*** The Official Samsung Galaxy S4 Thread ***

Just charging my S4 (really excited, been using an S1 for 2 1/2 years). Anything thats recommended to do / install?

Is it a screen protector needed? Never scratched my S1 screen and I didn't use one.

Getting a weird issue when trying to update any apps. Every one says there's an error, 'update for xxxx could not be downloaded due to an error. (Error while retrieving information from server. [RPC:S-5:AEC-0])

Any ideas? Tried it at home and at my parents. Have also rebooted the phone. Stock Samsung firmware, no roots or anything.

Lots of threads on XDA, Google that code.

@Nexus The Liquid Armour video was quite amusing, he got really excited when he started scratching it off the screen. TBH I think it's a mission if you want to remove it from the screen, meaning that you literally have to scratch it off for the phone to be as it was when you first bought it. I prefer just applying a SP and taking it off without no hassle if I don't need it anymore. Interesting concept though and a decent alternative I suppose.

Interesting that the on screen buttons won't show on the S4 and even more useful if it can be turned on or off. That will be very handy, don't know how having just two buttons on the HO will work though, unless HTC enable the logo via a kernel mod?

Shame you can only get the HOS S4 version only through ebay or gumtree, if I were to buy it again I rather get it from Handtec or Clove just for peace of mind.

I hardly play games on my phones and if I do it's only 2D ones like Jetpack Joyride and Ski Safari which hardly take up any memory which is useful. I have an attention span of a goldfish :o and can't be bothered playing time consuming games like GTA, but it works for me because as a consequence I have a fair bit of memory to play with, plus I have a 64GB micro sd card where all the media goes. :)

I don't think you're ready to give up your HOS Mate, so the phones will probably be redundant in your hands too! :p;)

@El1te Thanks Mate, all good in the end :) Think I'll hold off flashing Wanam until some other ROMs show up (im waiting for Ripper ROM) as that was an awesome experience on the S3 and Deluxe Settings / Vertimus to get started so I can get the Holo theme across the S4. Still Wanam's a good ROM though and am somewhat tempted, am also looking into Omega as a viable alternative :)

Am glad you're liking the Neo Hybrid, it's an awesome case that protects the S4 fully and still retains the slim look and feel without compromising any thickness.

I've taken a look at the pictures you posted on the S4 accessories thread and the pictures look good! I also see that you have gone for the slate blue version, you have great taste! :)

@kona I hear you Dude, I was extremely happy with my S3 LTE set up, it was fast, fluid and more importantly stable and it looked good ;)

So I know where you're coming from, in fact if I still had my S3 I probably wouldn't have bought the S4!

You get the best of both worlds, S3 for rough use and the S4 being used very carefully for special occasions

Yep, great news in the end for the refund, as I didn't have to send the phone back although the hassle of setting it up again was a pain in the bum :(

Can't knock Amazon in the end as they came through! :)

That is Linus for you! :D

It hasn't been confirmed that yet.....I doubt it though and by the looks of the one GE, looks like it was false :p

HTC have answered questions about that and said the button setup will be the same as the current one, however, not sure about the menu button etc. as that needs to be done via software so google will have to do it, not HTC since they are handling the software side of things.

Unfortunately, I might be getting rid of the one s sooner than later :(, don't know if you have been following the one S thread lately, but a well trusted source has more or less said, that there is a high possibility that sense V5 won't be coming to the S (despite HTC saying after the one announcement that it will be coming to the S.........) and if it does expect a huge wait time.......

So I am currently strongly considering swapping my S for my friends nexus 4 for the time being.........

But I suppose that I might as well wait for the X phone and see what it offers and if it doesn't impress me then it seems like I will have no choice but just to probably get a GS 4 (if I want a good camera and SAMOLED screen) and root and flash a custom ROM *sigh*

Seems that is the only way to get good long term support with android phones, the update area is so bad that it actually sometimes makes me want to abandon android all together and move to an iphone!

Needless to say that if that does turn out to be true about the one S and updates then I am done with HTC for good till they prove that they can provide long term support!

Quick question, is there anything I need to do on the s4 regarding long messages? On my Dad's S2, whenever he sends a long text message over 140 characters he is billed for it as an MMS as apparently anything over 140 is sent as a picture message? Something I've not had on my ip4, so just curious if anyone can shed some light on it or anything I need to change before I start using the phone?

