*** The Official Samsung Galaxy S4 Thread ***

Hey guys, my girlfriend really wants the pink S4... I've found some on eBay but obviously it's coming from Taiwan... Will this be ok for the UK? Just checking before splashing out, thanks in advance.

Better to purchase it from here mate, muon gave a link to one. It's just hassle buying from overseas because if anything goes wrong with it and it needs a warranty repair, Samsung Europe won't do it, you'd have to send it back to Taiwan.

It's a good place to start, it's deodexed so all the themes and mods will work and all the crap's been removed. No need to flash the modem if yours works, check the wifi is working that can be an issue after a mix of baseband and build.

Get it on and working, do a nandroid backup for a place to go back to. Other than that, see what mods and themes you like. Then look at the various builds that include what you like, plain vanilla or ones with loads of options. Cyanogenmod, GoogleEdition , MIUI, Pacman. There's a lot to play with.

ill go for it then and report back.

i do like the look of that bobcat rom and what ever the add on is that lets you have a 6 bar signal meter as mine shows zero bars but is more than able to make calls etc

EDIT flashed that one fine but itching for a proper custom one with add ons and stuff:)

How do i work out what ones work with my phone? like the big long numbers i was talking about:D??

The bobcat one says i have to have a newer baseband yet i thought a new base band was a big no no?

EDIT2 if i go into system storage its saying i have used 8.74gb already out of 16gb!!?? Any ideas, as its a fresh install with no videos or pictures on it yet?

I have done, thanks for the advice :)

@Gavin.

If it says i9505 that's all there is to worry about, last three digits is the build the rest is the area. You can mix baseband but it can mess with the wifi, so you'll see a wifi fix posted often as not. I'd flash (odin) the MH8 modem (make sure its approx 19mb, no bigger) separately to avoid issues with any MH8 build, nothing to it.
Looking at that one he says the bootloader has been removed from v5 MH8 and an MDA base is fine, if you flashed a MH8 rom and then MH8 modem you'll be fine. He recommends the full wipe, you'll lose all your settings so backup any data. Looks like it'll ask you to choose a kernel on install, I use the Adam version ymmv.

Since getting the MH8 update my phone has slowed down considerably. The juttering on the homescreen is back as it is with launching applications.

I assume it's MH8 related or maybe one of the apps I updated since then but it's hard to tell. Anyone know how to check or had similar issues?

Just seen somebody comment in the Apple section mentioning the S4 runs dog slow?

Just pulled out my old S1 and wow I think me may be getting the Samsung line up wrong. The S4 is by far the quickest phone I have used, I am on stock too! Even using my old S3 feel ancient to the experience the S4 gives you.

May try to root, but don't want any issues come I like the UI from Samsung, I don't want it to be basic... Hmmmm decisions

ill try that then matey:)

what rom are you using by the way?

thanks for your help.

this rom also looks nice http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2253528

just so i can understand it better where does it say about whether bootloaders have been removed?

Im just trying to find the MH8 Modem.........im sure i saw a list on XDA of modems..

EDIT all working find and did not have to flash any additional files.
Considering i was a flash freak on the HTC one S i cant believe how different it is ! Im still trying to work out why when i do a full wipe all my folders and stuff are still on the phone. I want it all fresh again now ive flashed roms. Even stuff ive downloaded is still on the phone. Ive done a full wipe from CWM ive done a factory reset on the phone as well.

The software plays a large part in it (obviously, i know). It's worth bearing in mind that the s4 certainly did have its issues at launch, and that was down to software which was for the most part fixed a few weeks after. Nevertheless, the samsung firmware is both its party piece with some great apps and it's Achilles heel. It's not perfect; it is unnecessarily large at about 5 times the size of the aokp/pa/cm based roms. The stock browser isnt brilliant (being based on an older version of chrome doesnt help).

The custom roms, particularly those based on android 4.3, do make quite a difference to to experience in general. It's just a shame that we have to root and flash to get there. I cant really agree that everything is instant on the stock rom as some people were claiming in the iPhone 5 thread, because it wasn't in my experience and i expect everybody else running custom roms will tell you the same.

'do make quite a difference'

I pick this quote out as me been a stock user cant quite understand how?

The phone is by far the best I have used, I could list the ones I have had and played with but it would be like a novel! I cant quite see how this is possible hence the fact I have not rooted, yet!

My S1 was rooted just so I could get it to 4.2 but feel the S4 does not need to be? You loose a lot of the Samsung software, most call it bloat but to me is very useful, multiview, smart features and s planner. To me when you root you are left with a basic device and you have to build it up to how you want it. For me the stock rom is perfect. I cant see how it could be quicker? Every task I do on the phone is opened in the blink of an eye. The only issue I have is the camera in low light conditions and I doubt custom roms can fix this?

Also Apple's pinch to zoom response is second to none. It's all software related now as the hardware is powerful enough.

Scroll through your contacts list - if it isn't ultra smooth on the GS4 then it just show how poorly it's been designed. For example, the Google Play store is a choppy mess for scrolling. Poorly designed 1st party app.

AOSP 4.3 is meant to be dead smooth. Can't wait.

Root doesn't affect the ROM in anyway other than giving you system/root access.

Because everything is not instant as claimed, like i explained. It's not really instant with 4.3 based roms, either, but the animations are very slick which masks most of it anyway.

Root it, install a rom and it come back to us :)

I never found a good use for multiview. Makes more sense on the note but imo the s4's screen is too small. the smart features are hit and miss. the smart view stuff doesnt work at all well unless you are in daylight. smart pause, same issue. changing pages and scrolling using your hand is a gimmick.

root doesnt mean you loose or gain any features. The rom you install dictates that. Look at pacman, for example. most of the Paranoid Android features, most of the AOKP features, features from other roms...its absolutely packed. I use pacman and yes i lost the smart stuff but gained a load of useful stuff too. Features the TW roms don't have.

Every task I do on the phone is opened in the blink of an eye

You are lucky then :)

No rom can. It's a hardware issue.

This is true.

I dunno, can't quite see how it can be quicker, I will need to try a custom rom I guess!

I like the Samsung apps on the phone, for me it make the phone complete. If I wanted a basic device I would have purchased a Nexus device. But apples and oranges, everybody is different and some prefer the customisation custom roms gives you!

What features did you gain going to pacman?

What features did you gain going to pacman?

Pure AOSP look and feel

Custom DPI per App

Lots and lots of UI tweaks like screen not coming on when you connect/disconnect charger, custom carrier label, recents RAM bar, full date in status bar, torch via home button on lock screen, notification LED is always full brightness, turn off adaptive backlight, privacy guard (limit app access to personal data), nice fade out screen off animation. And lots lots more.
