Road Cycling Essentials

Honestly? Not sure. In terms of car terminology, I'd at most be greenlaning rather than hardcore offroading, if that makes sense. I bet that the most of its life would be mud tracks rather than bouncing down a hillside for example.

It's all a bit pie in the sky as it would be my first proper bike, so I have good intentions but not a huge grasp on reality yet!

I use this for greenlaning (or white the day this picture was taken);

For all intents and purposes its a road bike with relatively chunky tyres (35mm wide) and it does the job fine. You don't need suspension other than the tyres.

Yikes!
Just got a start list for my race this sunday. Riders from Raleigh GAC, MG Maxifuel, Hope Factory racing and also eXist's boss, who happens to be the scottish national champion.
I knew it would be a strong field but i didnt realise it would be this tough. I'll be lucky not to get dropped in the neutralised zone. :(

Haha it is a pretty solid field. Lots of strong guys in there as you said. My boss is riding it too.

Greig Brown and Stephen Lawley are both strong as **** but don't seem to do so well at races. Peter Murdochs been going quite well it seems too.

Good luck :P

Those of you who cycle every day, what do you eat for breakfast?

I had some cereal at 7ish, rode to work and now I'm sat at my desk thinking about going to the canteen for a sasuage cob. So hungry!

I have nothing before I set off, apart from a pint of water (I'd rather have the extra 5-10mins in bed). I then have a bowl of porridge when I arrive at work.

Nothing before I set off, full stomach before the commute makes me feel uncomfortable.

When I get to work it's usually coffee and pastries. My body is a temple, see.

When I was doing longer commutes (c200 miles a week) then I'd have porridge and pastries and Friday was death by pig:

That looks awesome. I've just had a sausage cob from the canteen here, don't want to do that every day though.

I will have to look at having some cereal at work and eat when I arrive.

Saturday is about the only OK day this week in the SW. Probably do the club run first ride since last Sat, I'm done with long distances :p. And the R5 went into secure storage yesterday until I move at the end of the month. So Ti only for next few weeks.

Doing the L2B route with a mate this Saturday. It's looking to be a nicer day than Sunday and the roads won't be clogged with 27,000 nodders doing the BHF charity ride.:D

Anyone local is welcome to join, leaving from Clapham Common around 7am.

Might be doing similar if I have time. Is the roundtrip realistic in 8 hours?

I recently did L2B and back in under 6h moving time. However, my mate has to be back for the afternoon so we were planning on getting the train back.

That's pretty rapid. Once you're out of London is the only major hill the one coming into Brighton? Do you go out via Gatwick sort of way? I've done that bit of the route twice recently and really enjoyed it, we head east at Gatwick and go over Toys Hill and back via Crystal Palace for a nice loop. Although I snapped a spoke at the start of the descent after Toys Hill and had to limp to the train station.

We're going to do the traditional route for the charity ride which is basically the first half of this loop but starting at Clapham Common.

The only notable hills are Turners Hill and Ditchling Beacon just outside Brighton.
