soo. broke my back

Update:

Appointment at hospital today to have various scans to see how its doing.

have been told i may be there for 7 hours tho :/

Sooo.
Am able to sit mt my desk for 10 mins at a time before back gives up.

Standing hurts still and can walk around 100 yards before haveing to stop.

Managing the pain with codeine paracetamol and diclofenac.
The meds knock me out tho and I find it hard to function but anytgings better than the pain

Whats worrying is that the major pain is not from my spine. Its from the area just above my buttocks... will see a doc tommorow I think.

Live well people! Stay away from segways

Keep at it, unfortunately it'll take a very long time. When I broke my sternum it was about 18months till I was back to normal, I aim gone back is even worse. Hang on in there and don't use painkillers to do more than your body can take. Keep In touch with your doctor and be honest.

7hrs ouch,

If your laid up for 12 weeks think about supplementing parts of the diet that might be affected, keep your protein levels high and think about calcium and vitamin D supplementation. My brother in law has just been given the same advice for a 12 week stay due to a bacterial bone infection. May help reduce atrophy of the spinal muscles and slow bone loss if your completely immobile.

All the best in your recovery.

Just got home, Was hell being there so long, Not many places to rest or sit / lay due to so many people.

I did get a bed for an hour though but had to give it up for a more needing patient.

been told its healing well, But they dont know why my lower back is so painfull. :/

I hired a Segway during my 6 months at CalTech. It was awesome. Why they're not legal for everyday use over here is beyond me.

Probably because of incidents like this...

Seriously though, they are far too dangerous to be used in public, vehicles that continue to operate, running people over and flying in front of cars after their user has fallen off are not suitable for the road or pavement. Horse riding seems safer than these things. The fact that the company owner was thrown off a cliff by one serves as a testament to their hazards.

On Dec 4th last year, a bin lorry pulled out on me. Nothing I could do. I slammed into the side of it riding my GPZ900

Shattered my knee
Broke my femur ( 14 places including 3 on the knuckle )
Broke my pelvis ( 4 breaks )
Broke my spine ( 4 vertebrae )
Broke my ribs ( all on left and 8 on right )
Broke my right arm ( simple fracture, both bones plus 2 fingers ( little and next to it ) )
Broke my left arm ( already have pins so more added, now have 6 pins, loss of use of hand ( not entirely ) very weak however, all my fingers also broken, and can no longer clench my fist or open fully )
Left elbow and left shoulder also broken. unable to lift arm above head with ease.

Internally, my lungs were pierced multiple times but luckily ribs filled the holes.
Liver torn into two pieces but that healed up after a few months and I had the drain eventually removed. Thats now fully recovered.
Spleen was stabbed but thats recovered.
Kidneys both ruptured, dialasys unfortunately.
Intestines cut up massively by bits of ribs and bone plus they got squeezed out of my rectum and I have lost several feet of bowel etc.

Fighting to get out of wheelchair ( Im winning )

Recently hit massive depression barrier however and not coping with it at times.

But Im alive against all odds

Doctors told family that I will not make it past a week. Intensive care for 3 months in staffordshire hospital but then got moved to Glan Clwyd closer to home.

Bought myself another bike recently much to the horror of many family and friends but hey... I might never be able to ride it, but Im buggered if Im going to let this get me down.

With that many wounds, you really shouldnt be here....

well done man... I doubt I could`ve survived that

Just wondering, did you even feel anything when you slammed into the lorry or just passed out completely?

No, I am NOT trolling although I can fully understand why one would assume that.

Should I be here? No. Absolutely not, no way, no how... But here I am.

The doctors have said however, that the only reason they can put on the how and why I did survive, is that I am a big guy, with a sturdy build. I used to play rugby, and I am a BlackBelt in Karate and Tae Kwon Do, or rather used to be, I now a bit of a fat sod, after quitting smoking and piling on the extra pounds and so the combination of fairly good muscle mass, plus a cushioning of lard actually saved my life.

True, much to my annoyance. Basically, if I was skinny, Id be dead, but being a fatty saved my life!

+1 to the chubbies

Speed? No, I was somewhere around 65 give or take, but a recycling lorry is pretty much a solid block of metal so... Ouch

Feel anything?
Well, I had a million and one little movies going on in my head, did I do this or did they do that, I could not remember anything of the crash at all, and I was simply filling in the gaps trying to find answers and failing all the time.
When the coppers eventually talked to be to get a statement, I started off knowing nothing, I said that, but as we talked, I knew this was wrong and that was wrong, and by the time we finished, it all started to come back.

Now, a few months later, I am suffering with nightmares and flashbacks and its killing me inside.

Do I remember the impact?
A little fraction of a second after it yes... Kind of bouncing off it but not remembering hitting the floor after it. Again, this could be memory or my mind filling in gaps, but I am sure I remember.

I have asked for copies of my X-Rays and I have been told yes, but I still have not had them.

I am not really much for facebook or youtube, but I do have ssome rubbish in there under fatrakoon, so if you need some proof, there is something up there. I might even do an update for my friends on there one day, but in truth I simply cannot be bothered with them.

I pray to God that if I am ever in your situation that I have the attitude you've got.

Nothing but respect. Keep it right up, and fight back the depression the best you can. Totally respect you buying a bike, too.

Ah! Dont pray to a god.
Pray to the Paramedics, doctors and nurses.
They are the ones who kept me alive, and put me back together.
God was nowhere to be seen.. As usual.
