** ANOTHER WEEKEND MEGADEAL: Samsung S27B970D ULTRA THIN LED PROFESSIONAL PLS MONITOR!! - £300 DISC

Just got this amazing screen set up and did a few tests - what are your thoughts on the back light bleed as shown in the photo below? Is this grounds for an RMA?

How does it look when playing a movie with dark scenes? A camera can tend to overemphasise backlight on an all black screen. Test it in real usage in normal conditions and then decide if it something you can live with.

After trying a few films and playing a bit of RTW2 & Batman AC it's certainly noticeable however I guess not completely off-putting.

I know a certain amount of BLB seems to be expected with these types of screens but for the money I guess I expected it to be much less prominent....

Yeah, if it's noticeable to you then you should be able to RMA. If it was a £180 monitor then you could probably live with it, but since you spent £500-800 on the screen then it's not something that you should just accept, as it is one of the best of the best screens :D

The review at pcmonitors.info has this to say on the backlight:

"We observed no noticeable backlight bleed even in a pitch black room. There was, however, a silver-blue sheen of what we would dub ‘PLS glow’ – a characteristic seen on any modern IPS or PLS model of this size. This becomes more pronounced off angle but on a monitor of this size it can also be seen from a normal sitting position at the bottom corners in particular."

The only minor criticisms would be a slight loss of detail at the very corners of the picture (‘PLS glow’) and some particularly dark shades such as a deep brown iris surrounding a black pupil not being quite distinct enough. These weaknesses are present on all IPS and PLS models, though, and all of the important detail and most subtle detail was visible. It was also nice to see how uniform and ‘bleed free’ the backlight was in these dark scenes whilst the high-end shone through with a bright and rangy quality – an enjoyable experience, overall.

Do you think you are seeing bleed or 'PLS Glow'? According to this review there should be no bleed at all.

Good find that, cheers...

Just read through, shame there aren't any example pics of what they deem to be 'PLS Glow' as I've no idea what the difference is tbh so yes I guess it could be that, feels like a severe case of PLS Glow though :/

I'll play around with it some more tonight when its dark and take another view. I'd rather avoid the returns process but at the same time want to feel like it was money well spent! Or am I being too fussy?? IDK

Thanks for the help anyway

Isn't this monitor supposed to be particularly even all over, with little variance, and calibrated at the factory? I'd send it back if it's that noticeable in use. For that much money, you'd expect it to be as good as they claim.

There seems to be a lot of variability in screen production (not just for monitors, but TVs too). There will be 10 people singing the praises of a product, and one person who gets a duff panel that just seems totally unacceptable and at the other end of the quality spectrum. If you've been unlucky, send it back.

You've paid for a quality product, you should get what you've paid for.

I have some back light bleed on mine more in the bottom right but yours looks a lot worse when I watch movies with black bars on either side it's more noticeable but when gaming or in desktop its no problem at all.

Have my monitor settings on default an brightness at 100 % I'm use to my Dell 2407 which has higher brightness level turn my Samsung down to 80% when watching movies.
20% or 30% would be way to dark for me lowest I've tried is 65% looks ok but perfer it higher.

That's useful to know thanks, im starting to lean towards returning it now tbh. I've posted a query in the customer service section as I've just seen that this screen is now showing oos. Might have a wait on for a replacement!

First things first, check your brightness level as these seem to come set at 100. I've personally got it at 20 although that's a bit low for most people. Second, move your head to opposite one of the corners. If the light stays in that corner then it's bleed, but if it goes then it's pls glow. The way it's rather uniformly coming from the corners does make me think it's glow, but you never know.

Now you're talking. Thread subscribed.

P.S. Are you twisting their arm on the S27B971DS as well?

OCUK doesn't sell the S27B971DS, does it?

Not currently, but I see no reason why they couldn't. Especially as they have demonstrated that they can sell a pile of monitors at that right price.
Would be on it like a car bonnet, definitely buy one if their was an awesome deal on the S27B971DS.

Yeah I think they all get pls glow which you can see pretty easy by moving your head. I have my brightness down around 30, down from 100 which is way too bright!

It is quite easy to determine whether it is PLS glow or backlight bleeding you're seeing. Simply move >2m back from the monitor keeping your head as central as possible. PLS glow is not visible from this viewing position, any bleed would be. The quality control is very good on the Samsung monitors and if you do have severe backlight bleed your unit would be an exception and you'd likely have better luck with your replacement. As people have noted PLS glow does creep in 'off angle' (even if you're 2m+ back from the monitor) which is why you need to keep your head central and move back to make it disappear. The off-angle aspects are a lot easier to capture on camera in a representative way - check the viewing angle video in the review for an example of what you'd see 'off-angle'.

Well, finally got the power cable from OCUK ( no issues cos I was away last week anyway). What can I say about this monitor. One word: EPIC!!

Really is. Colours, contrast, performance, resolution, looks. And the glass pane is not too reflective at all if you have the right angle to a window and light source. Cannot wait to do some serious work on this thing. Thanks OCUK, YOU ROCK!!

Had mine for a couple of weeks now but apart from initial test has been in the box whilst I waited for new office furniture. Office furniture arrived early this morning so unpacked monitor properly and noticed several large dust particles behind the glass.

Photo's (I have circled the particles located behind the glass, anything else you can see is surface dust)

A bit annoying really for a premium panel. Even at sale price is still expensive. Should I return it?

Maybe i'm just unlucky but I have no luck with monitors. Is it just me or is build quality overall just not of the quality you should expect when spending a lot of money? I'm tempted to just request a refund or a credit note and not purchase another monitor until I can actually "see" what am I buying first. A trip to OCUK in a couple of weeks maybe.
