*** iPhone 5S/5C - September 10th ***

Good point actually.

So far i have not seen any trolling at all here? Everyone has got along perfectly fine.

Well this is a thread to discuss the iPhone 5S and 5C, not to argue whether Android is better. It's quite simply all personal preference, so it'd be good if we could leave it there, can't see that happening though...

will iOS 7 be available on my iphone 4s or is it just for 5+?

Yep, iPhone 4 onwards and iPad 2 onwards are all getting it (though the iPhone 4 version is a bit watered down).

You've fallen for their marketing, unless you truly believe Apple is the only company adding features for a reason or that their reasons are better.

Not sure thats true.

Take NFC for example, Samsung add it and people say wow then realise there is actually very little to do with it. Apple choose not to add it and people moan but I suspect when apple do add it it will be at the point where the market is truly ready and it's nt just an empty feature but one that can be used.

Take widgets and other UI tweaks, Samsung and HTCadd thousands of such things the majority of which are not used. Samsung take this to the extreme and bloat the android OS so far that it runs like a dog even on very high spec hardware. If apple ever go down the widgets route I expect them to have a well thought out strategy and widgets etc people actually use.

It's two ways to crack the same nut Samsung and HTC throw the kitchen sink at a great paper spec sheet, Apple go for lesser spec but greater usability.

For me the only company really doing anything different at the moment is Sony but nobody has noticed!

Well I for one cannot wait to ditch my Android phone for the new iPhone.

I'm sick of Android always crashing, showing me a spinning circle when loading up the app drawer, after browsing sites that are large.

Been a user for over 4 years and it always seems to suffer from the same problems I had with my HTC Desire all those years ago.

I really really don't understand why apple stick to the same crappy icon based UI. :/

Because widgets open up a world of pain regarding battery life and most people with iPhones don't care about them. I used android for a few years and never liked widgets. If you care about looking at something you will look at the app. I can't read email in a widget, tweets will either have to scroll or the widget will have to take up most of the screen, I don't care that much about how the weather has changed since 10 minutes ago.

I found that widgets didn't make me in the slightest bit more productive and I would even wait while it scrolled through items in the widget to see them all which I would have been better served going into the app itself.

What widgets do people want to see on the iphone? iOS7 puts all the useful shortcuts you would want in the drag up from the bottom panel and with the amount you use that, its best to not have it taking up screen real estate that you can use for icons. You can also access that from all apps so its more useful I find.

An S4 runs like a dog? A grey hound yes! The S4 is anything but slow. I get far more use out of my S4 and productivity is much better than my GF's IP5. She is always on mine watching YouTube and browsing the internet.

Oh noes I am going to be called a troll

Out of the box my S4 is slower than my iPhone 5 (loaded with stuff). I'm sure if you flashed a stripped down ROM it'd be better though, which is what you may have done (and most people would never do).

Agreed, I find widgets to be massively overrated as well.

I'm probably going to get the 5S to take advantage of my free 4G upgrade in December, my 4 is getting quite long in the tooth as well.

I don't understand why Apple get their own forum and threads whereas all other mobile manufacturers are lumped together? All that means is that we can't talk about comparisons as we're "fanboys" or "trolls"....everyone in the mobile section gets along, be it talking about WP8 or Android, why is Apple so exclusive in that regard?

The Mobiles section is for all intents and purposes an Android forum. 95% of the threads are about Android and anyone who asks what phone to buy get recommended an Android device.

I don't know what it is but Android users but a vocal section seem to have the urge to constantly defend their choice of OS and poo-poo the alternatives. I made the mistake of suggesting that the iPad was still the best tablet and got a torrent of abuse.

That to me is pretty much my experience of android in a nutshell. Look at all these things you can do with our phone. Oh, but you will never want to do 95% of them and you are sacrificing a lot to have them. My 4S still runs iOS7 perfectly and its 2 years old. My last android phone didn't ever get the latest OS till months and months after it was released and when it did it ran like a dog.

Why does she not do it on her IP5?

Screen size and quality! The main reasons, big difference to both screens watching and viewing the same content, I am used to using my S4 for viewing content and when I use my GFs IP5 it just feels strange, so much smaller, and on the flip side when she used my phone is like wow its much bigger.

No doubting the IP5 has a better feel in the hand, but its too small.

All personal preference though, everybody is different! Every IPhone user I speak to mentions the S4 is far too big, again its what your used to!

My 90+ year old illiterate grandmother can use an iPad to facetime. I like to see her try an android tablet !

Steve Ballmer's quote of claiming you need to be a computer scientist to use an Android phone amused me.

Mainly because I AM a computer scientist :D

Also WP8 doesn't get enough love :(

My gf's S4 is stock and i simply cannot see how it could be faster beyond cutting out animation transitions. There's no frame skipping, pausing or lag at all! And she uses all social media including QQ and WhatApp all the sodding time. Hence i highly doubt the 5S will be faster out of the box. In fact all phones released in the last 12 months have been click> straight into app.

If you're an iPhone user then the benefits of widgets will take a while to come to you.

For me it's:

Press center button while off - unlock phone by Swipping

On the home screen i see weather, time, date, temp, all notifications, folders i set up to segregate my apps to type (games, shopping, Google etc) and search bar with mic icon for voice commands. (Phone, contacts texts and camera icons as along the bottom in a separate bar as well for easy access)

All this information is useful to me, if not i can change it to a widget that is useful

Swipe left - BBC news, twitter and FB

or Swipe right - Hotmail, Googlemail and Pulse news feeds

Swipe again for calendar and my to do list.

You can't get to all that information as quickly and easily on iOS

As I said a couple of pages back, the problem is that a thread in the mobiles section got merged with this thread, resorting in a forward link where all the Fandroids are coming from to troll.

Bad mistake IMO.

Agreed. I'm not sure why this happened tbh. I'm going to ask that this thread remains for the discussion of Apple iPhoe 5s/5c only from now on. If you want to discuss other devices then do so in the Phones Forum, not in the Apple section.

Anyone trying to deliberately take this thread off topic or trying to start a fan boy argument will have their posts removed and their account suspended. Please remember though, an opposing opinion does not make a troll.

Please RTM anyone trying to do so - thanks

edit i have deleted the the forward link in the Mobile section.

Why is it separate at all?, when do the other manufacturers get their own sections?

Surprised at the decision to keep the iPhone 4S alive. How can they justify selling an old style connector device when they know it is obsolete?

I have to agree with this.

Some asked whats so innovative about about bigger numbers with Samsung. In my opinion, a 5"+ 720p screen is innovative because it completely changed the experience of browsing the web from painful into a pleasure.

Browsing these forums on a Galaxy S2 4.3 inches (800x480) and then the Note II 5.5 inches (1280x720) was a massive massive difference. Most of the time i didn't even have to zoom in at all! I was almost a desktop experience. It's virtually impossible on an iphone comfortably without zooming round which wastes a heck of a lot of time and is just rubbish, and of course, there's playing embedded youtube videos without having to lunch another app

EDIT - Admiral Huddy, i was still writing this post while the last 10 was being written! But i don't see whats wrong with healthy debate. It seems it's the people with iPhones that does all the complaining about Trolls, Fanboi's, and being aggressive and yelling 'not fair!' when things are being compared.
