Why is tax so high ?

Amazon and Google aren't doing anything wrong, the Government need to change the TAX law to make what they're doing illegal!!

But the politicians all have Amazon and Google shares.

That's why I don't expect the laws to change any time soon ;)

To be honest international tax law is a whole cats cradle of unintended consequences waiting to happen, that said it needs to catch up with the Internet age.

I was about to buy a GTX 780 and noticed without VAT it is £100 cheaper, Come on, £100, Seriously ?
Anyone else agree this is a little much to shove on top, I know it's a luxury item but wow.
We bought two new cars last year, our VAT costs were £7,800 (after both being taxed at 40%).

If you want the products then you pay the tax - simple :)

or pay their builder cash-in-hand etc.

We're not back to the "if you pay people in cash you're a dirty tax dodger because it's your fault they don't do their taxes" thing again are we.
I'll pay in whichever way I like and not give it a 2nd thought, if they then don't declare it that's their problem not mine.

Yes its hilarious how all our waste gets collected and taken away for us on a weekly basis

Cool for you..

Fortnight here and I try to recycle everything, but no where to put cardboard etc, I'm always going the local tip as the bin is always over full.

Biggest con with VAT.. it's added on to fuel after duty, and that one eyed idiot Mcgordan brown conned us with 15% VAT and increasing duty to compensate than waking the VAT back on it.

I'd much rather Amazon and Google pay little if any tax in the UK. The government will only waste it on human rights and bureaucracy.

The extra overhead will just be passed straight onto consumers and prices are higher than the USA excluding VAT already.

When you consider what we get for our tax e.g.

People coming round to pick up our rubbish from our houses
A national network of roads and rail
A police force who sometimes protect us from criminals
An army to go off and fight to defend us anywhere in the world
Schools and teachers to educate our kids
... and many, many other things, tax actually seems quite cheap.

Tax is high because our education system is staggeringly poorly thought through. Spend all the money on the stupid kids? Yeah, that's cunning.

The majority of the population is consequently a nasty combination of thick and uneducated. Consequently innumerate. See the current apprentice series for a tragic example of one of our leading lights failing to do 17/2 in his head.

We then have democracy, which we're very proud of, which amounts to asking the uneducated majority what we should do next. Control is partially delegated to local councils, who seem to be comprised solely of the kids who spent their youth shoving pencils up their noses and dribbling on the floor.

Thus, we have a ridiculously inefficient country. We must therefore pay lots and lots of tax.

Somewhat bitter about this :(

Waste lots and lots of waste. I wouldn't actually mind paying more tax, if we got something for it. But we seem to be on the upper half of the scale but get less bang for buck.
Scandinavian countries have higher tax but seem to get far more at the same time.

Either we need to cut tax and services or spend it properly ATM we just seem to waste it.
