*** The Official Samsung Galaxy S4 Thread ***

If anyone is into custom ROMs check out ProBAM 4.4.1. My god is it quick, smooth and great on battery. Literally the best of several ROMs. Was religiously using Pacman ROM but thought I'd give Probam a go and so happy I did, was so easy to migrate across even from a fresh install.

How are people managing to make it a full day on battery? Either I have a faulty phone or the battery life is appalling. I'm getting 9-11 hours before I hit the 5% point where the phone renders itself useless.
My 'normal' usage is a little (1hr) music via headphones or car, a couple of youtube videos and up to 1hr basic surfing, 2 or 3 short (10 min) phone calls, and a handful (20 - 30) sms/whatsapp messages. Oh and a few photos of my baby daughter. I'd maybe receive a few emails etc during the day but generally don't write emails from my phone.
Coming from an iPhone 5 I've not changed my usage trends and I'd easily have 40/50% battery left after all of that.

I've tried custom roms (wanamlite, google edition, CM10 etc), stock/adam/ktoonsez/ausdim kernels. Nothing has really made it any better.
I'm currently running ausdim kernel using the recommended power saving settings, I've undervolted the CPU and am running Greenify donate version to hibernate lots of apps. Everything samsung/touchwiz is frozen via Titanium, I literally have no running apps in the background. BetterBatteryStats reports very very few wakelocks/alarms etc, but my battery life is just shocking.
All the 'smart' features disabled, NFC etc is off, screen brightness is set to the stupidly-dim auto setting, I've no animated wallpapers or widgets. All sounds are off, haptic feedback is off, all motion features etc are off.

Honestly with the phone so neutered to get an extra 20 mins battery life it hardly seems worth it. Being unable to use that brilliant screen at any sort of respectable brightness level is making the phone a chore to use.

Help, S4/android experts. I really want to like this phone and not go back to the iPhone. So much so that I'm considering one of those god-awful extended batteries that make the phone look like a 1999 Nokia :(

Below is my best day so far on battery. 10am off charge to 10pm dead:

It's funny, I googles the NLP thing causing partial wakelock and came across this thread where a guy has very similar use to you but says his phone lasting so long is insane.

You do have quite high usage, 3½ hours screen time is going to burn battery, this isn't a small iPhone screen we're dealing with now. You have brightness on auto, try turning it off and just setting it to 30%.

I would also not use whatever Dropbox auto sync you're using. Even just 8mins of partial wake lock could be quite intensive if it's uploading/downloading.

Myself I get the best battery life of any phone I've had. I'll go a 15 hour day and have 60-70% battery left, but then my screen on time is only around an hour.

Maybe this will have some tips for you?

guys, anyone on the google edition rom know how to set a different lockscreen wallpaper?

i.e. different from the home screen

Any one have a solution to this rather annoying bug? It has plagued me across multiple Android devices. If I try and send an email through Gmail with picture attachments of any size apart from something very small, it won't get out of the Outbox. This occurs on WiFi and 3G. I just tried one with a 67KB file, worked fine. But anything from a 1/2MB wont.

Are you in a bright environment? Is the phone signal weak in your area?

I agree your getting quite low usage compared to me. 4 hrs in one day should be easy.

And your screenshots are gigantic - pls resize.

Same reasons as you and most others really, it's just a better phone overall (for things that matter to me at least), and I rather like the design etc.

It is pretty sleek:

As before but made the bottom icons transparent and a different clock.

A load of invisible stuff on the homescreen - folder, circle launcher, apps, gestures, lock widget.

When are you getting it?

Does anyone know how to stop the S4 from alerting me to Junk Emails from Hotmail? I've had a look through the settings but cannot see an obvious setting. If I get alerted to another email about adding a few inches or getting cash for gold I'm going to throw the phone in a meat grinder!

i still cant decide between this and the HTC One. Is there any definative reason that would sway it? although i have read the S4 doesnt have FM radio?

Nor does the One does it?

cant go through 240+ pages but what does this phone have over the HTC ONE as im getting one or the other and cant make my mind up.

although half of the people i know with the S4 have a broken screen already

- Expandable Storage (Up to 64GB)
- Better Camera (Not much between them however)
- Slightly faster processor

If you're going to keep a touchwiz rom then you have all the gimmicky features like Air View/ Air Gestures etc, also the array of camera modes such as HDR/Drama Shot and animated photos.

The above +

- RGB Notification LED (lots of colours vs only 2 on HTC), much bigger and clearer too
- SAMOLED over LCD (preference)
- Bigger screen + less bezel
- Super quick 2hr charge vs 3+hrs on the HTC One, 10W VS 5W.
- Much easier to Root, and it doesn't wipe the device.
- Built in Barometer (Temperature+humidity+Altitude)
- Upgradeable battery, Bigger capacity.
