We're looking at getting a new car within the next few weeks - is it worth holding off until the 1 September for a 63 plate or will it not make much of a difference to its value if and when it comes to selling it?

13 is unlucky, think about that. They changed the whole Irish plate system because they were afraid sales would drop with the number 13 on it.

Well, the dealership have one car in stock that was ordered as a test drive/dealership car but hasn't been registered yet so we could potentially get that whenever we wanted (if we reserve it). But yes, any others are on a 4-6 week waiting list/lead time.

Only reason for the rush is that our current car is in the garage with engine problems and looks as though it may not be financially viable to fix and/or put to a reliable enough state for me to use on some upcoming requirements, which would require me to hire a car.

Yes it will be worth more. The car trade is still archaic in that used values fluctuate on a monthly basis. When your car is valued, one of the options to choose is the reg plate of the car i.e. is it a "13 plate" or a "63 plate" and the 63 plate will be a slightly higher than the 13 plate even if they are separated by a mere day...

Ordinarily I'd agree too. We're actually looking at the Kia Sportage (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18528711) and there's very few of the current models about second hand; 20 within 40 miles on Autotrader. Of these with the spec and colour we're looking at we would only be saving about up to £2,000 max which vs buying direct w/ discounted servicing etc doesn't seem worth it.

The new car is also a treat for my girlfriend's new job that we'd had in our mind we'd invest in once that happened so again £2,000 for it to have 0 instead of 20,000 miles is an amount we're willing to indulge in.

But appreciate the advice and like I said I'd normally agree :p

A brand new Kia?

Are you mad? Yes, yes, I know, Kia's are decent these days but a brand new one is financial suicide - especially given how long the warranty is on them, pretty much any recent Kia is a guarantee of no-repair-bills.

20 within 40 miles sounds like a huge selection to me! Last time I bought a car there was 1 within 400 miles :p

If the saving really is only £2k then I'd be tempted to agree with you but are you comparing used sticker price with negotiated discounted new price? Thats not very apples v apples.

Nope, comparing sticker to sticker. Brand new Sportage 2 CRDi is £20,795.

There's actually only two white ones within 60 miles, and they're both new. If we go to 100 miles then there's a whopping... five! http://www.autotrader.co.uk/search/...lt/colour/white/maximum-age/up_to_3_years_old

I know you might think we're being picky with white but actually it's the only free colour and the rest are a bit meh.

Ignoring the colour the cheapest second hand Sportage 2 is £16,000 for an 11 plate with 29,000 miles. Probably is just about worth it but as I'm sure everyone here knows, that 'peeling the plastic off a new monitor' feeling is priceless :p.

It's not £4k priceless :p But they do seem to be holding their value (relatively).

A lot of dealers will try and delay your delivery into a 63 plate anyway. I'd say you're best waiting, a car registered on 1st Sept 2013 will likely have a bit more value than one registered on the 30th August 2013 if you're trading it in to a dealer. They rarely look at date of registration, just the plate age.
Remember, you're best buying towards the end of the month for the best dealers on new cars - but it would need to be delivered that month.

I doubt you have much choice, it will be on a 63 by the time it turns up anyway.

Plenty of places will have plenty of stock they can put out on a 13.
