*** The Official Samsung Galaxy S4 Thread ***

My home button clicks quite loudly recently, it's really starting to annoy me! It clicks slightly before you actually press the button fully, which is even more annoying!

Apart from that I'm still loving my S4! Just treated it to a fresh screen protector :)

Mine did this, although this was after spilling hot chocolate all over it :D

I did fix it though, Arcticlean and a cotton bud all round the button :)

found out what was using all my battery , Gmail refreshing in the background all the time, disabled It and now its lasted a full 24 hours with 30% battery left :)

Pretty much the Google edition ROM for the reasons that Matt said. It's stable and takes away all the crap. You can get good guides by Google search, but all I can add is that I used Odin 1.85, rather than the Android developer tool. The techno buffalo one is clear and links too all required files for root and ROM change. I can help if you get stuck, 1h max if you take your time and go steady like I did. Can be done in 10 mins though.

Foxhound is the closest ROM available [as possibly Wanam which i dislike] to stock S4 rom.

Install the "Slim" version of the rom and it does not install any of the bloatware. You can always download any Samsung stuff later if you need to through the Over The Air Update. Its themed like Stock Android too.

Foxhound + Nova Launcher + Widget Locker = no TW!

There is no hint of TW on my phone because i hate it!

Google Edition Rom sounds like what you need. I've tried it and it is BASIC. So basic that i got rid of it after a day. Its fast but that's because its basic. The good thing about it is that the camera is still great unlike any of the AOSP roms.

If you want to keep as many of the S4 features then you want a TW based rom such as Fox Hound or Wanam. These retain the features of the S4 but remove the bloatware. Fox Hound is leading the charge with lots of updates but Wanam is dragging its heals in recent months.

Cheers guys, did a bit of looking around, still completely mind ******* with all the different kinds of ROMs, but from what i have read Google Edition and FH seem to be pretty popular.
So this morning i decided to bit the bullit and get on with it.
I tryed the Google edition. not quite as easy as i first thought it would be, it was all a bit trial and error, but got there in the end, now running Google Edition ROM on JB 4.3.
ok so it took pretty much a whole day to get running but i reckon i could quite easily go ahead and install another in 15-20 minutes now that i know what i'm doing.

Not possible AFAIK.

Since buying my DSLR ~9 months back I have relegated my phone cam to snapshots of info I need, and quick pics of my nephews and nieces looking cute. The DSLR comes out when I want great snaps though I was never interested in snaps of landscapes or buildings. Mostly events with friends and family, cars and gadgets :D

That's what I thought. What use is using Camera RAW settings in photoshop then?

Reason to open jpeg in Camera Raw format in PS:

This will give you all the same non-destructive photo adjustments that you have available for processing raw files-- white balance, exposure, fill light, brightness, contrast, sharpening, noise reduction, red eye removal, straightening, and so on.

When you open a jpeg the normal way and edit and then save there is loss of quality because jpeg compresses but when you do it via camera raw there is no loss of quality.

fixed my audio issue. Tried KT kernel but that made no difference so i installed the viper4Android audio DSP on the off chance as i know it gave me good results before on TW roms...... Bass. Lots of lovely bass :D

No problem. That pretty much matches my experience. First root/ROM on SGS2 = most of a day, second one on SGS4 was about an hour and a half, but I had an unexpected problem with drivers and I really took my time as it it's a brand new phone. Doing the same again on the same phone would be 20 mins max.

It's definitely better to do it properly and learn why what you're doing than trying to rush and having to fix some problem that you didn't anticipate, for sure.

Thanks, I've installed Better Battery Stats and I think I may have found the culprit...only time will tell to see if it will improve.

Google Sync Contacts is keeping the phone awake as indicated by Better Battery Stats for almost 18 hours which seems excessive!
Sounds like you've cracked it! BBS is a really nice program...

Is there any way of using my gs4 to make NFC payments? I have a credit card with NFC that I use. Can I clone it to my phone?

doesn't work that way unfortunately, you can't (in theory) copy the logic embedded in the card into the NFC on the phone, plus theres no app access to the secure element in the phone as far as i know.

I think some of the operators are doing phone based payments though, not looked into it for a while... otherwise its a case of waiting for google to pull their finger out and release wallet over here
