There was supposed to be an event last year (for the N4 and N10 releases), however it was cancelled at very short notice due to a hurricane.

Yes I know - I prefer it to be an event but with no invites given out yet it make me wonder.

Yeah if the rumoured release dates are true then it's going to be a very short notice event if they do hold one!

... Or we could all be wrong, and we're still a month away from release, and they'll send out invites with plenty of time to spare.

It's to do with the android version since the nexus 4 shipped with 4.2, the same pattern can be seen on the new nexus 7 which has 4.3.

Well they didn't with the Nexus 4 and doubt they would with the Nexus 5 due to the low profit margins compared to most phones.
