Silence at work - rememberance

The silence isn't just you personally remembering/thinking, it's also about the fact that it is done as a united act across the nation. Without the effort and sacrifices of those people, things could well be very different.

Hundreds of thousands British died to protect our nation and way of living. We show our respect to the sacrifice they made with such a simple gesture of one whole minute of silence each year as a nation. Yet I'm surprised at how so many people find it difficult, or just decided not to do it. Some things you should just do, this is one of them.

My late grandfather fought in both world wars and he died last year so for me Remembrance Day will be remembering him, the sacrifices he and countless others made to ensure we remain free.

I think many people have similar stories and it's very much a personal thing.

Stoner81.

Wow your Grandfather must have had good innings! Must have been 110+?

I'll be observing the minutes silence in particular thinking about my great uncle who was shot down in north Africa and remembering my Grandad who survived having his ship sunk beneath him by the Japanese.

What a horrific thread.

No matter how you choose to behave all year round in terms of honouring the dead, what you believe in or anything else you feel about the concept of war as an individual surely a collective moment of reflection for the ordinary people just like ourselves who died isnt too much to ask for?

Does even this have to become a **** take?

Broadway called, it wants its diva back.

"LOL"

Its not diva-ish to recognise that at end of the day guys died who were no different to us other than the fact that they had the misfortune to be born in a different era. Is it really such a huge leap not to take the **** out of them?

It's divaish to moan and claim that because someone isn't doing something the way that you'd do it, that it's disgusting.

The OP was suggesting that it was wrong or at least questionable to have a minutes silence as opposed to having some sort of life ethic.

To oppose a simple silence where there can be a collective remembrance seems far more diva-ish than anything ive said.

Why does it have to be belittled?

I understand the genuine reasons behind the objections to the poppy but thats a whole new argument.

While we give 60 seconds, the govt give this country away to the very people we fought against - the europeans & all the immigrants it lets in everyday.

All those poor souls that perished just to let out spineless govt give it all away....so sad

At the time, plenty of immigrants and Europeans fought on the side of Britain, but don't let that get in the way of your ignorance and dislike of the non-British.

And you win a thousand internet points for utterly trivial non-reply. How about looking up what successor actually means, ;).

I'll be honest, I was debating the use of the word given the context, but thought screw it, I've typed it, and I'll commit.

Ya win some, ya lose some, back to chewing bubblegum..however, my sentiment doesn't change! :(

I disagree, in recent years the legion, help for heroes etc. continue to push this nauseating soldier worship, it seems like we are expected to worship and feel sorry for people who all made a career choice to put themselves in this position. it's a million miles away from conscription due to a real threat, IMO there hasn't been a real threat to this country since WW2

Falklands?

We wouldn't be here if it weren't for those brave Men and Women.

I always keep to the silence. However it does offend me when other do not!

I'm absolutely serious. Your reply is pathetic. You've said nothing. All you've done is exclaimed some sort of faux disgust, no doubt to go hand in hand along with the faux respect you claim to have for these ridiculous institutions that also pretend to give a crap about this stuff for 60 seconds a year, then blatantly carry on with the war business as usual.

Someone who actually makes some sense.

I will never understand why this 60 second nonsense is such a big deal. People I know who actually give a **** about remembrance do a whole lot more than what the masses consider to be a respectful amount of time. The whole idea that people need to be urged into remembering the events & people that have on a specific date is laughable.

But hey if that 60 seconds means you can belittle people over the internet with your moral superiority then go for it.