Linus...haha that's funny such an apt name for an excitable chap. Was expecting him to fall off his motorbike at one point but he was going too slow :(

So we'll have to see what Google do with the HO in terms of the buttons then? Maybe it'll be a pleasant surprise but at least the dreaded 3 dot menu will be banished forever and HO owners can get their real estate back screen wise ;)

Dude I saw your pictures in the HOS thread and they are incredible, I've never seen such quality pictures being taken by a camera phone before, they're breathtaking. It just goes to show you how great the HOS camera is but a lot depends on the user themselves and how they take pictures, give me the HOS and I'll make the camera look decidedly mediocre in my hands :o:p

Yes that chap on Twitter is eerily right with his info and almost all of them come true. If it ends up happening then it's a shame, if Samsung can still support the S2 with JB then why can't HTC do the same? Surely a year old phone can handle Sense 5 and all the improvements it brings along with it? If Samsung can work wonders with supporting their old devices then why can't HTC? Shame that...

Dude swapping your HOS for the Nexus 4 isn't advisable, you will wring your hands with the poor camera, it's shocking...especially coming from the quality of the HOS camera. The difference is quite literally night and day...also the UI with the stock camera is very sparse and a far cry from the Sense camera.

I'd say wait for the X phone, I can't believe that you're contemplating moving over to the S4, which will your only Samsung branded phone since buying the Samsung Soul U800 right?

So judging by what you're saying even the M4 is out of the question? No more HTC products for you anymore? I can see what you're saying and agree about supporting a company that only bring a handful of software updates to a phone. Samsung are good in that respect, they're still supporting the S2 and will be bringing several features from the S4 to the S3. The S3 only just got a
"value pack" software upgrade, I can't see HTC or Sony doing that.

I doubt you'd move away from Android to Iphone...you don't support Apple's ethics or practices :p

Best thing to circumvent the update process is to either buy a Nexus device or "Nexus experience " device and get the latest updates. :)

Mine just sends multiple texts, but then so did my S2 so not sure!

There's a setting that you can check which warns you when it turns to MMS mode.

@stoosh

Indeed! TBH, I should really subscribe to him cause I do like his videos! haha :D I loved how the camera man had to run after him :D

Possibly but then they won't be able to access the menu for certain apps :o :p

Thanks :) hehe :D Got to thank lightroom for most of it though :p

Most definitely especially since the XL (which is the exact same except for the screen and a few other things) will be getting it. Extremely annoyed and have even sent an email of telling them how disappointed I will be if that is true (better to do it now than in 5 months time), no reply back........

I know :( That is the only thing stopping me from making the switch..... I could live with the UI and limited features (just do them all via apps and lightroom etc.)

Last Samsung phone was the galaxy spica :o Ruined by Samsung's software optimisation but made 100 times better via the community at samdroid

Unfortunately it seems the only "complete" phone for my standards, main reason being because I would want to root and put a custom ROM etc. on to get rid of the horrible out of the box experience, HTC devices just aren't as easy to root etc. and as said if that turns out to be true, well I don't want to give HTC any more of my money, as said many times before, I hate supporting companies that don't provide good customer support via software etc. why support them when they do that, it just shows they have no interest in the customers and instead just want to force people to buy their newer phones.

Yup, no update released in a timely manner for the S then no more HTC phones till they prove that they are good for long term support. Samsung and pretty much all other companies aren't any better with their phones either but at least with Samsung devices they are easy + quick to root and have a great choice of stuff to flash etc. plus the only phone along with the HTC one that meets my requirements so far. Unfortunately if you want good long term support, you literally only have the choice of Samsung and HTC's flagship phone :(

True :p But at least they get the main stuff right i.e.

- don't saturate the market with loads of slightly different phones
- only one phone a year
- great support for updates/software
- great customer service

:(

Yup, have always wanted a nexus device purely for that reason, guaranteed updates and to get them quickly but the hardware has always lacked in comparison to the other flagships and I use to be a huge fan of stock android, but these days I prefer the custom skins of sense and touchwiz (although not the colour scheme and layout of apps etc.) due to the extra features etc.

There's a setting that you can check which warns you when it turns to MMS mode.

Or just install a third party app like Handcent or GoSms which negates long texts being converted into mms.

I don't think I've ever used the stock sms app on any of my android phones except way back on my G1.

Been using go sms for a while now

Be warned though Tim. The current go sms is quite bloated and their constant little bubble notifications are annoying.

I'm using an old 4.39 version.

Shouldn't be too long for more roms to come out. I feel that it's been ages but in reality it's just been over one month the phone has been out lol. I'll expect some perfect AOSP roms to pop up end up june or so, will be giving one of those a try just for the sake of it really. I could put an unofficial CM on right now but it'd bug me knowing it aint complete so that will have to wait.

Yep loving the Neo Hybrid; metal slate was the only choice, blends nicely with the black s4! I've ordered a slim armor for about $8 too as I'm curious how it is. I know a few people including yourself weren't too happy with it but for that price I'm willing to give it a try; I find it hard to stick to one case for a long period :(
