Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Lol, just "upgraded" from a Mediasmart EX495 running WHS v1 to a Microserver N54l running Server 2012 Essentials last night, took ages as I was having to play hard drive musical chairs while I disassembled the pool on the EX and assembled the pool and system mirror on the N54l, it's interesting to note the differences between the two machines.

What have you noticed so far?

I was tempted with going the 2012 route but the price is putting me off at the moment so going to attempt a 2011 build.

Hey guys im really tempted with the cashback offer. Where have you lot found it going for less than £90?

Can't mention competitors on Overclockers but if you check hukd (I think I'm allowed to mention this, please delete if not) a UK deals website in the UK for N54L or MicroServer then you'll find loads of options.

Before I pull the trigger on this, does non-ECC RAM work fine with the Microserver?

Yes

Non-ECC

ECC-Unregistered

A mix of both although it'll disable the Error Checkin in the ECC

No

ECC-Registered

In case this helps anyone else...

Last night I successfully installed a stick of "Kingston Technology KTH-PL313E/4G 4GB DDR3 PC3-10600" alongside the 2GB stick that comes with the server. I have the 4GB stick in slot 0 and the 2GB stick in slot 1.

Thanks, that does help as I wondering if I could do exactly that with mine :)

I find if its only got 1 drive or the unit uses 5400rpm drives then its pretty silent but other than that I get terrible humming noise. I just use mine with a external 2.5" drive as my CCTV system and have moved the drives into a server system.
