Windows 7 or 8 for new desktop?

I've had my PC up and running for probably less than a day so far.

I've had more crashes to blue screen so far that I have had collectively on Windows 7, really not very happy with Windows 8.

While it feels quick and I like some of the features, I'm so disappointed to have crashes all the time.

I bet its something like drivers are the cause, take me for example I installed latest Nvidia 320.18s and it gave me more lockups and games crashing then I ever had in the last two years(well done Nvidia lol),removed the crappy 320.18s went back to 314.22s and all is great on Win8 even in gaming, plenty of threads on that too like this one from Geforce.com https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/544882/geforce-drivers/official-nvidia-320-18-whql-display-driver-feedback-thread-released-5-23-13-/63/ so avoid using 320.18s.

Memtest doesn't seem to be doing anything right now, it's at 42% Pass and Test is at 77%, however it has found 8360 errors so far.

huh?

I'll be buying a new copy of Windows (which Overclockers will install for me on the system), I just can not make my mind up between which one.

How have people got along with Windows 8 as a desktop?

My Dad uses it on his work laptop and has been really impressed with it.

The lionshare of the advice that you are going to get on here is that 'Hey, Windows 8 is really cool when you get used it', or the more moderate replies will tell you, "if the Metro UI really gets on your **** then there are lots of unofficial 3rd party apps you can install to get a start button on the desktop".

I will tell you however, that if you are not operating a tablet or other touchscreen device, steer clear of Windows 8. Aside from the absolutely retarded layout of practically everything, such as; app screens that like to impose themselves on you offering no back back button; desktop not as a 'shell' but as an 'app', which means if you are into gaming, then that will make the likes of Steam an app within an app etc....the list really does go on and on. Windows 8 at this time, suffers from a very high level of bugs and issues. I suffered one app crash too many last night, from which there was no recovery except for a shutdown and restart.....and then get this; often Windows 8 would reboot, loading up the same crashed program in its same frozen state.....I mean...seriously GTF outta here!

I have now gotten rid of Windows 8, have installed Windows 7 (whilst upgrading from W7 to W8 is a piece of cake, someone somewhere has ensured going in the opposite direction is a real run around the table), and save for a DX12 release being exclusive to some future Metro based W9 or something, I cant see myself going back to it or anything like it.

The likelihood is, that you are going to go with Windows 8, because:

a) it is modern
b) everyone is telling you 'it is actually pretty good'.

But I am finding that the consensus of W8 on tech forums does not correlate with what most people I know in the real world seem to think of it. You have been warned.

EDIT: Sorry, I posted this without reading the second page of the thread. So, as I 'predicted', you went with W8, and just as I did, you are having serious issues with it that go way beyond being annoyed with the retarded touchscreen system. Although you have now unfortunately paid for Win8, I am sure you are resourceful enough to get a fully operational copy of Windows 7 installed on your PC, cost free.

When you turn it on it'll say something like press delet/f1/esc to entre bios. Then depends which motherboard you have but just have a look around, then chnage it from manual to what ever your ram says.

Posted the RMA'd memory back to Overclockers today. Fingers crossed they find a fault too and I can get it sorted :).

It's happens,think I've had faulty video card,PSU explode,faulty memory,faulty HD and motherboard over the years,nothing is RMA proof ;) .

Just going to add my bit in here.

W8 is nothing different from W7 besides a few tweaks which have made it faster + whatever else functionality, and the fact it doesn't have a start menu. I can't believe there is still this hatred for it for no reason!

MatTheCat: Apps are the same as shortcuts, they're the same size, do the same thing, and are easier to find with the store being there, how can that be a bad thing?

Windows 8 crashed and had issues when I first got it installed, but it was my SSD with the wrong firmware. The OS is solid, people really need to stop jumping on the hatred band wagon, especially when it's Windows 7 with a new UI.

- New RAM should fix your problems.

TheReaperGuy, I hope it's just the RAM :), although I'm going to probably spam and ask for help finding up to date drivers for things when I get it sorted.

I don't mind the lack of a start menu, I use Apple products for everything except my gaming PC, it was just the constant crashes and generally being unable to do anything with the system in the initial 24 hours.

The only thing I've ever RMA'd before was a AGP graphics card from a long time ago with Overclockers, the products they sell have always been faultless up until now, but I don't blame anyone for the problem, it's just one of those things. I just hope it's all sorted quickly :).

Now that I have Win 7 on this laptop, I can see that many of the problems were indeed to do with the pre-installed bloat/software and drivers that the laptop came with.

The Killer Network card really lives up to its name in that it kills the net. The only way that I van get a good reliable connection is to uninstall the drivers and the USB 3 is just as faulty under Windows 7 as it was under Windows 8.

Quite frankly shocking stuff from MSI on + £2000 laptop. I really don't want to have to RMA another laptop, as I just want a good gaming laptop that works, but unless fixes jump out the bush and fast, that is what will be happening with this laptop.....again.

No matter what the outcome is, I shall be using Windows 7, not Windows 8. If Windows 8 is just Windows 7 with a new UI, then I say 'no thanks' to the new UI.

its a bit more than that, but if you don't like the UI then the benefits probably aren't enough to justify the swap, windows 7 is still a very good OS.

out of interest does anyone know if the downgrade rights apply to bought copy's of windows 8 or is it only oem machines.
