2013 Haswell Retina MacBook Pro...

Basically i have a 2009 mac pro

32GB ram, dual quad cores etc, its a dream but I wont get the new mac pro.

To date ive had a 13inch i7 MBA for 4months, its great but the screen is....lacking and I miss the huge real estate , partly because i spent a lot of time in text, pdf etc.

I am pondering if the base 15inch is good enough for me , having in mind as I said I just chuck (literally) my MBA in my backpack and go, dont even charge up, do a days work (at a desk ironically) and come back.

I've heard all the arguments about space on a train etc.. but come on...how much people get laptops out on trains instead of ipads, etc etc now...so my query is a matter of portability and ram.

On my mac pro ive got about 14 apps open, consuming 5.36GB ram including photo shop, and final cut pro.

My friend is a photographer and he has the older 15" retina with 8GB. He says for him, 16GB just isn't required.

I guess so long as you aren't creating a load of virtual machines then 8GB is plenty.

I'm 99.9% sure the base 15" is the one for me....actually, no....I've made my mind up. It is the one for me :D

Ram aside, it's then a matter of portability?

As i said, its two coffee mugs heavier on 13inch MBA...trust me i walked around carrier two mugs on my laptop...its not that bad. lol

I'm torn between the base 15" and the 13" with 256GB SSD.
I can't decide which is going to suit me the best.

The screen is killer on both but do I need the quad-core CPU and the extra 2"?
This will replace my 2013 Haswell 13" MBA which has epic battery life. Although for me, as long as it lasts 8hrs (working day), anything more is not needed.

I think I need to read a review of the new 13". I've read The Verge's review of the 15".

im floating towards the base 15inch

then in 2-3 years when my mac pro and this machine is showing its age, i think some of this tech wold have come along nicely.

I think pretty much everyone is looking at those two

Had a go on the mid range 13" in store today. Seemed to fly, don't see the need for the extra money on the 15" if you're unsure.

The guy before me bought the last one, I was gutted. If only I'd eaten breakfast 10 minutes earlier.

The reason why people whip out ipads is because they ar elikely carrying a 15inch laptop. Had they bene carrying a 13inch im sure they wont mind whipping that out instead of a ipad.

And what about traveling by plane? I tried watching a movie on the ipad and did not get on well because you cant stand it and angle it the appropriate way even with the official touch cover as it will only stand itself in one angle whilst a 13inch laptop can be angled accordingly.

And what productive work can you do on a freaking ipad? Seriously you and everyone here is looking at these laptops for productivity, not to browse facebook and watch movies

im a photographer too and on my main rig i had only 6gb ram yet that ran Lightroom perfect and did not max out the ram on my machine.

i now upgraded to 12gb ram though and im wondering why i bothered as it doesnt even use half of it.

seriously 4-6gb is enough in this day and age, well on PC windows it is.

Re: 16GB vs 8GB, it's not needed most of the time and now that the SSD is PCIe it means that paging out/in is a lot faster. I chose to go for 16GB as I have gone over the 8GB in my old rMBP a few times stitching together panoramas. The extra expense of 16GB was offset by the price drop since I was considering a similar spec before the refresh.

Twice i've missed my delivery for this, leave the flat for literally an hour, of course the courier comes then :(

Saying Monday now, i'm hoping I can pick it up at the depot tomorrow.

I went 13", arrived yesterday (i5 2.4/8GB RAM/256GB SSD) - first Mac I've ever bought, very happy with it so far!

Just waiting on some cases for it, I understand the ones for the older 13 rMBP don't quite fit as it's a little thicker (I'm looking at something like the Moshi iGlaze)

How do you find the 13", I understand Mavericks + haswell as fixed the scrolling on most OSX apps but how is it on chrome for sites like the verge. Outside of this I don't have much issues with getting 13".

I will be going to check them both out tomorrow and see what I end up getting. Will order tomorrow thou. Good luck with all you guys deciding, I think I will end up with a 13" and I will try it for 1 week and return if it doesn't work for me.

When i looked up intels specs

the I7 in my MBA is better then the i5/i7 in the 13inch, bar obviously more ram.

I dont understand, how is the MBA i7
1.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz

Better than the
2.8GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz
In the rMBP?

In other news my rMBP has been dispatched from a slow boat from China.

Geekbench scores recently came out showed the MBA was better on this front in certain core tests.

If you wanted to be a real CPU studier then youll see the extensions and 'extras' on the i7 for the MBA but that only applies to very few users.

The quad core chips in the 15inch are obviously the best and if defies logic that they are not in the 13inch bar stopping the 15inch market collapsing....
