lol tvlicensing

TBH rough areas are safer when it's dark and all the teenagers aren't hanging around smoking weed and making trouble the only people I see late at night is people walking home after they have been clubbing some of them look rough as hell but so far no one has said a word to me , sucked there teeth at me or tried to rob me.

To be honest I doubt you're really an attractive target for a thief. Someone successful/quite well off carrying a laptop bag and unlikely to cause a fuss would be though. It's perfectly normal for staff to be protected in this way, especially if they are carrying confidential information. You walking back from the off licence with a large bottle of WKD is hardly the same thing.

I made the simple point that the OP has made at least 20 of the 156 (as then) posts in his own thread but cannot and will not spend 5 minutes taking the time to let the TVL people that he's not a target of theirs.

You clearly don't get this.

It's an awful lot more than 5mins if you think about it.

They will then contact you asking to come around to confirm this. They'll likely do this and post notes under the door saying they've called and to contact them to schedule in for another time. You then have to go out your way to sort this out, let them snoop around your house when they are nothing but some goon employed by a private company, with no right to come in just like a debt collector, charity chugger or random tramp off the street. Then they'll start the process all over again in a few years or if you decide to buy another tv and give over your details to the store.... But you bought another tv, you must be a baddy illegal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or just ignore their letters like all the other spam you receive.

I actually enjoy messing with tv license people. I hope they take me to court as I want to sue them for wasting my time. £150 per hour is my rate and travel expenses. I want full reimbursement. I will also counter sue for harassment and distress with unspecified damages.

I refuse to join their database, I don't agree that they have the right to search my home just because i refuse to communicate with them. They have no evidence that I own or watch a television.

well sometimes I ride around on a £600 bike with over £100 worth of accessories on it when I'm bored and it's late if I can't sleep I'll do a few laps around the block.
check the crime map for ne4 5hw ;)
just because I'm in a poor area does not make me poor.

I've lived in poor areas all of my life and this is the nicest one so far I guess if you have never lived in a rough area they seem a lot more scary than they really are.

But do they really have escorts? It seems a bit OTT I know most night clubs provide a free taxi for the staff if it's late at night.

Nobody from TVL came round to check our place when I told them I didn't need one. The letters stopped and that was the end of it.

But if you aren't in, they will likely just keep trying so its not like you are having to go out of your way really.

I'd also point out that your details aren't given over to TV Licensing when buying a TV these days, so that is completely wrong.

Ultimately though, you could just carry on ignoring the letters.

I can see how it must be something of a pain if you really don't own a TV. But if you are simply deliberately not paying, then you will just have to accept that you are always going to get hassled on it, which is always going to happen unless you are paying for it.

LOL at those letters, got a more recent picture for my personal collection of LOL folder? Oh they're ridiculous.

That is the latest amount that has accrued (Under 5 years worth at this current address), less around 7 Special Delivery they sent that I did not go to the Post Office to sign for, they did get me once with that trick though but even then I did not sign for it when I saw what it was and left it there, now I just ignore any unsolicited Special Deliveries.

LMAO that's a nice collection.

You will when you answer the door and have to talk to one of these chumps. An annoying hassle to say the least, should you be in.

You are asked to give details when you buy a set.... Not that you have to give your own details ;)

But the source was from a live broadcast (typically), which is what they say matters. Technically how different is it to recordings? Which according to the licensing terms you require a licence to watch.

That brings up the question of how they look at people watching recordings that they didn't make themselves, for example family members recording shows on to dvd for you.

Not that it really matters, the license is a farce anyway, and personally wouldn't pay it whether I watched broadcast TV or not.

no they don't say that

they're failry clear about it on their website and recorded broadcasts on iplayer, 4OD etc.. are fine

Under the communications act 2003.

If a "justice of the peace" is satisfied by information on oath that there are reasonable grounds for believing—

1)
a) that I have a television and that I don't have a license for it.
b) that evidence of the commission of the offence is likely to be on premises. ie That there is a TV on the premises.
c) that one or more conditions in sub section 3 is satisfied.

(3)Those conditions are—
(a)that there is no person entitled to grant entry to the premises or vehicle with whom it is practicable to communicate;
(b)that there is no person entitled to grant access to the evidence with whom it is practicable to communicate;
(c)that entry to the premises or vehicle will not be granted unless a warrant is produced;
(d)that the purpose of the search may be frustrated or seriously prejudiced unless the search is carried out by a person who secures entry immediately upon arriving at the premises or vehicle.

Having a tv antennae or a satellite dish on your house is enough to satisfy 1) a).
Having the word likely in b) opens it up to subjective opinion. Likely based on what? based on how popular TV is, based on the opinion of the individual requesting the warrant?

Section 3 justifies a warrant if you don't answer the door or if you refuse to communicate. If you open the door and say you don't have a tv and they still want to search your home and you refuse, they can still request a warrant because the guy thinks it is "likely" that you might have a tv.

A dish or antennae does not satisfy "reasonable grounds" under 1a and 1b but a "justice of the peace" will accept it as reasonable grounds anyway.

The legislation is written in such a way that means every house in the UK will be searched for a television, even if the people deny that they have a television and there is no reasonable grounds to satisfy 1a or 1b. Not allowing them to search your home, even after you have denied having a television is still enough to satisfy one or more conditions in section 3.

But no where in the legislation does it say anything about giving the bbc your name. Giving the BBC your name, if you do not have a TV, is optional. It is meant to be for the benefit of the person, so that they do not get harassed by the BBC again and again.

Yes they do, otherwise you could just record it yourself and watch it a few hours/days later.

The source of the content on iPlayer, 4OD and so on isn't the initial broadcast.

Same. I told them I didn't need one either, and that was the end of it.

For the sake of 5 minutes, and the opportunity to save both parties' future time and effot, just bloody tell them so.

Well this "ring them up and sort it out" is complete bullcrap.I rang them before and had my name added to the list and was promised i would be moved off the list for two years.

A year later more letters about court and the same letter as OP got.Believe me or not there is no SKY dish or antennae in my home yet im being given threatening letters about court etc? I think its harassment and i would have thought that the law stats innocent until proven guilty. This has been going on now for over two years and i have still to recieve one single visit or phone call.

So why do they not send someone out to look in the window rather than abusive letters? Does this break any EU law about privacy or human rights? I would love to do them in court over it.They think everyone in the UK owes them £149 for more strictly come dancing i dont think so everything on TV is complete crap and i have zero interest in it.

If the TV licence people ever come to your door never give them your name or agree that you are the person they are looking for.....they cant do anything without that agreement of who you are........or start filmimng them...there are funny youtube clips.

The licence is a joke..they need to bring in advertising or if you dont pay the fee then dont watch crappy BBC channels

no they don't...
go read the website and link to the bit you're referring to - watching 4OD etc.. (as long as not live) is fine

it is watching or recording TV as its being broadcast which requires a license

Here's a crazy idea... why not just pay for a TV license like you should?

You need to be covered by a valid TV Licence if you watch or record TV as it's being broadcast. This includes the use of devices such as a computer, laptop, mobile phone or DVD/video recorder.
