Road Cycling Essentials

Right. Manchester Piccadilly to Media City. City centre, so you may find shortcuts depending on your own personal feelings about, you know, one way signs and the like. Google Maps cycling directions offers some interesting ideas as well, which you may want to consider working in - little cobbled sections might liven things up, for example.

I think I'd probably go for something like this. You could substitute Whitworth Street for Portland Street on the first half of the journey, but it's a faff getting onto Whitworth Street from Piccaddilly unless you fancy doing a u-turn to get onto it or going down to Fairfield Street and getting across to Whitworth that way. Either way I'd recommend picking up Liverpool Road once you cross the A56 and heading across the bridge and down the little cycle path at the end to Middlewood Street and Liverpool Street. You could use the A57 instead of Liverpool Street, but the A57 is busy dual carriage way and Liverpool Street isn't. Both have cycle paths for at least part of the routes, though. The junction to get from the A6042 onto the A57 is pretty silly though, and while there are cycle paths to get across it, you could end up waiting a fair bit of time for the pelican crossings.

Well, I hope that helps you a bit...

Brilliant. Someone had mentioned Princes Bridge to me and I was looking at a very similar route to that one. Since I'll be on the Brompton I might just walk it over to Whitworth and start there.

I usually get a cab too and from the ariport (but have to get the train now) so I've seen folks cycling the A57 and it looks OK, but only issue is that some of the roundabouts and junctions look a nightmare.

Cheers for the help.

Yeh I was looking at that udderly smooth one yesterday, seems to be good from the reviews.

I might have to give it ago as I'm doing a lot of cycling at the moment, and it's just annoying to get in the saddle a bit sore to start with.

Cheers chaps

I've found the Assos one lasts a bit better than Udderly Smooth but it contains menthol which is supposed to have a "cooling" effect that takes a bit of getting used to. Think Original Source shower gel.

The Assos stuff is about twice as good as the Udderly stuff. So like for like the price of both is about right. The Assos creame is the best stuff for long rides going hard, but I do use the Udderly stuff for training. Problem with the Assos is that its expensive you tend to scrimp on how much you put on where as with Udderly it gets slapped on.

I slap it on every ride, even for commutes. Given that skin abrasions/rashes get worse the longer they go on its an important daily ritual :).

Also as above, the Assos one feels great :p.

Don't feel the need to go into too much detail, but where does this stuff go? Just all over and around your bits and pieces?

I've got some udderly smooth cream, and Assos skin repair on order.

Hopefully it does the job!

And this might be a stupid question, but do you apply the cream to the short padding? Or to your nether regions themselves?

I've read both at the moment, so wasn't sure if there was a proper way of doing it effectively, or whether it's just personal preference.

I smother it over the pad of my shorts mostly around the 'nose' of the pad and then just wait for it to squelch when I sit on my bike, yummy.

By the bye, we've had a few people complaining about not being able to find the red triban 3 from Decathlon online. I was in the Warrington store last night (picking up some clothes - decent bibs and jersey for £35 for anyone needing some good starter kit) and they had half a dozen or so red triban 3s in there. So if you can't find one online, it might be worth calling your nearest store and asking what they've got.

Guy I know who did the same ride as me on Sunday (only quicker) rode to work and back yesterday. I could barely climb the stairs to the office.

Managed to cycle in this morning but wasn't a fast one.

I would have just bought the assos creame tbh. Skin repair just use Sudocreme and keep your bits aired.

I have a tub of udderly smooth. IIRC, it says on the tub to rub a bit into the chamois after washing your shorts and also to avoid your tackle when applying pre-ride.

Seriously, what shorts/bibs are you guys wearing? Do you really need these cream?

Mind you, the longest ride I've done is only 37miles, so not in the cream required range yet I suppose. I find my shorts and material ample for protection - be it from chaffing or saddle sore...
