Why is tax so high ?

Why don't you Brits stop finger ******* communism and finally stick your **** in it! If 20% is good 100% is better. 100% tax on everything!

100% tax is for wimps that haven't got the plums to go the full hog. I propose compound taxation. Everyone should pay tax on the tax that they have been lucky enough to already pay. Anyone that pays less that 200% tax is a dirty scrouger!

Tax is high because we want so much from the State.

And by that I mean not to have to concern ourselves with the sick, disabled, mentally ill, infirm, or criminal. And we don't want to hand over much to charity, or to research, or for defending ourselves, or for cleaning the streets (remember Council Tax is only a small proportion of local council budgets).

Besides, £500 for a video card puts you in a range of luxury spend where a decent chunk of tax is entirely justified. :-)

I would also like to see how much tax an individual would have to pay before they become a net contributor to the state. It would be very tricky to calculate, but I think it could be bracketed at least.

Didn't VAT go from 15% to 17.5% to pay for the Poll Tax fiasco, what a surprise it never went down again ;)

I'm a 40% tax payer and I don't calculate how much tax I'm paying when I'm buying stuff because it just too depressing!

There's no set amount for that though, as your individual circumstances dictate how much you get back from the state.

Working tax credit, number of children etc etc

IIRC it's only about 25% of the tax payers who are net contributors though (citation needed)

I have a fair few friends who work in the medical sector, My auntie and uncle included who have also worked in other parts of Europe and they themselves have said England has some of the worst conditions for the sick, Disabled, Mentally ill so our money isn't getting very well spent in those sectors which really annoyes me when it should be.

Where I live on the wirral peninsular, An estimated £600 million gets collected every year in council tax alone, Yet the services are badly sub par, And half of that goes to the police which I maybe see 1 wobbling down the road once a month if lucky.
Who's pockets is this cash getting sucked into ???

So you want to earn some money? Sure go ahead buddy, that'll be at least 23% please. Now you want somewhere to live? Here's a bill for £1,500 a year taken from the money that we've already taxed you on. Want to buy some items for your new lodgings? That's going to cost you another 20% my good man, and if you want to collect these items in your car, well, just bend over and brace yourself.

I'm sure it could be banded though. A bit like they do for estimating the impact of the budget on people. Though you would have to assume that all other state revenue was distributed proportionally to the size of each departments budget. I think it would be a useful bit of information. I'm so tired of hearing people moaning about how they pay their taxes and they therefore deserve better. When in fact most people are net recipients regardless of the tax they pay.

In which case, can I have £10 out of eveyones pockets that pays 40% tax. They won't mind, it's only £10. I suspect I won't get many offers :)

Charity begins at home. I'd sooner give the money to family. Nice try though. :)

However as a 40%'er you have the buying power and thus less need to agonise over the cost of items (and the tax on them)

Unless you are buying very expensive items you don't tend to pay that much VAT compared to income. Relax and enjoy the nice things. That's what I do. Worrying about tax isn't something that concerns me (I'd worry more if I wasn't PAYE but then I'd have a good accountant) :D

Q: Why is tax so high.

a) government and government employees are greedy
b) too many people expect a free lunch
c) government and government employees like spending other people's money
d) all of the above

I still think VAT is a poor name for it. Sales tax is better. There is no value added by VAT.
