last year/beginning of this year i started looking for a new job. i sent around my cv to a few local companies and one of the owners of one of the companies whose website said they didnt have any jobs came back to me the next day asking if i could go in and see them within a few days (before the owners jetted off to africa for a month)

anyways a month passes (them on holiday) so obviously i dont hear anything. anyways after a week of them being back (being the owners/directors etc i gave them some time to sort out stuff which may have arisen while they were away) i give them a call and she says that the work that they were expecting hadnt come in so they wasnt in a position to take anyone on and to come back to them in a few months if i was still looking.

so during this few months at my current place i get a new manager (who is a director so has some stature about him) we have some meetings where i argue my point of not having a payrise in the 5 years ive been here despite being promised one by the then managing director.

he comes back to me saying that he's put the wheels in motion but nothing hasnt given a figure etc. (i like my job and the company i work for but im not being paid enough)

so today i have an email from the owner of the company in the first paragraph saying that they now have a position and want "a chat" but me being me i hate asking about pay in interviews so i dont know what they are likely to offer but i also dont know what my current company would up my pay too.

whats your thoughts etc? sorry for the long post.

Been out of work for about 4 weeks now, i emailed a company about over an hour ago. They just phoned me up for an interview for this monday, so fingers crossed:)

Keep chasing your current employers regarding your possible pay rise. Do you think they are actually considering giving you a rise, or are they just keeping you sweet?

Also go in for a chat with the company you approached for a job... don’t be shy about raising your salary. I’ve interviewed a few people and always expect them to bring this up. In fact, it surprises me when people don’t ask about it.

If you get offered another job, how do you think your current company would react if said you’d be leaving if you didn’t have your pay rise confirmed? :D Might be an option...?

Your English made that difficult to read. I'd not give you a pay rise for that!

I do think he is trying to get a payrise for me. Ive emailed the company back about the other job, i havent got any annual leave left due to having to take a lot off at the start of the year to look after my little girl so have said that it would be difficult to come in before 5pm due to working and the lack of holidays. (its got to be good for both the company and me), the reason i dont like asking about salary is i feel as if they will pay me what they feel i am worth. I will in future ask though as i dont want to waste mine or their time.

sorry for my bad English, its one of my downfalls. luckily i'm paid to design things and not on my grammar.

That may be as much, but comparing two, on paper comparable candidates, but one has difficult to read writing/ communication like emails and the like and I'm damn sure you'd not get a look in. Harsh, but it's true.

Well if you're confident they are actually going to offer you a rise, and you're happy in your current job/working for that company, maybe just wait and see what rise they will be offering you? If they do this quick enough, you could use that as a negotiation tool for the other potential job when raising the salary question.

My wife is excellent in this department so I get her to correct my mistakes before I send them.

Generally i'm not too bad but I was posting that long reply from my phone and as this is a forum I tend not to worry about grammar as much.

I think they would be surprised, but then iv'e been here for 5 years without a pay increase as I was taken on at lower than the advertised rate due to "Lack of experience" so i have good reasons.

My new manager is aware of the pay situation which is why I think he's doing something about it.

Job interview today for 12:30, im actually a bit nervous but i guess that means i care. Knew about the interview since friday, wasnt the slightest bit nervous until today:p
Gone for a job that i have no experience in, but want to get into it. No experience apart from a bit of personal volunteer help.
Anyway wish me luck and ill post back how i get on.

Good luck - sure it will be fine. Hopefully the interviewers will be in a good mood after the nice weather over the past day or two!

Hope so, ive seen a pic of her on the website. She looks like a nice friendly lady, i guess you would have to be working in a care home.
Ive been for a poo about eight times today already, i still got about twenty minutes to i leave. No doubt i can fit in two more toilet sessions.

Just got back, i think it went ok. I was interviewed by two people, they seemed very nice and helped me out with some of the questions. They told me that some of there best staff started off with no experience, so thats good to hear.
Its 33 hours a week, working 12 hour shifts so im not sure how that works.

I can see why you'd have reservations about deciding what to do. Have this "chat" with the other company for sure.

As for me, I never ask about salary in a interview unless I'm asked about my expectations. If this other company decides to offer you a position you could do one of two things:

- Take it and move on.
- Use it as a bargaining chip at your existing workplace.

The latter being quite risky.

Was with EDF, but was unsuccessful (not enough experience, though none was needed).

I have however been offered a job with an aerospace company in their materials testing labs! Which I've accepted.

:D

Following on from this, I'm learning more about the perks of this new job! :)

25 instead of 21 days holiday, christmas through to new year off, weekends and bank holidays off. Overtime paid at time and a half for 38-50 hours, and double time on anything over 50 hours. Whereas I couldn't work overtime at my current job.
