Declined holiday ruining potential opportunity.... What would you?

Some decent replies here, and some GD replies too, as to be expected :P

Personally sounds like your job is causing you all manner of problems, and in the not too distant future your health will start to suffer. You sound unhappy in life in general from what you have written. You only live once, take the opportunity and go to Dubai, see if you like it and if you can get a job out there.

As for current job, you have a few options. It doesn't sound like you can actually get it booked off. You have to decide now if you want to play it honest, or with the cards close to your chest.

Tell your boss you are not happy and need time off, you will have it as paid holiday or are happy to take unpaid leave, but either way you need the time off. If he still cannot comply, you can then either call in sick the day you leave, get signed off by the doctors with stress, which is easy to fake, or hand him your weeks notice one week from the day you want to leave. Once in Dubai, avoid getting tanned and don't post stuff on facebook.

Basically you have to decide what in life you value and what you want to achieve. You said yourself you have 9k in savings, you can afford to make this leap of faith if it's what you really want.

As I said, you only live once. Will you live to regret not taking the opportunity?

Go and tell your boss you're taking the next 3 weeks off, but not to worry, it's cool, he doesn't need to pay you. See how it goes down.

Its not actually as daft as it sounds.. As long as its to look after a dependant then the company cannot take any action against you. Obviously doesn't help the OP but it is legal.

Even if it is legal, and they can't take direct action, you can bet your bottom dollar they would take the next opportunity to do something indirectly about it. I would.

Sister-in-law is clearly dependent on the OP for helping her reach orgasmic Valhalla, therefore this must be OK. He must go and look after (i.e. bang the hell out of) her.

The job has made me feel this way for a long time but I've always dealt with or tried to deal with it myself. I pick up for a month or two but I end up in the same state. It just takes a lot for me to ever go to the doctor with anything and sometimes I can't help but feel I should just man up.

Having the time as holiday is a definite no go. I'm gonna book in at the doctors and see what they say. If they happen to give me enough time off to go to Dubai then I'll go.

If upon my return work are funny with me and make things difficult I shall just hand my notice in. I'll time this for Xmas when I'll have a bit more in savings and she comes back from Dubai to the UK. If things are still good then I may well just go and never look back.

Today my request for annual leave has been declined because other staff members are on annual leave for the 5 weeks running up to my request and in my bosses words 'he will have his balls handed to him on a plate for allowing it'.

So it's one rule for the 5 people that booked their weeks previous to yours consecutively, and another rule for you? That comes across to me as victimisation. Do you have a personnel or HR department, or a whistle-blowing policy in your company? I think the "cutting your balls off" remark is grounds for bullying. If you haven't done so already, keep a diary of his behaviour towards you.

who cares - if he's planning on leaving fairly soon anyway then the risk of upsetting them and having some consequences to face is less of an issue

I mean upsetting your boss can lead to not doing well next pay rise, being closer in line for redundancy or missing out on good projects/getting given more grunt work don't really apply... They can't actually do much more than that and in most places it would take a bit of time for management to be able to actively screw with someone... by which time he out to have left anyway.

Apparently he can have 5 weeks consecutive but if he allows another it will be HIS balls handed to him on a plate, not mine.

I'm pretty sure we will somewhere, I do think it is pretty unfair especially with his next comment. 'I know you need a break'.

You do have rights to leave, but the employer is also entitled to deny it at busy times:

https://www.gov.uk/holiday-entitlement-rights/booking-timeoff

When leave can and can’t be taken
Employers can:

  • tell their staff to take leave, eg bank holidays or Christmas
  • restrict when leave can be taken, eg at certain busy periods
  • There may be rules about this in the employment contract or it may be what normally happens in the workplace. The notice period for this is at least twice as long as the leave they want their staff to take.

Not quite the same, but when I used to do 2nd line, I did get myself signed off with stress for two months as I was as miserable in my job as you sound in yours.

Definitely worth booking an appointment with the quack.
