In terms of hardware design (not power) why is XBO so poorly put together?

Well that could explain why they went for lower powered hardware, but it still doesn't make sense, as far as I know it isn't simply a case of taking a design and manufacturing it on a larger node, plus the die sizes would be what, twice the size, thus twice the cost too? So more expensive and larger, generating more heat for less performance? I'm having a hard time believing it.

Same here to be honest, there's conflicting reports right now, until people tear them down and inspect it's all conjecture.

I am the only one who doesn't really care what the innards of either console look like? As long as they are stable and don't overheat, it could look like a baboon's arse and I wouldn't care.

We're on a hardware enthusiast form, would you really expect anything less than most be interested in that?

Sure, I don't *care*, but I am definitely interested.

To the average Joe on the street, no. but this is a hardware enthusiast forum, the ps4 from the tear down videos shown today the ps4 is a very well engineered and elegant looking bit of kit.

Alienware laptops get stick for being expensive but I've stripped my alienware down to the bare chassis and its cooling and engineering is simply amazingly good compared to its competition.

The xbone from early reports comparable to the ps4 isn't as good, but will see soon as more tear down reports and videos turn up.

The ps4 has been engineered by Sony and they know hardware and engineered and designed some of the best games consoles ever, they know a thing or two.

MS arent hardware engineers at heart. they should've excelled in the os but appears they have even messed this up a little, however the Kinect is a marvel of engineering tbh..

I think this man deserves an apology?

All the abuse and sly digs he took and yet he is the first person in this thread to back up his claims with actual links... rather than 'I know more than you as I did maths at school rar rar rar rar'

I think I'm wrong to be honest these articles say they are both using 28nm

Regardless it's still a bit of a hotch potch design when compared with the ps4 which has no power brick is smaller, cheaper and more powerful.

Yeah, I guess. I guess I just look at PCs and consoles differently. All I want from my console is something that runs nicely, is stable, and plays the games I want. How the innards actually look aren't a concern for me (unless it's badly designed and will cause the console to fail).

From a purely aesthetic point of view I think both new consoles look quite nice. Sure the Xbox One is big, but I don't really mind that much. As long as it fits under my TV unit I'm happy enough. I'm just glad both consoles are black, it looks bad enough having a white Wii under my TV when everything else is black!

No power brick inside = less heat inside
Bigger = larger fans =run slower and get same airflow = quiter

Looks a win win to me although the ps4 is a lot smaller. However doesn't make much difference to me, my wiis small and it doesn't make difference to me. I'd rather a case larger and quieter fans.

I would expect that the 40nm thing is not correct, as it just makes no sense and would inflate costs quite a bit for worse performance. Where ever the 40nm was sourced from was likely just a load of nonsense.

It depends on the person really. I like tinkering with my stuff, I like tinkering with my PS3, and I've had it apart and played with custom firmware and the like in the very early stages for the novelty of it (when you had to load an iPhone with a custom linux bootloader that enabled you to boot a modified install of Linux to inject the code in to the PS3, "FUN!")

I prefer the way the PS4 looks to the Xbox One in terms of out and out aesthetics, though I think the Xbox One design is more suitable as it fits in with the type of stuff it will be around more so, like on top of an AV Receiver, for example.

What I don't like about the PS4 is the slanted/skewed design, I'd much prefer it if it wasn't slanted as it is and a bit wider to fit in with AV type stuff, it's a huge improvement over the original PS3 though, as some one else said, dat George Foreman grill thing was just bad.

I want a Wii U at some point, though I'll get a black one when it comes to it unless I find a seriously good offer on a white one.

Nobody in their right mind would put one on top of an av receiver, surely lol.

Not all kit is square and boxy anyway. dvd/bluray players, tivo/sky boxes, other consoles etc etc.

I was like that about 15 years ago, but I think as I got older I moved away from it somewhat. I still love getting inside tech now and then, but as I do it for a living I don't bother at home as much as I used to. That probably affects my viewpoint a bit :)

I dunno, I have an AV receiver (though soon to be replaced) and a HTPC that are in the same format, I just prefer that format. As for placing on an AV receiver, it depends on where the ventilation holes are on each item, and whether your receiver is an Onkyo or not. :p

Is that a vague way of admitting you're becoming an old codger? :D

'Playstation 4 dis' = This is the Playstation 4

hmmm, didn't know I could understand japanese! (if thats what it is lol)
