I find it as backwords as the DLVA or someone assuming I have a car and threatening to take me to court for driving without a license , not owning a car with insurance, no mot or road tax......

Just ignore it, they phrase the letters deceptively, you wont be taken to court unless you do something dumb. The above link shows what they've sent a guy for the past 7 years.

- They cant enter your home (unless you let them in)
- There arent many employees anyway so its not likely one will visit
- They cant just take you to court unless you let them in and they see you watching tv without a license, or trick you into signing a confession
- They dont have a clue what you are doing in your home with your TV, the vans are just for scares

So if anyone comes to the door just tell them to F-off.

Also why bother filling in the form to stop the letters? Might as well waste this sham companies time, costs you nothing :)
 
When we bought the plot of land (where my house now sits), we wanted to knock down the existing building and build new. The previous tenant had a TV Licence.

Within months of owning the land I found TV licensing letters that had been "delivered" to the plot, basically calling me scum for not paying*

I called them up once it was apparent that the letters were not going to stop, and calmly explained that we had no TV, indeed no house at the address as it was in construction. The chap on the phone demanded that I pay the licensing fee (:confused: ) and threatened to send an inspector around to check the situation.

My reply was.. "if you can find a house at this address, go ahead". Eventually got them to believe my *story* and they suspended the letters for 6 months whilst we continued building the house :rolleyes:

* - I say delivered because the postman had simply left letters under stones or building materials.

Remind me though, do you not still need a license if you are only watching iPlayer for instance? Or just DVDs? On a television I mean

If you are watching something live on Iplayer you need a license. If you watch it delayed then no licensed is needed. There is a little bit of a gray area of what delayed means. Generally speaking 1 hour is enough. DVD no need to licence.

For example watching Doctor Who when it comes out on Iplayer license needed. Watching Doctor who 1 hour later or 1 day later no license needed.
 
Only downside of delayed viewing is that you may be subject to major spoilers on social media sites.. 'OMG DOCTOR WHO DIES OMG' :p

Not sure if it has already been mentioned but from now (iirc) if you buy anything to do with TV such as a TV, TV card for a PC, Freeview box etc, you DO NOT have to fill in that form retailers give you when you buy it. This was brought up in a meeting at work. I work for Morrisons.

Edit: On a side note I have just filled in the no need for the licence form on the website. It took 30 seconds and didn't need anything apart from an email address and my house address. Thats it. All done and dusted. Easy.

Hi there. I am not 100% sure but I will have a look and see what I can find. I am not at work today so can't ask my Gm about it. All she said was to the Checkout Operators is that the forms are no longer needed.

From what I can make out it is now (or could be from now as the report/assessment is from 2012) that it allows retailers the option to not bother with the forms as its cost them to collate and send them off each month and thus prevents any burden on said retailer and can possibly create jobs with the money saved.

So I guess Morrisons has decided to scrap the forms thing.

Thats quite funny considering Morrisons illegally detained me for buying a dvd player a while back. The stupid till tart couldn't distinguish between actual law and company policy.:rolleyes:

How about the death penalty with an on the spot summary execution, that'll sort the buggers out, because as we all know you just need harsher sentencing to stop crime, right? ;)

I was just reading that, it's on front page of today's Telegraph.

Jist of the article was that more than 180,000 people were taken to court last year for TV License 'offences', with 155,000 convicted.
Magistrates did 1.48 million cases total, so that 180,000 for TV Licenses is just over one in ten magistrate cases :eek:.
Interesting that TV License gets you a criminal record but non-payment of utility bills and parking tickets etc are civil matters.

Lord Pearson (UKIP leader in the House of Lords): “It is outrageous that so many people are brought in to the criminal justice system through this means. I believe that non payment should be treated in the way that parking tickets are. It is absurd that the courts are being clogged up by such a minor offence.”

Conservative MP Steve Barclay: “It is interesting to look at these figures against the backdrop of the recent vast pay offs made to BBC executives. The average pay-off was in excess of £164,000, with some executives getting more than £1 million in severance deals. Meanwhile you have hard working people being taken to court and given criminal records for non payment of their licence fee.”

In 2010, Charles Moore, the former editor of The Daily Telegraph was ordered to pay £807 in fines and costs after refusing to pay his television licence on a point of principle.
Mr Moore had accused the BBC of a “gross violation of its charter”, by broadcasting obscene phone calls made by Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand to the former Fawlty Towers actor Andrew Sachs.
He informed the TV Licensing Authority of his intention not to pay his licence until the BBC terminated the contract of Jonathan Ross, who at the time was one of the Corporation’s most highly paid stars.​

It's not different it's a tax, it is not a parking fine.mthat is a stupid statement.

Not everyone has to pay council tax either or NI etc.

Got a letter saying I had not replied to their correspondence and that they would send people round and so on. It was the first letter from them I had received as I had just bought the property and it was a repo.


I rang them today as I'm doing it up and therefore don't have a TV nor intend to watch one there. Got licence at home anyway.


Spoke to a really nice guy. Asked for a few details. I explained the situation quoting my reference. Within five minutes he said its fine and that there will be no more letters for 6 months and to ignore any that come through. And just ring them to update in another 6.


Easiest thing in the world. Didn't even cost me as 0300 is included in my minutes.

Don't see what the big deal is. If people who didn't need it just told them it would save them and you letters and time and also mean people who are abusing the system are caught quicker.
