Underwhelemd by the 'next' generation of consoles and games?

I'm underwhelmed not so much with the graphics. There not as good as I thought they would be but thats fine. PC will be the lead platform from now on it looks like.

Most of innovations seem to be about connectedness. Everything has to be connected, all multiplayer, online everything in some way. Not about making great gameplay experiences in more interactive worlds. I expect the next Skyrim to be like an MMO.

I'm posting in this epic thread and giving 5 stars. Has been entertaining lol :D

Food for thought though.... What do you consider "next gen" ?? I mean I see next gen as Next Generation which to me means next in line of succession basically. So after the PS4 and XO has been out there will be another next gen... and another one after that.

Sure graphics will improve but at what point does that become null and void ? when you have a robot that actually shoots you in the face and you fall to the floor only to get resurrected at another spawning pool ? Sure hardware is always going to play into these things but game play and entertainment value is where its at.

Heck if Nintendo announced they were going to re-release the SNES with a 1080 output and all the games ever released on SNES would be re-released over the year but with a higher resolution (but game play completely untouched) I would buy it without question, in fact I would throw my bank account at Nintendo. The games on the SNES (ok ok and Mega Drive) were amazing and although graphically they are well not that good compared to the CGI type graphics produced now. The games gripped me and I had fun playing them. The amount of hours I sunk into Mario Kart on the SNES is .... well not worth thinking about because it was a lot ! and most of that was playing with friends or family. Believe it on not once upon a time you had to sit side by side and play on the same 20" TV

Anyways.... BRING BACK THE SNES !!!! (and mega drive)

And yet another thread descends into the "PS4 is more powerful than Xbox One" discussion :(

It shouldn't need a discussion, the PS4 is more powerful than the XB1 and no amount of software will make it catch up. Most importantly though is
a) will we really notice or care if one game looks/runs better on one console, never stopped many enjoying PS3 multiplats last gen.
b) you get the console you want with the games you want, shouldn't worry about the other console if you don't own it, if it bothers you that much just get them both.

As for the OP, look at the early PS3/360 games and compare them with what is out now. Look at the difference between Halo 3 and 4 and Uncharted 1 and 3, massive improvements and they are not launch games compared with recent ones.

It's sad knowing they've basically locked gaming up at almost the same level for another seven years, it's really not much better than the previous gen, you'd think consoles would finally have at least solid 1080p 60fps gaming with bf3 ultra level graphics, that would at least push things forward on pc a bit, im not sure if we'll see real time raytracing in our lifetime at this rate. :(

I'd wager it's a safe bet that it simply wont be and a lot of games wont even make it to pc or be delayed because of easier pc piracy.

There is no reason to believe they wont be taking the same stance as last gen when it comes to pc versions they know millions will simply download the torrent rather than pay so they will delay the pc version.

For me the best games will come from the big players again the santa monicas the naughty dogs platinum games etc and those games just wont be on pc.
Are forza 5 last of us 2 dead rising 3 gran turismo on pc ?

Nope they haven't, there's a big difference between these new consoles and the old ones.

You are too concerned with the specific resolution. Raytracing isn't needed for photo-realism either.

People need to get off the "consoles hold PCs back" bandwagon.

Piracy is just an excuse developers or publishers use when they can't be bothered to do a PC build of a game.

PC piracy is not necessarily much easier than console at all, and for some reason a lot of people and developers just pretend that there's no such thing as console piracy.

There is no reason to believe they wont be taking the same stance as last gen when it comes to pc versions they know millions will simply download the torrent rather than pay so they will delay the pc version.

They need to learn to ignore piracy instead of whinging about it. The better developers know this already anyway. A lot of developers need to look to CDPoject and independents like Oddworld Inhabitants for cues on how to conduct themselves.

It also depends on who you mean when you say "they", with the big surge of "independent" developers who seem to be having a rather large big influence on the direction games are moving in, I can see the sort of developers who pretend no one ever buys PC games ever are going to be less relevant than they already are.

These are the games you buy consoles for when you're in to PC games because they're mostly first party titles.

It's a pretty valid concern this generation, considering that console hardware has typically been comparable to high end gaming PCs. This time it's comparable to mid-level PCs.

But hopefully the fact that this generation don't have overly complex bespoke architectures will release resources that can concentrate on bringing great experiences to all platforms. I'm certainly enjoying BF4 on PC and don't feel it's been held back, considering it's on current and next gen too. It can be done.

I wouldn't say that they have been comparable to high end gaming PCs at all. On a single GPU level, maybe, but multi GPU has been around for a long time, the 7950GX2 I think it was called, was out quite a while before the Xbox 360 and PS3 for example, and that's just looking at the GPU and ignoring the other things like memory amount, memory bandwidth and so on.

With game engines being highly scalable too, there isn't an actual reason why *consoles* would hold anything back, or have been holding things back. Any compromises have been down to the developers really, where they, for want of a better word "consolifiy" a game, or rather make a really lazy PC build whilst ignoring the extended capability of the PCs.

I don't think consoles have been comparable in hardware terms with a gaming PC for a while tbh, but I never think of consoles as competing hardware wise, consoles are all about connivence and offer (IMHO) good value for money over several years, due to the lack of hardware updates, games are guaranteed to run.

I'm a PC gamer at heart, but being able to come in, turn the console on via the controller and play Grand Theft Auto V while sat in my pyjama bottoms in my bean bag is convenient and easy.

I totally don't buy that consoles hold PC's back, developers do, lazy developers or uninspiring developers or developers under the thumb of a big corporation do :).
