I was using my new 3TB HDD in my new PC build to test my OC, now that i have everything setup i have place in my SSD drivers from my old PC and run windows 7 install and told windows to delete/format all data from my 3TB and proceed to install windows on 1 of my SSD drives. I have now noticed that this new 3TB has 3 partitions, 1 is a 'System Reserved' and the other 2 are 'Unallocated'. Now i know i need to convert this 3TB into a GPT disk, but i appear to be unable to do this because of this 'System reserved' partition on the drive.....

Is there away i can delete or more this System reserved partition to another drive so i can convert this 3TB is GPT disk??

I think its down to having the 3tb connected while you installed windows onto the ssd

if you did delete it it might mess up the boot record

could try formatting the 3tb drive in another pc othwerwise im not sure how to do it other than re install windows to the ssd with no other drives attached then add in and format the 3tb to gpt

Damn it i wanted to avoid that, but i guess thats the only way. Even if i take the 3TB drive out windows wont boot as i have removed the drive with the System reserved partiton on. Oh well

yeah it messes the boot up,windows installs something on the other drives so it best disconnect them all while keeping the drive in your installing windows on plugged in

can try with just the ssd and boot from windows dvd disc and do a startup repair, might take two or three tries to fix it

If you go to their webpage http://www.acronis.co.uk/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ you can get a trial for 30 days ;)

When you create a disk backup you can select what disks you would like to back up. I would select your OS and system reserved (Just encase it does not go to plan!!) once backed up to a network location or removable drive or something.

Go into the menus of true image and you will find somewhere create a bootable CD create and burn one of them.

reboot the system and boot from the CD go into recover from a backup and find your backup. You should have 3 tick boxes
System reserved
Master boot record
OS

Tick masterboot and system reserved and then select where you want to recover them too (your SSD i asume)

This is the problem im not entirely sure if you need free unpartitioned space to do this so you might have to shrink your partition on your SSD for your OS about 500mb to be able to do this.

It will then recover once you go through the wizzard and then reboot, at this point dissconnect your 3TB hard drive and see if it will boot without it connected. If it does thats all too it :)

If it doesnt boot i would sugest formatting your SSD and recovering all three system reserved MBR and OS to it that should do the trick.

Once your happy that it boots fine and programs and everything are working just go ahead and format your 3TB hard drive :)

Tried the System repair option but didnt work, just unplugged all drives bar my windows SSD and reinstall windows, as you suggested. Glad i didnt have too many program installed. Thanks for the info

Looks like i was a bit late replying, But i'll post the info anyway.

If you delete the system reserved (Or unplug the drive and delete after this process to be a little more safer) and then boot from a Windows disc. You can run a few Bootrec commands to fix it:

Bootrec /Fixboot
Bootrec /Fixmbr

We have to do it fairly regularly at work and it hasn't failed (Touch wood)
