A large percentage of backers are interested in play-testing the Alpha and Beta versions, feeding back their findings and helping to shape what does/does not get included in the game.
Some are interested in finding and reporting bugs.
Others just want to play it NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! like me..... :D
.

some will be so heavily invested that there feedback will likely be biased though

some people are going to jump straight into end game ships? or will there be more powerful ones we don't know about that won't be bought for real life cash?

part of me want's to upgrade from a 300i but another part of my thinks the game will last me a lot longer if I start small or I will at least enjoy the better ships and appreciate them a lot more.

I agree with you.....for me, I belong to a Criminal Organisation (pirates etc.) so I wanted to start off with 2 single pilot ships that would allow me to be involved in the types of things my Organisation will be doing, so I got myself the Cutlass (for trading/exploring) and the Hornet Ghost (Stealth Dogfighter).

From there I can build up my wealth and look towards getting bigger ships over time...plus you need freinds etc to fly the bigger ships, which is something I will have to build up when the game comes out.

I think with this much anticipation, there is ging to be a lot of negativity at the start no matter how good it is - and by the start i mean the dogfighting module. I just hope CR can weather it and stay true to his vision.

Im going to get a Xian or a Ghost. Its a bit further along that the 300i I have currently but im going to call it an inheritance from my Grandfather and his Xian wifelet.

Well, all feedback will be biassed. But the overall picture will give a reasonable idea of what things people want, since the backers are generally Space-Sim fans to begin with.
Most backers will probably have spent a few hundred dollars, far less than they spent (or will spend) on getting a gaming rig that can handle the game.

Certain ships will not be available, such as massive Capital ships requiring 200 PC crew members, but there isn't really an 'end game' ship. No one ship is 'better' than another... just some will be more suited to what you want to do than others - A Bengal Carrier will be mostly useless if you're into racing, for example - and there's a LOT of different things you can do!

Pledgers will start the finished game with one or some ships, but that will matter less than you might think. It's mostly about the Alpha and Beta for now.
You can buy stuff for cash, yes, but nothing that cannot be bought with the same in-game credits you earn.

What would you upgrade from a 300i to?
What do you want from your game?
Chances are, if you're a Dogfighter then a Hornet would do you nicely, but you then find you can't hit me in my tiny, nippy little Aurora... or that a Hornet is far too insane for your skillset and you prefer a big ship with loads of turrets that make mincemeat out of a whole Hornet squadron!

Part of the mad purchase rush (aside from general iPhone syndrome) is the LTI, which people have probably made out to be far more significant than it will be.

I might get a couple of cheaper GPUs rather than rush out to buy four R9 290Xes (not that I could even install them all on my mobo), as I can wait and see what the other users think of the latter first.
Same with this - If you have any doubts, wait a bit, learn more about how the game will work and decide later! ;)

Oh yeah!
There's already a massive argument over whether or not combat will be 1st or 3rd person perspective.
But that's what these modules are meant for - Finding out what is best liked, most hated and what needs tweaking in which direction.

You may like it, you may hate it, but if you don't at least put your say in, what right would you have to complain thereafter? ;)

CR has said we'll be unlikely to hit anything in 3rd as we'll have no HUD or instruments. He's clearly a 1st person cockpit fan!
I'm used to 3rd, myself, having played the likes of Freelancer and Star Conflict - I prefer the increased all-round visibility.

However, given how everything seems to be about choice in this game, all they'd have to do (he says, hoping it's that easy) would be to implement the option of perspective and a disable-able HUD overlay for 3rd, pretty much like Freelancer did.
That gives players the choice and would likely please the largest number of folks.

Had alook at the hanger mod, pretty cool the scale of things are. Getting in the Constellation is brilliant as you can sit in the chair once inside the ship and interact with the ship even the toilet! The scale of the hanger feels big and vast. Hope this game delivers!

Oh God third person? Im really in the first person camp, mostly because of the immersion aspect! You will find arguments like this all over the place (mechwarrior jumping straight to mind) where the immersion camp (me!) feel that theres an unfair advantage to third person in the wider field of view forcing everybody to play that way! Might have to jump onto the forums!

Hopefully theres some middle ground - I suppose they could make the cockpit transparent and call it new tech or something? Maybe different servers for different views? Seems a lot of options out there.

I tend to mix and match, traditional sword and bow MMOs are rarely worth playing first person and you are definitely at a disadvantage over 3rd person players so I always play 3rd person. Most other games it's FPS especially flight/space games.

New badboy in my hanger :D

That's a rather nice ship :) I don't intend to purchase any more ships as I have 3 already but I will be seeking out a super hornet in game :-)

Indeed....its great to be a part of it and really do think this will turn the MMO market on its head with some of the features they have planned.

Instead of the wow cloning machine we currently have.

hardly mmo when they said something like 100 player limit instances around earth we can assume its the same everywhere
Moderately multiplayer online game maybe

massively multiplayer is

this is likely to be about as mmo as freelancer but then again some people think world of tanks is an mmo because it won a golden lolstick mmo award which makes quake ,cs , cod pretty much mmos if you go by that

Is Star Citizen an MMO?
No! Star Citizen will take the best of all possible worlds, ranging from a permanent, persistent world similar to those found in MMOs to an offline, single player campaign like those found in the Wing Commander series. The game will include the option for private servers, like Freelancer, and will offer plenty of opportunities for players who are interested in modding the content. Unlike many games, none of these aspects is an afterthought: they all combine to form the core of the Star Citizen experience.

Well there is 1 huge persistent universe, where the actions of everyone playing the game will affect one another.

You are referring to the instance system of pvp battles which is a small part of the overall game ......and yes that isn't particularly "mmo".....but then that's like saying WoW isn't an MMO as you can only RAID with 25 Players or a battleground can only hold a set number of players.

There has to be a limit, purely from a technological stand point for this game as CR has mentioned.

They haven't given out the details on how that instanced system will work.....but the overall game is still a MMO, where you have huge amount of players all playing in the same universe.

Plus I don't think 3000 players fighting in a twitch based combat game would be very fun.
