Is Game of Thrones worth watching?

I am making sure I am a book ahead of the series but be careful because season 3 finishes halfway through A storm of swords: Part 2 (4th book.)

Eh? Storm of swords is one book. Season 3 is doing the first half of it, and season 4 will be the second half, which bits from which halves they cover is a bit of a mix.

Also there is a large element from the fifth book in season 3. I also assume season 5 and/or 6 will be a mixture of books 4 and 5. Hopefully by that time book 6 will be out but I doubt the final 7th book will be out in time for a natural TV progression. HBO won't be able to spin a load of new plots in the meantime so I wouldn't be surprised if HBO finish off all the main story arcs themselves, Martin is supposed to have told the produces the main endings.

I've been meaning to get into it, but from what I've heard it's all incest and sex o_O

Nah, there is a bit of sex to cater for the brain dead morons being forced to watch it by their better halves but the majority of the gratitude the series receives is from the complex character driven plot lines.

Last week I watched ALL of seasons 1 to 3 of Game of Thrones. Heard some good recommendations and several people shocked at season 3 climax, so thought I'd give it a go.

The series have several story arcs at once. in short, some are pretty wordy with little happening, whilst other ones are very good and keep you interested. Overall it did just about enough to keep me interested, will probably keep watching. I did find the identification of some of the male characters confusing though, when several of them all look similar and it jumps from one place to another.

Good series overall, would recommend doing season one and seeing if you like it or not.

Some of the story arcs are quite diverse and interlinked, I'll hold my hand up and say I've had to revisit some episodes so as not to lose the plot so to speak. But some of the wordy bits are every bit as entertaining as the faster paced stuff.

Yeah I've done the same now and then, or a quick wiki check to see who's in what family or who's loyal to who.

I'm sorry to say that pretty much every other fantasy book series you read after a Song of Ice and Fire will seem childish and linear, with cliche ridden one dimensional characters. Such is the strength of Martin's work.

Strange - I found the books very formulaic and cliched. The sex scenes were also embarrassingly nerdy. I gave up about a quarter of the way into the second book. I haven't seen the TV show yet, but I'm definitely going to give it a shot.

I've just watched the first two episodes with the girlfriend. Really good so far, think I'll carry on with it.

She now wants one of them dogs though!

I couldn't get in to it after 1 show couldn't understand what all the fuss was about but you need to give it a chance and stick with it as it's actually bloody brilliant.

Warning though it's very addictive you just have to know what happens next, best show since the sopranos imo.

High production values very well acted filmed and directed just top notch all round really.

How long till it picks up?

Perhaps read a little more. Book 3 is immense.

I can't believe that as a straight male I am going to say this, but the sex scenes and near constant nudity are unnecessary and detract somewhat from the experience.

But you should still watch and read. Fantastic series in either format.

edit: I am also quite suspicious that OP created this thread in the hopes of provoking some sort of debate instead of genuinely asking for opinion.

I'd agree with that, some scenes were almost irrelevant and just background. That said series 3 has been more restrained. I don't mind it being graphic, likewise the violence. But when it becomes throw away it detracts from the story rather than adding to it. I suspect it did draw viewers in and generated a talking point.

Agreed with all points there lol

Yeah sexy scenes were pretty cheesy. Glad they have almost gone now
