A few months back, someone posted that the PS3 was out selling the 360 and a few of us (myself included) brought up that the 360 sales number are inflated due to the RROD and that I would love to see the number of actual active consoles rather that the sales numbers.

Any hows, without making this a console war or a fanboy thread, I tripped over a report done by an insurance company based in America and it makes for some VERY interesting reading.

Its a very good report, going into details of the failures and the timescales of the fault. Interesting if your a nerd like me. lol
 
Can only speak for myself as I've had both consoles from their launch days and I've sent back two Xbox 360's and three Playstation 3's (2x Originals, 1x Slim.)

The only statistics that matter are the ones that happen to you personally, in this case, I had 5 failures across both machines. That's not enough to put me off, never has in the past (3x PS1 failures, 1x PS2 failure) and I was there picking a PS3 up day one (and am getting a PS4 day one too.)
 
I'm on my Third xbox,second ps3 and still use my original launch day wii for regualr mario kart online sessions.
I've never had a Nintendo console fail yet.
 
I drew the line at 11 360's, didn't bother replacing the last one that died. (RRoD and drive bearings going)

Currently on my 3rd PS3. (BD-Rom replacement under warrranty and hardware died)

I think since launch I've had 2 RROD, but this was in the years before they "fixed" the issues. The 2008/9 phat elite that I only recently sold was always perfect for me, and got a lot of use.
 
I think I had 3 Xbox 360 failures since launch. My launch console died twice (fixed once, then got a refurb the next time), and my Elite died once as well. My PS3 hasn't died at all, but then again considering how little I've actually used it, that's no surprise.
 
Original 360 RRoD, fixed and has been fine since. Still got original phat PS3 never skipped a beat. And I have an Elite and a PS3 slim which I've never had problems with.
 
I've got three 360 shaped door stops in my spare room still have my day 1 PS3 which has been repaired once but still works.
 
2 x 360 failures here but I bought them from that Good shop that just gives you a new/refurb one & both times I got a new one so it worked out well for me.
PS3/PS2 No failures at all.

I don't own either console now & haven't for ages so you can stick that fanboy **** up your ****. :p
 
My launch day 360 died after 4 years. I bought an full fat Elite which is still going strong now.

There must have been massive differences in production quality for there to have been as much variation in reliability.

Played them... I think Dead Rising managed to take out 4 of them, or they just happened to die while I was playing it.

That figure is from launch, I gave up on them almost 2 years ago now. Stuck with my PS3 Slim after my Phat 40gig died.
 
so when looking at the chart, the thing the console's fail on the most other than the rrod or ylod is disc read failure which ps3 seems a lot higher. these kind of things can be swung to make either console look good or bad. to be honest I don't think if a console breaks its the end of the world. what I do think is important is that the manufacter actualy covers the failure of the console. as an xbox owner I think Microsoft have been realy good admitting the rrod and covering it for 3 years of the console life. admittedly I don't know what sony does for ylod as I only seen people on this forum complain about it and I have never owned a ps3.
 
My 1998 n64 still works as well as the day I was given it for christmas. I am ashamed no other console has lasted that long...

Thats a rough failure rate of one every 6 months :eek: were you playing them in a greenhouse inside a weed plant room in the middle of an egytian heatwave or something? :D

I had a problem with my xbox as soon as I got it, so didn't technical fail as I don't think it ever worked. Replaced the next day and has been going strong for about 5 and half years now :) *touches all the wood I can find*

I had a Mega Drive from the very early 90s that still worked fine the last time I tried it a few months ago. I guess the more powerful and technical consoles get, the more chance they have of overheating or breaking.
 
This is why im avoiding launch consoles, wasn't the 360 assembled by people that didn't know they had to take the plastic cover off the bottom of the heatsink?
