I'VE DONE IT! I'VE DONE MY FIRST 50 MILER! Actually, I'VE DONE MY FIRST METRIC CENTURY! http://app.strava.com/activities/64882266

Was out with the whole intention of riding up to York Race Course and back, working out to be about 50 miles. My lovely missus was suppose to be at home till I'm home, but decided she needed to go in to work early and conveniently took my house keys. Had to put in an extra effort, climbing up a 'little' hill which nearly killed me after over 55 mile ride.

Got home in the end. Now for a cold water soak!

Good work! I did my first metric century back in March. It wasn't too bad, but I was tired after.

I think I might slot in another 4 miles somewhere along the way on my ride this Sunday to take me to a bona fide 100...

I went out to do this segment: http://app.strava.com/segments/1223397

Just noticed an epic fail. I wasn't sure exactly where the S/F was and pulled in when I thought I was passed it but just realised I pulled in short of the finish, stopped for a couple of minutes then rolled past the Finish oof! Should be able to take a couple of minutes of my time next try though:

I'm always doing that. This segment near us is a sod, because it's really hard work for the first half, then it levels off and there's a nice viewpoint where you can stop and have a breather... Except the other half is just around the corner and you're nowhere close to finishing the segment.

Our lot usually do it in two parts, but last time I did it I made it all the way up, following one other lad, and then nearly died at the top waiting for everyone else, who didn't even make it in the end - they sent one envoy to tell us they were turning round and we were welcome to do the longer loop we were aiming for on our own!

They should show up in your rides.
When you have uploaded something and you go into the details of it, scroll down and there will be a list of all the segments that you covered on that ride.

(you can also use the explore tab at the top to see a map of segments but ti shows everything so obviously you wont have a time on every segment.)

They don't - I get my position as -/n. Even though my time is good enough to be in the top ten on some sections. Do rides have to be public?

I used to hate that hill but now that I've got all the gear changes and whatnot mapped in my head it's not so bad.

Foxholes is now my 'oh god, not again' hill. Even The Rake is relatively straightforward. It's tough, and then super tough. That's it. You don't have a constantly varying gradient, potholes and turns to negotiate.

I've resigned myself to knowing that climbing Mow Cop is going to absolutely suck on Sun. This heat is going to kill me. I had a dry throat just riding home from work today...

Looking like 21c for my ride on Sunday. Can only get a small bottle in my second cage on my bike. There's supposed to be water at every feed station, so that's every 25 miles at least. Should be ok.

I can't believe how flat that ride is, I'd love to be able to knock out a ride that far with that elevation. My 6 miles back from work has 250ft of climbing lol.

Nice work though!

Aye - to my East, it's flat. The hardest part is the wind because it's that flat. To my West is the next challenge of undulating climb and fall. Somewhere to ride for Rapha Rising.

This route isn't easy for keeping speed up though, the Selby to York ride was mostly on cycle route and I've never seen so many dogs, runners and cyclist on a path about a metre wide.

Whoa, just looked at the Strava readout - 718 feet in 66 miles!

That's less than 11 feet per mile! I average 4 times that round here.

I wonder if different app gives different read out?

So, it's obvious that all elevation is not created equal but this is ridiculous:
Stage 3 TdF:
Thomas de Gendt - iPhone: 17,973 feet!!! http://app.strava.com/activities/64310496
Laurens ten Dam - Forerunner 210: 14,862 feet!! http://app.strava.com/activities/64282368
Roy Jeremy - Garmin 500: 7,493 feet http://app.strava.com/activities/64198958
Marco Milano - Garmin 510: 7,956 http://app.strava.com/activities/64110049

I am using my Windows Phone 8 for all my loggings. I get different readings of speed and elevation when compared to my manager's when we do the same ride, despite us being wheel to wheel. He uses a Garmin 200.

Maybe my elevation is under-recorded? :P

Surely the height of the road is mapped, why use the gps locaton for it? Just get the x and y and the map will tell you the height..

What map would that be?

I've posted about this before, when Damien and I did the exact same ride and got different readings for climbing and the heights of the hills we'd been up. Basically elevation is hard to measure, either by GPS itself or by using a barometric sensor, and elevation maps like you're talking about don't really exist. Strava has elevation data for a lot of points on the roads, but who's to say how accurate it is? Given that even your line up a particular hill will affect the profile you face, it can only ever be so accurate.

You could try mapping the route on ridewithgps and seeing what it says.

Winner!

Took the win in C-Grade today, 37km with 500m climb. It was really windy, I didn't warm up that much but we had a big bunch so sat on the back for the first 5km then moved towards the front. Got to the bottom of the CAT3 and people started looking at each other and the pace slowed.

I attacked off the left after a little crest, so nobody could get an easy tow out the wind and would have to drive their own path. Got a small gap before it steepened up.

I had a look half way up and had perhaps 45 seconds, it kicks up really steep at the top so gained more time there. First over the top, had one rider not too far behind but couldn't tell who it was, thought it was a B grader who had been dropped.

After 5km I wasn't pulling away, realised it was the guy who I was in the team time trial with last week, he's been doing some sneaky training and can pull hard on the flats. I slowed up as I knew I would need the help for the next 15km as it was almost all into a big headwind. We took turns, the chasing group was maybe 500m back in a group of 6 or so but didn't gain any time on us. I was giving it all on my turns to stay away, I always seem to lose out in a bunch sprint and wouldn't be very fresh after being away for so long.

We didn't really contest the sprint, I put a small effort in just incase, got over the line first, then had a sit down for the next 5 minutes.....

Average HR of 177 over 75 minutes with a max of 195! :o

For the hour I was away averaged 180 bpm!
