Woo, got the go ahead from the mrs for the London triathlon! Now to find a swimmer and see if work will pay for my travel and accommodation costs...

I'd suggest you go out with the quick group from your local club to get quicker and the beginners group to prepare you for some of the worst bike handling skills in Christendom.

Haha, I loled.

I think I mentioned the other day that one of my friends did the Manchester 52 this year just gone and nearly came a cropper several times on account of numpties doing idiotic things in front of him.

I'm staying up in Loweswater next week and as I've plenty of space in the car I'll have 3 bikes with me (mtb. cross & road). I'm happy enough with my knowledge of good mtb routes nearby and I was planning a figure of 8 loop covering Whinlatter, Newlands and Honister passes but are there any good routes with fairly smooth off road paths (footpaths are fine mid week in November) linked by roads to use my cross bike on?

Kind of concerns me. I'm signing up for the Manc 52 mile I think. That said, I do get a lot of experience dealing with terrible riders and psychotic bus drivers heading along Wilmslow Road.

Winnats pass is evil, pure evil. Steep, narrow and very busy on a weekend. I don't have the urge to cycle up it again and I don't think I ever will :D

Maybe the lightweight and younger whippets amongst you will enjoy it, but for me it was just nasty :p
Sounds perfect :p!

I'll do it if they're paying costs!

Not that I'm aware of for those three passes there are some great routes though from lowes up and over whin to Braithwaite across to newlands and then Buttermere, Honister mind if u havent been up hon before from the Buttermere side its a real killer! from there u can either go into Keswick and then round the back of bassenthwaite lake to say Embleton then cut backacross to lowes or if u are going hardcore descend hon then across to cat bells then up Whinlatter the.side u descended earlier and back to Loweswater. The second option is basicall. The team townend Route and should see u doing 45 to 50 miles the first around 60-70 wish my arm was Ok as I'd Offer to accompany u round!

Gear and bike packed!

Ordered a winter hat to wear under my helmet and a track pump, should be good to ride early to mid next week I hope!

Fingers crossed the UK weather is kind to me and no rain!

Very ambitious! I've planned my longest ever ride tomorrow and the weather looks abysmal. There's a slight tailwind all the way though and as long as I make the first 50 miles, I'll effectively have a support car to pick me up when I fail as the missus will be doing the journey a few hours later.

Any hints of how to not lose the will to live when riding in the rain?! :p

Oh.....this is driving me up the wall. Just managed to get rid of a chest infection which floored me for about 4 weeks then took the little fella to the doctors for his flu vaccination on Tuesday. All good but I must have caught something in the waiting room from the masses of 'great unwashed' who were sat in there as I've woke up this morning with a horrible case of manflu. Feeling lousy and that's over a month I've not been in the saddle of either the road bike or mtb.

Absolutely hacked off. Tried to just 'man up' and commute my usual route yesterday but I was literally dying at the other end, not pleasant and in hindsight, a bit stupid to try it.

You got your penis a flu vaccination? Why?! No wonder you're feeling rough.

You'll find you're a good few mph quicker on the closed course. When I did it I could average 20mph on similar length rides. When I came to do the event I averaged over 23mph.
I'm hoping I should be able to hold that sort of speed because the speed traps on my commute tell me I'm going through them at 24mph, 28mph if the wind is behind or if I'm pushing on and 22mph if the wind is towards me. It's a flat route so should be similar to how I ride my 10 mile commute except without the 15 sets of lights and traffic to slow me down and wear out my legs. I'm hoping there aren't any restrictions on the bike I can use - I'd prefer to use my commuter because I'm comfortable on it. No point taking gears if I don't need them :D

Lookup your local clubs TT courses and go balls out. 10M TT? Go twice etc
Not be a bad idea closer to the time :)
