*** iPhone 5S/5C - September 10th ***

What time did the 5S orders go live on apples UK site?

Midnight on the 20th September.

The Webstore didn't come up until a few minutes into the hour, but the Apple Store App was already up, so many, including myself ordered through that. I had confirmation of order by 12:02 which was before the web store was even back up.

I think all the phones that have been 'Preparing for Dispatch' since Monday will remain so until UPS' three day closure for the Chinese Holidays finish. Meaning we will probably see some movement tomorrow evening and may then get our phones on Monday.

After receiving my iPhone 5S 64gb yesterday and using it for a while, I've decided to send it back for a refund. I won't deny that the phone is very good and if I didn't have a 5 beforehand I would have kept it without question. Unfortunately for me the phone doesn't offer a huge perceivable difference to the 5 other than the TouchID sensor, which I have to admit is great and I hope apple continue to offer this feature for their newer products. I'll probably end waiting 6 months and buying one second hand at a cheaper price, £710 for the 64gb version is a huge dent to the wallet. In the meantime I'll look out for a cheap 64gb 5 to keep me going, as I'm struggling for space with my current 32gb!

Not being rude - but no wonder phones are expensive if people use DSR like that

What from the reviews /specs/ initial presentation would have made you think it would have been anything otherwise ?

Or wait and get a demo in-store

I kind of thought that somewhat as well. Surely it was kind of obvious what the difference was from the 5 and if you can't really afford to be spending money on a new phone that you don't particularly need, then why bother at all?

Wasn't there somebody else on here who tried out two 5s in store, then bought them both, took them home, unopened, then decided it wasn't a worthy upgrade and will return them? Seems such a hassle.

I also noticed on Mac Rumours that there seem to be a number of people who have bought a space grey 5s from an Apple Store, simply just to 'have' one and use while they wait for the silver/gold Apple Store Online order they placed at midnight. They then intend to return the space grey one they bought in shop to the Apple store using their returns policy. It all just seems a bit bonkers to me how impatient some people are.

Don't be ridiculous, the price of phones is so high because people are willing to pay it. The number of items that are DSRed is so tiny it couldn't possibly put more than a couple of £ on to the price of any particular item, if at all! Apple is one of the most cash-rich companies in the world so don't for a second think that the high price is driven by anything other than their ability to very expertly extract the money from your wallet. Estimates put profits per iPhone 5 at anywhere from $325-450 per unit!

And the DSR is there precisely for people who can't get to a store to check it out. Fortunately for most Apple is one of the few stores where u can actually demo every product.

I do agree tho that it was silly to go from a 5 to a 5s and expect a world of difference.

Taking the retail price and subtracting the BoM cost doesn't leave you with the profit. There's many other costs to factor in - retail, distribution, marketing, R&D, etc. Apple's profit margins are much higher than the industry average but they're certainly not making $450 per unit.

Yep I was one of those, at the opening event the person before me reserved the last silver 16GB meaning I could either opt for 32GB or leave with nothing. Going away with no handset was not an option after queueing for four and a half hours in the cold. I left my online order open which arrived yesterday after which I returned the 32GB. In my view you can blame the resellers/scalpers for that.

Random question - how long did it take for everyone's iPhone 5s to arrive once it reached Cologne, Germany?

Which is exactly where mine has been since this morning.

Looking back through the thread it seems it was two days, mine is showing as being due here on friday and "on time"

Apple products have always had a premium price tag, so I can't really see the point you're trying to make. Apple has great after sales support and is one of the reasons I remain loyal to them, they know people are willing to pay a premium for their products and that they expect a decent customer service in return. The price tag on their product has no real bearing on customers returning their products!

It's also an easy fact to forget that we don't all live next to an Apple store to try before buying, if this option was open to me I would have done so, and probably would have still ended up buying as it's hard to test every single new feature out properly in a store. It's not exactly convenient to travel a 160 mile round trip to sample a phone either way.

I bought it because most iPhone 5s reviews seem favourable and as I needed greater storage I thought I'd jump on to the bandwagon and try it out. It was only for me to decide whether the purchase was worth it or not, every review has differing opinions and it's hard to be conclusive about a product without actually using it yourself.

I wasn't expecting huge leaps forward and have never expected so for an incremental update, but I'm finding these leaps are becoming less and less noticeable to the point where you have to question if spending the extra money can be justified.

I kind of thought that somewhat as well. Surely it was kind of obvious what the difference was from the 5 and if you can't really afford to be spending money on a new phone that you don't particularly need, then why bother at all?

The thing is, I could afford the 5s and would have been happy to spend the extra if I felt it was worth it. I needed an extra 32gb and thought I could kill two birds with one stone. Unfortunately after using the phone, for me it wasn't worth the extra £300, but opinions obviously differ for other people and that's fair enough. As I mentioned previously, I couldn't reach this conclusion without actually buying and trying the product, only now I can determine whether or not a 5 64gb would have been the better option for me and now I've determined that it was. All my own opinion of course!

Just been on phone to Apple asking when they likely to start shipping the 5s to those that ordered later, all i got was a they don't know... so cancelled my 16gb the phone and done the unimaginable order a 32Gb Grey one from CPW

Good news is I'll have my phone tomorrow. :D
Bad news is it be locked to the first sim i put init, ie 02 while i'm with Giffgaff.

This tbh doesn't really bother me, as I plan on staying with Giffgaff for the foreseeable future, and when the time does come to sell on the phone I'll see what resale value is while it locked to 02, and if the difference is large compared to unlocked then i'll see about getting it unlocked for £15 with a 02 payg simcard next year.

Do you know if you can pay for it to be unlocked?

Neither it what they give out when you get a contract with them, but they sell this as sim free "Not Unlocked" at the same price as what you pay if you was to buy a fully unlocked one from Apple.

Like I mentioned it will lock to the first sim you insert, 02 are pretty good when it comes to unlocking, but the other like Three, Vodafone & EE might make life abit hard to get it unlocked, because you haven't actually bought it on either contract or PAYG from them.

It the risk you take if you plan on selling it on.

This development is seriously tempting me into cancelling my order with Apple and buying from CPW
