Mixing SSD and mechanical drives

OK as it stands right now i have my system set up with dual boot, Win 7 x64 on C (WDC WD 6400AAKS) and a D drive (WDC WD 7501AALS) both are WD Black mechanical drives, now over the next few months i'd like to replace the 2 OS drives with the newer SSD drives, i don't need these drives to be that big as i try to keep my drives as clean as possible, for example my C drive only has basic apps like AV/malware/burning software etc just the basic to get me out of trouble if my main D drive goes down (C has 50GB on it, and D drive has 70GB on it).

Money is not great so i suspect i'll be replacing them one at a time, is that a good idea or should i hold of longer and buy both at same time, I am happy to pay a bit more for some decent kit with a decent warranty, I do love my WD stuff but i think i'm out of luck with them as there 128GB drive came in at a stupid price.

Also will they work OK with my main board it's an older Asus p5e3 premium wifi-ap @n, and finally any good place to start reading about SSD's as i know some are great yet some are also pants and the last thing i want to do is buy crap.

What would be your overall budget? We can plan around that.

There's no problem using an SSD and a HDD together. Many do it, including myself.

The SSD will work on your motherboard, there's no problem there. It just won't get its full throughput but SSDs are all about access times, rather than purely for read/write speeds.

Hi guys thanks for the replies Idartalis I don't have any massive apps the OS is the biggest thing by far, no massive games or anything like that, so i will be putting OS and ALL my apps on the SSD's (basic apps on c & on d will be the drive i use 99% of the time so will have a bit more on it), also like it this way as when i clone my drives it's much easier.

TheMadDutchDude I have no real idea on budget to be honest, of course i want to spend as little as poss but at the same time i won't buy **** for my OS drives, if i work on the basis of 128GB is best for my needs (correct me if i'm wrong) I guess anywhere between £100-£200, i don't know if it will matter much but i do have a couple of raid cards in the machine which may better to run the OS drives from.

The cards are an Asus U3S6 http://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/U3S6 plus an Adaptec 1430SA http://www.adaptec.com/en-us/support/sata/sataii/aar-1430sa I'd have to check manuals to see if the Asus will allow booting from something tells me it won't.

I'd love a drive that did come with a decent warranty something like 5 years would be cool.

Why use words like this?

Like what? It makes perfect sense to me that i don't want to waste money but at the same time I do want decent fast (well as fast as i can get with my old motherboard) and reliable drives for the OS side of things.

Hakanese I can't warrant the 250GB as i don't need that much space, i'm looking at pro then for the warranty, if you had to choose between the Plextor M5 Pro 128GB Extreme Series and the Samsung 128GB SSD 840 PRO what would you (and others) choose and why?

The 120gb range does feel kinda small by itself.. I mean thats essentially the OS, your core applications (not to mention if you use office suites), then your games... particularly any which have expansions/addons.. you'll be lucky to cram 5 on it give or take a few gbs of breathing space

I go with that size drive as primary with the above stuff on it, but only a couple online games which I know I'm unlikely to uninstall/reinstall on a whim

Everything else (including "offline" games) I run off the secondry HDD.. bearing in mind I have a large chunk of GOG's catelogue (not to mention stuff like steam) so I'm waiting for the bigger SSD's to become more accessable before jumping that hurdle :)

Which is actually quite frightening as I've probably spent less than £50 on pc games this year.. I'm a bit frugal these days though i only buy during 75% discounts and the like

You can probably just use a 120gb Single SSD like i do....

OS win7 + essential apps leaves about 60gb for me... I have 3 or 4 games i play al the time Civ5 and a shooter Blops2 + an MMO SWTOR.

You really don't need more for a gaming-browsing PC.

Id get a large 2nd HDD 2TB for everything else. maybe even 2 x 2TB as i like to keep back ups of everything these days. thats still only about 120 quid for both of those.

im not thinking of upgrading over 120gb on my desktop until 500gb ones are 100 quid.. which wont be too long... year or 2.

also i wouldnt worry about the Sata 3 card. Run it in Sata2 as is... It will still blow the mechanical drives out of the water.

You can put that money towards the next CPE/Mobo upgrade.... With onboard Sata3 and usb3
