Like Team Fortress 2? ;)

I was thinking the same thing. Valve are always criticised for taking valve time to release things and then they are proven right by the results.

That's a bit different though, TF2 was announced in 1998, 9 years before its release whereas the has been no official word on HL3 has the?

Also TF2 is a bit of an irregularity in vaporware anyway, not just because it got made, but because of the product cycle, TF2 was originally in development as a Quake mod before valve got involved and after that happened the developers put it on ice to remake Team Fortress using the HL1 engine (Team Fortress Classic) then went back to it making TF2 again using the HL1 engine before eventually scrapping that and going with the HL2 engine (and a qwerky graphics style), so all the work on TF2 done prior to 2002/2003 never got used.

Its unlikely HL3 can follow TF2's development time frame as it isn't a mod for itself so isn't linked to its own engines development in that way.

HD textures I can get behind, honestly the game never really looked that great, however the Cinematic mod is almost vulgar in the way it goes about it. Again I liken it to that part of the Skyrim modding community who thinks good graphics means looking at the world through a film-grain filter at shiny trees you can't see because of terrible DoF and lens-flare of all things.

Subtlety is always the best option.

I just have the original models in the game (They seem to get a HD texture pack anyway) and keep the rest, i see it as a big improvement.

They are definitely building up to something. However wouldn't be surprised if it's just the summer sale lol. Tired of these types of things, as they are always such a let down when it turns out to be something with no connection to HL3. We keep building ourselves up for the inevitable let down! :p

It would appear that much of the work on HL:Ep3 that was done after Ep2 cannot or will not be used in the final product either at this stage. Hl3 also appears to have been put on ice for a while too. In fact, the more I think about it, the more similar to TF2 it is. Also, after all of the rampaging abuse they got over TF2 (remember before it was released?) so maybe this time they're not announcing it that far in advance.

They actually finished the game years ago, they've been planning the ARG in the mean time and won't release the game until it's done.

The thing thats always annoyed me the most is that Valve made a big thing about the trilogy of HL2 episodes being episodic and cutting down on the release time. They made good on that promise for the first two parts and then just stopped dead.

If they decided to go in a different direction for the last part, why couldn't they have come out and said that? Maybe not at first, but surely after this long they could have told us something? At the rate things are going Half Life 3 could end up becoming the next Duke Nukem Forever.

If its going to be announced, it will be in a big way. There hasn't been any big events planned for tomorrow, so if they do announce anything, it will probably be a summer sale.

If HL3 is going to be released any time soon, it will probably be tied in with the launch of the steam box. But who knows how valve time operates.
