[PCWORLD] AMD provides a sneak peek at its Radeon HD 7990

have you read this thread / articles yet? some interesting reading, it may be that FRAPS is not all that accurate anyway, even when it's telling you everything is fine...

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18500294

I have read the articles and they are indeed interesting reading. FRAPS is a handy tool but like you point out is isn't always accurate. Though it did bring to the fore the discussions about frame-times in multi-gpu. Finally AMD are going to attempt to address the stutter issues plaguing Crossfire out of the box.

As I have shown it can be fixed/reduced to much more acceptable levels but it would be nice if there was no need for messing with 3rd party tools.

AMD never released a 7990, they were built and released by board partners.
The old 7990's use Tahiti XT chips, the new card will be using Tahiti XT2 which allows for higher clocks at lower voltage hence only 2 8 pin power connectors instead of 3.
Bit of info here http://www.legitreviews.com/news/15323/

So essentially its a completely different card to the ones currently sold as HD7970X2's and HD7990's? I hope AMD go with a different name or at least some kinda of suffix, HD7999 maybe lol.

I think the idea is that a 3-legged cow would be easier to keep still while pressing the red-hot iron to its flesh. Seems to me like it would flinch and fall over, though...

They create a successful line of products then the next year they change the logo, probably at great expense, for no apparent reason other than to confuse the uninformed buyer (or scare them off into the safe and welcoming Intel i3/i5/i7 branded products)

See Fusion, AMD Llano APUs and now Trinity. Now they look like they are bringing a new and improved dual GPU card out and calling it the same as an older model. Even Nvidia have the grace to stick on a ti suffix

They never brought out an older model though, that was toggled together and named by board partners.
The Malta card is the true 7990.

[chiploco] AMD Radeon HD 7990 dual-GPU launch date confirmed

AMD will be launching their flagship Radeon HD 7990 dual-GPU graphics card on April 24, credible sources from within the industry told us. Some selected members of press have already got hands on samples of HD 7990 and they are testing the graphics cards for launch day reviews. However, it is not confirmed whether the 24th of April is the paper launch day or card will also be available for public on the same day. Some reports tell us that in Europe and America, the card will be available for purchase on same day but in other regions of the world, the card will hit retail channel on a later date.

The Radeon HD 7990 was first shown on GDC by AMD last month. And on a later date, picture of two HD 7990s running in Crossfire was leaked on the internet. From the details that are known as yet, the Radeon HD 7990 is based on a completely new chip codenamed ?Malta? and it has three 90mm fans for cooling along with two 8-pin PCIe connectors for power.

I'm not sure about the source.

Will be good from the point of view that there may be a new driver with new features foremost from my pov and also to see if there is new tech in the actual way CrossFire is delivered on the 7990.

I looked up that and indeed the 7970 provides better frame times than the 680 but if they can improve it further then great. Hope it brings more performance mainly though as smoothness feels the same to me even before 13.3. :)

Will you be getting one?

If i can convince my mrs to let me have one. In all probability, no. :D
