Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Yeah, I did debate putting that one in or or to use one of the silly 'rainforest' charades terms but didn't really see them as direct competitors, they are mainly enterprise box shifters, different market i think.

OcUK sell servers. I'd remove it.

You got access to the members market on here? I managed to pick up 2 x 2TB WD Blacks for almost £35 cheaper than anywhere else, brand spankers!

I have WD Black in my main desktop, but I would not recommend them for a microserver... Black is performance oriented and higher on energy use.

Just got the N54L, I'm looking to stick 16Gb in it. I want it to be compatible but don't want to pay the earth for it. Anyone have any recommendations on what to get. It's only to facilitate running VM's on it

Cheers,

I'm also looking to try 16GB in the latest one I've bought.

There is a list of part No's at: http://n40l.wikia.com/wiki/Memory that includes some 16GB kit numbers. Reading around, it seems YMMV as to whether 16GB will work but seems most N54's work ok.

Anyone got a 16GB ECC kit No they have had working ok in their own machine?

Further to my post above, looking around more, I've seen ESXi bundles for the N54L that include 16GB of the following memory: KVR1333D3E9SK2/16G

Fair to assume then if looking for 16GB of ECC then that kit # is compatible.

Cheers,

I have read on a few forums that the Crucial Ballistix Sport RAM works and it is on this week only (Ending tonight) for £80.

What kind of power do these use compared to Synology or QNAP multi bay NAS devices?

I'm looking to centralise my media and know one of the above NAS's would be perfect but I can't ignore the value for money of the Microserver.

I've just bought one to replace my old qnap with two disks in it. Doing some googling I've seen people quoting 30-40w idle with 2 disks not spun down, and up to 60w idle with 4 disks spinning.

My qnap 209 uses around 30w idle with 2 disks not spun down, but qnap spec the newer ones at about 5w less. I think the types of disks you buy makes quite a difference on the power consumption.

My N54L is being delivered this week, can anyone tell me if the following will fit?
Your basket
Product Name Qty Price Line Total
Asus HD 6450 SILENT EDITION 1024MB GDDR3 Low Profile PCI-Express Graphics Card £29.99
(£24.99) £29.99
(£24.99)
Creative Sound Blaster 5.1 VX Sound Card - OEM (30SB107100000) £11.99
(£9.99) £11.99
(£9.99)

I'll be using Windows Server 2012 as it's free for students.

Also I currently have 2 x 2TB drives in my Qnap TS-210 that I'll want to relocate. They're currently mirrored and ext 4, what's the best way to go about it?

Cheers
