Non traditional board games

my favourite was chineese detective game and trivial pursuit and UBI I never even til this day figured out how to play lol

Those were the good days of FAMILY gaming.

Yeah, it was the first game we grabbed at the Expo, being big fans of Forbidden Island. Haven't had a chance to play it yet, but poking around, it looks very high quality. :)

Popped into Spirt Games (spiritgames.co.uk) in Burton on Trent to see their new store and Forbidden Desert was on the shelf. Instant purchase. Like you, I haven't played it yet but the components look great.

The Monty Python version is a lot of fun. Not a game for the serious board game geek though!

Monty Python Fluxx is the best Fluxx. 'Tis only a scratch...

Not a true board game, but I played Articulate the other day and it was great fun. Would have snapped it up immediately but it's £30 . It's just a piece of card and a bunch of cards, how can they charge that much?!!

Play this every year at Christmas, great fun when there is 8 of you.

Played Forbidden Desert with my bother this afternoon. Love it. Takes the Forbidden Island concept and just improves on it. New mechanics really work well. We died of thirst - twice. The second time I was on the launch pad waiting for my bro to bring the other parts for the airship and a Sun Beats Down card killed me. Bummer. :D

Going to be playing forbidden Island this weekend, along with tigris and euphrates.

Didn't know about forbidden desert. How's the difficulty compare when the number of players are upped?

Not played it with more than two players yet. However, unlike Forbidden Island the storm marker (akin to the water level marker in FI) has different settings for different numbers of players.

However, sand hasn't been an issue (other than blocking routes across the board) - we died both times due to the (new) water mechanic. Both times thirst killed us. Also finding the parts for the airship is different, harder, than how you got treasures in Forbidden Island.

It's a really good game. Similar theme to FI but harder with new mechanics.

I mentioend the program Vassal a few pages ago, and have suddenly come down with an itching to play something deep and play by email with it. For those who don't know, or are too lazy to find my post, Vassal is a java engine that lets people play board games. They generally contain everything that is needed to play, though they can be fiddly to work out how exactly they work, and are occasionally tempromental (I tried playing Carcassonne with a friend and the auto-score system was a little crash happy so we simply kept manual score instead, not an issue at all.
Depending on the module, the games can require the players to do everything themselves, whereas others automate a lot of it. Also, any Fantasy Flight Games will have some cards blanked out as a method of 'copy protection', meaning that players have to own a copy of the game to play it completely. However, as long as one player has a copy of the game then they can edit the vassal module (It is essentually a fancy zip file) and replace the censored cards with the non-censored version. Just obviously these can't be hosted on the official Vassal website.

Anyway! Anyone fancy a PBEM game of anything? I'm open to pretty much anything, though would be interested in giving Twilight Struggle (2 player) a go, of for something with more players, how about Blood Bowl: Team Manager (2-6 players) a go? Its a card drafting sorta game. Rules for both games can be found online with a quick google search, or I can help explain. (BB:TM is also FFG, so I can help with that if there is desire to play)

Of course, there are lots of other modules available for play as well!

Just played Dungeon Lords, very good fun though a touch daunting at first! Sort of like a board game version of Dungeon Keeper.

Given its popularity, does ticket to ride count as a non traditional boardgame?

Simple concept, quick turns. Nice filler game.

I'd say that if it isn't published by Waddingtons or Hasbro then its probably a non-traditional board game XD

Years ago I got a copy of lord of the rings board game so the gf and I opened it and played it for the first time.

First problem, the first scenario board was in Spanish but a quick Google search found us a translation via a forum where people where playing.

The rules could have been written better but we finally cracked them and it was not a terrible game, quite nice to play a coop game if I am honest.

I was playing as fro do and she was Sam, in true Sam wise style she selflessly sacrificed herself so I could continue on, I died the next turn, we didn't even make it onto the last board.

Sorry this was a rushed review but I am writing it on my tablet(sorry for probable bad spelling) if anyone is interested I could write up a more thorough review tomorrow.

But yeah in short we enjoyed playing it and are looking for other games to play, any suggestions?

Played Forbidden Island today on Elite difficulty (4 players). Lost all 3 games in a row.

I have trouble beating that game on normal. :( :D As for Forbidden Desert...well don't get me started on that!

Introduced some friends to Tsuro and Formula D this weekend :D

Not a massive fan of Formula D but love Tsuro. Need to get round to picking up Tsuro of the seas...

can you pros recommend more games like Settlers of Catan, resources building stuff etc.

Powergrid as recommended above. Agricola, Stone Age, Snowdonia. Lords of Waterdeep is a good one. Easy to play like Catan too.

I used to LOVE Atlantis when I was a kid. Munching up ships and Atlanteans with sea monsters and sharks!

I bought it at a boot sale the other day for £2 and played it with just two players. My god, it is bloody rubbish.

Received King of Tokyo as a wedding present. Not had chance to play yet, but looking forward to doing so.

So I had a few rounds of this at the weekend with my wife. Personally I think it needs to be a 3+ game as the 2 player is a little bland. Furthermore it seems far easier to smash people of their 10 HP rather than trying to accumulate 20 VP.

Would be interested to hear from people that have played the game quite a bit for your thoughts on it.
