290/X or 7990

I am building an ITX system, so went with 7990 to get as much oompf into a single card as possible but if I had gone mATX or ATX, I would have picked up a 290X, with the free ability to go cross fire. I can't remember where I saw it, but very diminishing returns when tri-firing and more.

Well I'm in the same boat - I'm trying to decide between a 7990 or a 290 pro (or maybe 2 :D). However, I am more sensibly moving from a 6990 ;) Looking at the benchmarks the 7990 should just about double my frame rates which is my rule of thumb for upgrading.

So why the hesitation ? I run triple screens at 5760x1080 eyefinity and crossfire (via 6990). It has not been smooth sailing at triple screen resolution - I still suffer micro stutter on quite a few games. As we know frame pacing is now implemented up to 2560x1440 but not yet higher or for eyefinity. I am tempted by the built in frame pacing at higher resolutions on the 290 pro but it is soundly beaten by the 7990 in terms of raw framerates. AMD are promising the frame pacing drivers at higher resolutions but I have a nagging doubt that they will abandon that on 7xxx series and below and say those that need crossfire and triple screen should be getting 290 series where it is built in. Awaiting a crossfire eyefinity test with 290's - anybody seen any reviews ?

At your resolution the frame pacing issue is supposedly addressed as you have no doubt experienced but it simply will not be a noticeable frame rate improvement for you - unless you try tri-fire with 7990 and one 7950 that should give a nice boost.

I may wait and if frame pacing driver is released for eyefinity resolution I will try to pick up a 7990 then .... if there are any left.

AMD will definitely deliver frame pacing drivers for eyefinity so no need to worry about that. The problem is already fixed for 290 users as it uses a combination of hardware and software frame pacing. The release is due soon for 7xxx eyefinity frame pacing. They fixed single screen superbly so i have no doubts it will happen.

Thanks for all the feedback. Blown away by the amount of responses. I have made my decision, although its not final and i may change my mind and DSR and go with the other option if im not happy. I will announce what i picked via a picture tomorrow. :p

Already dropped a hint elsewhere. ;)

On an unrelated note, how am I supposed to shift my TF3 Boost with your IceQs on the MM Matt? :p

Lol. I've not had much luck yet either mate which is surprising giving the Ice-Q's legendary rep.

Is no one going to press a claim for a 7990? Come on 7990 users make a claim for your card. I've been looking at reviews and at 1440p it trumps every card out there, including a 690 which is also a great card.

You know what I would say 7990 fastest single card for a little over £400

Then you could get two if you wanted and have 2 single fastest cards.

Think about it.

7990 for £450...
