iPad Mini Retina - Now available!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow... Getting an iPad mini is turning out to be a bit of a nightmare...

Ordered from the Indian dish place on Tuesday for home delivery next week. Tried to cancel order today so I can re-order online for collection in store tomorrow. 1st payment declined by the bank, called up bank to remove block on my card and had to make the transaction again. 2nd time payment failed and turns out it's a problem with the retailer site.

Payment for my home delivery order had already been taken from my account, so I called back up to un-cancel my order because I can't be bothered to go through all the hassle anymore just to get it a few days earlier.

ARGH!!!!!

Why not just order it direct from Apple and have it delivered to home or workplace? Seems less hassle.

I didn't think it would bother me, but I'm finding going from the 5s with touch ID to the mini really jarring :(

This talk about the colour production on screen is making me want to leave the mini for now until its sorted...

Personally, if I were in the market for a Mini, I'd do exactly that as I suspect this issue could become bigger, especially when the reviews start appearing, and Apple may be forced into making improvements.

In all honesty I'm only making a big fuss of it because Apple haven't seen fit to mention that the colour accuracy of this retina mini is worse than the iPad air.

They're essentially making out both iPads are the same, but already we know that the CPU is clocked 100mhz faster on the air and the colour gamut is wider.

Agree completely. It's very underhand of Apple to effectively "hide" this not insignificant detail and paint the Mini as simply a smaller Air, identical in every other way.

There are a lot of people who've been deliberating between the Air and the retina Mini lately. Frankly, unless you absolutely *need* the smaller size of the Mini for some reason, I'd get an Air at this point.

Just had a play with them both side-by-side in the West Quay store.

I definitely think the form factor of the mini retina is nicer — the Air does feel big in the hand.

However, I did think the type size within Safari and iBooks a bit small on the mini.

I would definitely be more inclined to carry the mini around with me day-to-day but I worry that I would miss the bigger screen size of the Air.

I know it's a bit silly but something in between the two would be ideal. :p

why buy an iPad mini? I want to buy one but not sure if i actually use it. Im into my photography.

Buy a card reader and you have small (relatively), cheap device you can copy images onto to view and QC them. I take mine with me when I'm away for a few days/weeks and don't have space for a laptop. It's a good way of checking exposure/focus etc and making sure the shots you got are correct. You can also do a quick bit of editing and send a few photos off by email. It's not perfect* but it's very good for the job due to the 4x3 screen over 16x9 android screens.

*One of the biggest hassles is the inability to delete all imported photos at once, tapping thousands of images is a massive pain when you want to delete them, but thats a problem with iOS. I shoot RAW with small Jpeg set the camera to save RAW to one card and Jpeg to the other then copy the jpeg card over so I always have at least one backup of my photos, even if they are only jpeg.

Out of interest, how would you propose that Apple advertise the difference in the screens so that it's clear what the difference is to consumers?

Mine's left Dubai now.
It's interesting that the iPads are taking a different route to the MacBooks.

My MacBook went:
China
Korea
Kazakhstan
Poland
UK

Not a clue but that's not my problem, it's for marketeers to think about and apply the right 'spin' to. Just because I can't think of a good way of differentiating them in advertising and publicity materials doesn't mean Apple shouldn't though.

It's a "lie of omission". By neglecting to say anything at all about the screens, they're effectively saying they're the same, which is far from the truth. They've made a point of expounding on the vibrancy and accurancy of the retina screens in the full size iPads thus far, yet they neglect to mention that the Mini's retina screen won't look as good as all the larger retina screens that have come before. That's what's underhand.

I'm looking at the details of the iPad mini with retina on the Apple website and it says

"Photos and videos look incredibly detailed and text is razor sharp on the stunning Retina display, which features over 3.1 million pixels - a million more than an HDTV"

The iPad Air description reads the same. There's no mention of colour gamut or vibrancy on either product.

But they did talk about wider colour gamuts in both the iPad 3/4 and iPhone 5 keynotes. So they know all to well that when people hear the screen described as "retina, same as the air", people imagine they mean in all ways. But it's clearly inferior in gamut and brightness.

I suppose if you're naive you might expect that. We really should be encouraging consumers to research and investigate these things themselves instead of expecting to be spoon fed.

How on earth is misleading advertising, me being naive?

How would anyone know that the colour gamut is any different in the retina mini when there are none on display and the specifications are not listed anywhere.

Even initial previews from respected websites did not mention the inferior display.

If you ask any staff in an apple store, they'll just say, "it's a retina display, same as the air". No mention of it being any different. Same with the CPU speed being different yet Apple not disclosing the frequencies.

Where's the misleading advertising?

You don't think intentionally not disclosing the fact that the specifications differ is misleading?

The advert on the apple site is a joke:

"Feature for feature, it’s identical to iPad Air in every way. Except for its super-portable, hold-it-in-one-hand, still-just-right mini size"

No, it isn't identical if the screen has the colour reproduction of last years mini.
